Padres Offseason In Review Chat

I don't think Tatis at shortstop is on the table in the short term. They already toyed with the idea of moving him to the outfield for health reasons a few years ago.
11:29
With the multiple surgeries last year, they'll probably keep him on the grass until he shows he can stay healthy for an extended stretch.

Do the padres seem to be set with their lineup, or has Nola's nose injury opened the path to potentially acquiring more catching?
Darragh McDonald
11:31
It would be difficult to get more catching right now. There's not much available beyond minor league depth guys. I assume they'll go with Campusano and Severino until Nola is back.

11:31
How much playing time do you think the Padres will give Matt Carpenter?
Darragh McDonald
11:31
I assume he'll get a decent amount up front, with Tatis still having 20 games on his suspension. The Soto injury seems minor but could keep Carpenter in there.
11:32
Once Tatis is back, it will depend is Carp still has that magic touch from last year.

If Soto his .230 something again and has multiple IL stints, do teams start to think twice about throwing half a billion at him?
Darragh McDonald
11:33
He won't though. He had a .249 BABIP last year, way below his career rate. Batted ball data doesn't support the drop.
He was unlucky last year and still posted a 145 wRC+.

11:34
So you really think Manny leaves $50m and an opt-out on the table if not for Hosmer?
Darragh McDonald
11:34
I don't know about the specifics. I'm just saying that money sometimes isn't enough. Soto turned down, like, 440 million from the Nats, I think? Because the team was both bad and for sale. He didn't want to take a huge payday just to be in a situation he didn't like.
11:35
So, if two teams have fairly comparable offers, maybe the overall situation can play a role.

When you whip out a long list of players like you did earlier do you have cheat notes or is that all swimming around in your brain?  Very impressive either way!  That said, do you dream about baseball?  Thanks!
Darragh McDonald
11:36
It's a combo. From doing this job, I have a sense of which teams are likely to be competitive and which aren't, and which players are on short-term deals and which aren't.
11:37
I'll check FanGraphs about something I don't feel sure about.

With all the writers posting about Hader and Soto, looking at extensions, would you say that Hader is more likely?
Darragh McDonald
11:37
Hader is more likely in that he will cost less. He's probably looking at something vaguely similar to Edwin Diaz, so, 100 million.
11:38
Soto's contract will be nuts, partly because he's good but also because he debuted so young. He's still only 24. He'll hit free agency at 26.
11:39
We've recently seen teams pushing deals to crazy lengths for luxury tax reasons, signing guys into their early 40s. So, does someone give Soto, like, 15 years or something nutty like that?
Honestly can't rule it out.

were you assigned the Padre chat because you especially follow them? Or are you this well-versed in all the teams?
Darragh McDonald
11:39
It's based on who wrote the Offseason In Review post.
11:40
And we're trying to have the same teams that we covered in the Offseason Outlook series back in the fall. Though there have been a few swaps for scheduling reasons.
11:41
But to answer your question, all us writers can write about all 30 clubs.

11:43
what do you think might be the biggest challenge this season for the padres
Darragh McDonald
11:43
I could see the starting pitching being an issue, especially they get a couple significant injuries to Musgrove, Darvish or Snell.
11:44
If Michael Wacha is your #2, that's an issue.

man, i’ve been waiting for this chat for weeks, and this is miserable. super early, boo! lots of stuff about Darragh, and not enough about preller and late spring training trades🤨

11:45
Sorry for any questions I'm not getting to. There's over 100 people in there and the queue has been open since yesterday, so there's a lot in here.

Will I ever play 1B down the road? Will I get the Miguel Cabrera treatment... transition to 1B then DH full-time as I get older? LFGSD!
Darragh McDonald
11:46
I guess this will have to happen at some point, sure. He and Bogaerts are both signed into their early 40s. Could be a challenge down the road but the club doesn't seem concerned by that right now.
Flags fly forever and so on.
Bogaerts
11:47
Do you think they move him to 2nd or 1st in the next few years?
Darragh McDonald
11:47
It will depend on how he ages defensively, but he can't play shortstop until he's 41. So, it will have to be a conversation eventually.

Should the Padres trade Soto to recoup some prospect value next offseason? Will they?
