Both with a beer in our hands, no doubt

Paul, would MT be more willing to relinquish calling the defense if Ken Norton, Jr. was hired to replace Coach Butler?
Zeise
12:28
I don’t know about him specifically - but that’s the direction Tomlin should go
A new coordinator who is experienced that he lets run the defense
Bob
12:28
Is Kenny Pickett a franchise quarterback in the NFL
Zeise
12:29
Boy I don’t know. He certainly has a lot of great qualities and he had a huge senior season. He is gonna be drafted as one but it will be interesting to see where his career takes him. I wouldn’t bet against him that’s for surw

Paul, will my training as a barrister allow me to keep a straight face when I preach to the sullen, yinzer masses that this team's number one off-season goal will be to improve the run game?
Zeise
12:34
That will be the point of the conversation won’t it? I will say this - if you look at the moves they made in the offseason they did try and do their best to upgrade the run game. They just evaluated linemen horribly

Hi Paul: Worst decision — (a) hiring an unemployed Matt Canada as QB coach; (b) promoting Matt Canada to OC; or (c) retaining Matt Canada as OC? I didn’t include a (d) all of the above, as it’s too easy.
Zeise
12:34
ill go with B

Do you think there is any chance towards the end of the decade that if attendance is poor year after year Bob Nutting would move the Pirates or mlb would allow him to?
Zeise
12:35
Nope, I do not. The Pirates are here to stay and so is Bob Nutting
Donna
12:36
Hi Paul, any idea when Ben will officially announce his retirement?  Thank you.
Zeise
12:36
I would assume maybe in February - take a month to sort of let reality set in and get away from the emotions of the season

Paul, can I eat enough chicken, and perform enough squats, in the next 6-month timeframe to become a legitimate possibility at guard?  Not like banner at RT, I mean a real possibility, defined for the purposes of this meaningless chat as odds better than 38.7. Muchas gracias.
Zeise
12:39
You do have to get a little bigger and stronger but it appears to me the issue you had was snapping and then blocking —- I would say given that, the answer is yes

Gerry D mentioned in a chat that the Steelers organization has to be “willing to pay for quality assistant coaches”. Do the Steelers not want to pay for top assistants, and is this something they have been known for, or is this a relatively new way of doing business?
Zeise
12:40
They traditionally do not pay top dollar for assistants but Tomlin also has said he prefers giving guys on his own staff opportunities to advance

I know that the Jimmys and the Joes have a lot to do with how well a team performs, but can a team expect to be great without talented coaching manning the Xs and Os as well?
Zeise
12:40
No, the Xs and Os are very important as well
Dan
12:41
What do you think of all these "void year" contracts?  Seems like a terrible way of doing business, paying for guys that are long gone.
Zeise
12:41
It is a way to get around the salary cap essentially. The salary cap is necessary and has made the NGL competitive but these built in loop holes give teams a little flexibility

Paul, I realize that Ben took a beating throughout his career, unlike someone I know, but did he really do all he could to keep himself in shape? Like actually jog and or sprint once in awhile? I've seen octagenarians with better lateral quickness.
Zeise
12:44
There are many who have reported that Ben was never a model of fitness. I don’t know if that’s true or not but it is what a lot of people have reported

12:44
If the Steelers draft a quarterback, do you think Pickett, Strong, Willis or Coral would best fit the Steelers system?  Thanks Paul.
Zeise
12:45
I like Pickett, Howell and Coral all fit well because they are all mobile
Charlie
12:45
Paul, will 2022 be the year that you formally and finally abandon the white tee markers for good; and joyfully embrace your new, permanent home at the gold/senior land markers?
Zeise
12:45
No I’m not old enough. I think I have like 10 more years before I qualify for those, right?
Tommy
12:45
Steelers will have ~$41M free agency, could they sign corner JC Jackson and guard Brandon Scheriff and basically have about $5M left?  Can let Haden leave.  Fix 2 issues for sure, get Jackson entering his prime years.   Draft OT, iLB, DLine.   "Punt" on QB this year, Rudy or Haskins it is.   Wouldnt be opposed to resigning Edmunds and have a strong D backfield.
Zeise
12:46
I’m not sure you want to put $36 million into two players on a team with as many holes as the Steelers

Which Pittsburgh team (Steelers, Pirates, Penguins, Pitt football, and Pitt Hoops) wins the next world/national championship for the city?
Zeise
12:47
Penguins. That organization is run the right way

Hi Paul,  Tomlin supporters like to point to his overall win loss record as positive. Tomlin detractors point to his current playoff record as a negative.   But, if you ignore both and just look at Tomlins performance for this past season (pretend he was a first year coach) how would Tomlin rate?   Granted if true
Zeise
12:48
I would say this - he did a good job of keeping this team together and getting them to nine wins. But you cannot ignore his hand in creating a team with so many warts - starting with his choices for key assistant coaches and stemming to some of the personnel decisions that were a disaster

PZ, really enjoy your articles, chats, and observations (sports and otherwise) which are generally spot on.  If you were the Steelers GM would you consider 'starting from scratch' and jettisoning most, if not all, the higher paid guys for as much draft capital as those moves could bring in 2022 and 2023?
Zeise
12:49
Scratch, no. But I would clean out a lot of dead weight and guys who are making more money than their production merits and that includes on the coaching staff
FlyGuy
12:49
Who’s the most valuable player the Steelers have on offense that is currently under contract?
Zeise
12:50
Najee Harris

‘22 rosters look to be pretty much set by now for college FB, what is your early prediction for Pitt? Can they win 10 again, which would really represent a breakthrough in establishing their program(i.e. it wasn’t just Pickett).  WVU and Tennessee back to back to start the season is challenging.
Zeise
12:50
I think they win 10 again. Yes. It may be nine in the regular season and a bowl game but they are going to be good again
