I doubt it.
Something would have to go really wrong.
They're in win-now mode and will hold excellent players like Soto.

I know many longtime Padres fans have been wondering where the newfound money to sign so many talented players has come from, especially since the term “Fire Sale” was first associated with our hometown team. However, in addition to Seidler’s financial commitment, hasn’t the team also smartly marketed across the border? This never seems to be mentioned.
Darragh McDonald
11:50
The marketing thing is outside my wheelhouse, especially since I'm way up here in Canada.
11:51
But I've seen some other people point out that, although San Diego is a smaller market, the Padres essentially have it to themselves.
11:52
There's no NFL team, NBA team or NHL team, not even an MLS team.
11:53
I think part of Seidler's logic is that spending a lot of money to put a good team together means he gets basically the entire city into it.
I don't know if he makes his money back on that, but I can see how it's different than a team in a midsize city with 2-3 other major sports teams down the block.

Manny can play 3rd deep into his 30s if not his 40s -- he's an extremely underrated defender seldom mentioned in proximity to Arenado, which he should be.
Darragh McDonald
11:56
You're right to say Machado is a good defender. I don't disagree there, but who are some third basemen playing the position past their mid-30s? Josh Donaldson? Evan Longoria?
RSN
11:56
Will the whole RSN bankruptcy another excuse owners will use for not spending in the next offseason? I assume teams like the Padres are going to get less TV revenue this year than expected or is that assumption wrong?
Darragh McDonald
11:57
I think they will lose money in the short term, yeah, as far as I can tell. But the long-term will depend on the new streaming paradigm.
If MLB sets it up so anyone can pay 20 or 30 bucks to just stream the whole season, how much money does that make? With no middle man?
Kim and Merrill
11:58
Article floating around we should trade for Ohtani now. Would Merrill and Kim get it done? Separate question, what would a Kim extension look like?
Darragh McDonald
11:58
I don't think Ohtani is available now.
Manny
11:58
Beltre did it.  Manny isn't moving off 3rd. Imo

11:59
I would love to see it!

It is my understanding that Kevin Plawecki was signed by Pittsburg Pirates to a minor league contract with the option to be brought up. He has an option to opt out. He is a decent defensive catcher and average hitter. Any chance he would be considered while Nola is out?
Darragh McDonald

There's a bunch of veterans on minor league deals who could plausibly be available, sure.
Darvish ST
12:01
Yu is a creature of precision routine every spring, but hasn't gotten consistent innings at WBC to build up to early April. Is this a concern?
Darragh McDonald
12:01
I suppose there could be some rust for a bit, but the season is long. I'm sure he'll get into a groove at some point.

We've seen no padres trades this offseason, how about a crazy 3 team scenario: Hader to NYM, Grisham to PIT, Mets prospects to PIT, Bryan Reynolds to SD Padres
Darragh McDonald
12:03
It would obviously depend on which prospects are involved but I love the ambitious framework.

Is Alfaro available? LFGSD!
Darragh McDonald
12:04
Alfaro is with Boston on a minor league deal. He probably makes the team because Connor Wong is hurt. Or he was a few weeks ago, not sure on the latest with him.

A billionaire owner putting his own money into the team!  What a concept!  Didn't it work for Steinbrenner?
Darragh McDonald
12:05
Based on these poll results, I think the fans are exciting, and rightly so.
I also think a lot of non-Padre fans will be rooting for them, just because it will send a message that it's good to have an owner that doesn't pinch every penny. Count me as one in that group.
12:06
But I have to wrap it up and get back to the main site, unfortunately. Sorry for the early start time and for all the questions I couldn't get to.
12:07
We still have a bunch more of these team chats coming up. And there's also even more chats available to Front Office subscribers, in addition to other benefits, which you can check out here...

Spring Training this year has given young players a chance to show their skills, but IMO the WBC is generating Baseball excitement for this upcoming season. Your thoughts?

What part of Canada? I love Mississauga and Halifax is my favorite Canadian city.
Darragh McDonald

Love the WBC and I hope it grows.

I live in Toronto but I was born in Halifax. I have no family there, however. My Irish immigrant parents just lived there for a bit before coming to Ontario.
Have a good one!
