What do you think of Pitt’s new OC and why do these guys move around so much?
Zeise
12:52
I like Frank a lot. He is really good and I like his offense. He has been a nomad for sure but I like what he does. I think all of them are trying to angle themselves as head coaches

Let’s just say that all the supposed first round quarterbacks (Pickett, Corral, Howell, Willis) are available when the Steelers pick at 20…do they pick one of them or go after OL, DL, ILB help and kick the QB dilemma down the road until 2023?
Zeise
12:53
I think if there is a really good offensive lineman or defensive lineman on the board they should pick him

What’s the likelihood of Tuitt ever playing football again?
Zeise
12:53
I think he will play again but it won’t be for the Steelers

Hello Paul.  It was nice to see the Bruins retire Willie Ree’s number. From what I have learned, he has given back to the game quite a bit.  Did you ever meet him?  Thank you Paul.
Zeise
12:55
I did. I wrote a story about him when he visited a Boys and Girls Club, I think it was in Wilkinsburg. We talked for a while and he was reallu

really fascinating.

Paul, we are strongly considering emulating our former cross-town cohort Jimmy R. and reversing/correcting the whole Bush thing, one way or another. The question is, will the involved egos allow it? Could we leave him unprotected somehow in the next expansion draft?
Zeise
12:57
It will be VERY interesting to see if he gets a 5th year option picked up. I don’t think they should but I can’t imagine they won’t

Odds that Canada will be relieved of OC duties?
Zeise
12:57
Based on Mike Tomlin’s comments the other day? I would say they aren’t great. I think he will be back based on what Tomlin said but who knows

FA QB that you would like to see the Steelers bring in for next year?
Zeise
12:58
Like I said before - if they are going to go to the scrap heap the only one that would interest me is Winston

Lot's of criticism about the Steelers ("Stale Curtain"). Let's be business people about it. What is the business comparable we admire? The Saints post Brees? The Pats post Brady? The Texans post Watson?

I see one free agent deal in football history that made a team elite (Brady to TB) and every other elite team got lucky with a QB in the draft.  Realistically is there any other way?
Zeise

I know he was a “trade” technically but what about Peyton Manning who was allowed to shop for his new team? And there have been some others who maybe didn’t win a Super Bowl but took a ream to the next level. In general you are right but that’s because teams that get a good quarterback aren’t likely to let them go

Is the upcoming draft considered deep in those positions where the Steelers need help, such the offensive and defensive lines, inside linebacker and secondary?  Thanks.
Zeise
1:03
From what I can tell, yes. The one position it isn’t deep - quarterback

Do you have any feel for the way the Steelers are going to go next year with the QB situation? Other than Pickett, the draft is not going to be deep at QB. Do we spend the picks shoring up both lines, pick up a free agent QB, and go with the personnel already under contract? MR and DH haven't showed much but neither did BB with our patchwork O-Line.
Zeise

I do not believe it will be a rookie starting - I think it will be either Rudolph or Haskins or a scrap heap veteran guy

Only six of the thirty-two starting QBs in the NFL this year (Prescott, Heinicke, Cousins, Wilson, Garoppolo and he who shall remain nameless in Tampa) were not selected in the first round of their respective drafts. I'm excluding David Mills for obvious reasons. Two are star QBs (Wilson and the guy in Tampa), three are serviceable but flawed (Prescott, Cousins, Garoppolo) and one is a nice story but should be a backup (Heinicke). My point is that to win in the NFL you need a first round pick under center. And if Pickett or Willis are available at 20 when the Steelers pick they need to take one of them.
Zeise
1:06
But if you don’t think either of those two is a franchise quarterback, do you still take him just to have a first round quarterback?

Hi Paul, has Frank Cignetti been hired at Pitt officially and do you think his system is such that the offense can quickly adapt to plug and play at a high level?
Zeise
1:07
I don’t think it has been officially announced but it seems like it is going to happen. And I think his offense will be perfect for what Pitt has coming back. I expect Pitt’s offense to be really good

A question of a different kind.  We just witnessed Ben turn into a noodle arm , along with a workout warrior like Drew Brees and a Philip Rivers.   Yet Tom Brady at a much more advance age is still slinging it.   We have seen athletes perform at a level they shouldn't at an age they shouldn't, like a Bonds and have the reason why.  My question is, avocado ice cream aside, when do the talking heads start to rationally question Brady and his " agelessness" ?
Zeise
1:09
What are you suggesting? Lol. Have you ever seen that guys diet and workout regimen? He is a freak. Some of it is he has also not gotten hit as much as Ben and Manning - who both had injuries shorten their careers in some ways

Which unit underperformed expectations this season, QB, OL or WRs?  I would argue WRs b/c many thought the group was at least above average.  And was that OL unit the worst unit you've ever seen from a Steelers team?
Zeise
1:10
The OL stunk but you are right - based on expectations the receivers were the most underachieving group on the team

Paul, as long as I have the biggest paycheck among the coaching personnel, no way I'm giving up defensive play calling, correct? Despite all recent evidence, I steadfastly cling to the notion that I am an above-average defensive coordinator.
Zeise

I suppose giving up 171 points in four playoff games is not the best thing on your resume

The Steelers should have drafted Creed Humphrey in the second round over PF. Agree?

To quote Walt Harris “hindsight is always 50/50”
3rd and 8.

For years, Kyle Shanahan has been able to establish a running game with a decent O-line and a collection of no name running backs.  Schematically, what does he do different than we do?
Zeise
1:12
It is a mindset not a scheme. And he hasn’t had to acquiesce to a fading Hall of Fame quarterback who wanted to chuck it every down
Bernard
1:12
OL and DL have to be a focus in the draft but don't the Steelers have to address ILB as well?  None of the 3 primary options there are even average NFL starters.
Zeise
1:13
I would rank OL, DL, ILB, Corner and receiver should all be ahead of QB on the priority list

Paul, I asked Ray this same question and was underwhelmed by the generality of his answer, so to you:  specify the 3 or 4 steps the Steelers should take before this spring's draft to fix their many problems.
Zeise

Fire Canada and let Butler retire. Go outside the organization to replace them with veteran successful coordinators - and and make it clear the defensive coordinator will actually run the defense. Hire an experienced offensive line coach. Spend free agent dollars on offensive line, defensive line and inside linebacker
Definitive enough?
