Paul, I’m a fan of Cole Tucker, but have to admit I’ve been disappointed in his career to date.  Do you think he has future with the Pirates?  Thank you!
Zeise
12:42
I am starting to believe he is another poor draft choice by the old regime and he will never become a legitimate Major League every day player
12:43
He is still young enough but he doesn’t strike me as a guy with enormous potential who is gong to figure it out all of the sudden
Gene
12:43
Do you think we will see more restructuring of Steeler contracts in the next few days?
Zeise
12:45
Yes there are a few they will redo to free up some space. Ray Fittipaldo said they will probably free up about $12 million cap space which is good for them to sign a few low cost free agents

Hey, Paul.  I loved baseball as a kid & teenager.  My team was the California Angels of the late 70's & 80's.  And oddball being from Pittsburgh.  I lost interest in the game years ago, mostly due to the state of MLB (no salary cap, season too long, Pirates not competitive, etc.).  If you were the commissioner, how would you get me back as a fan?
Zeise
12:46
Revenue sharing, salary cap, universal DH, pitch clock, cut mound visits even more. Those would be a good place to start

12:46
Hey Paul...do you think the Pens will make a big trade before the deadline?  Thanks.
Zeise
12:46
Big? It depends on your definition of big. I do think they will make a deal or two but I’m not sure they will be moves that definitively move the dial

12:47
Do you think Cam Heyward would be signing for $16 million a year if he were a free agent right now?  Aren't premature extensions that pay good players great money the reason that the Steelers are in cap jail every year?
Zeise
12:47
it is the cost of doing business and the Steelers like their own players more than they like other players
Hoops, there it is
12:48
PZ...to paraphrase the late great Bob Johnson, it’s a great day for college basketball.  Who’s your final four and pick to win it all?
Zeise
12:48
Boring, I know but I like Texas, Zags, Illinois and Baylor and Zags to beat Illinois. This tournament feels like it will be dominated by the best twams
Pete Rose
12:49
Mr. Zeise, do you think they'll let me in Cooperstown after I die?
Zeise
12:52
Probably not which is so dumb given how prolific gambling is these days and how much in bed with these sports betting apps these leagues are in. And also Rose never gambled on his team as a player and should be inducted as a player

12:53
Paul, how do you feel Steelers free agency is going so far?
Zeise
12:54
It is going about how we all thought, right? This is what they do every year so it isn’t a surprise. I do think they have lost a bunch of talent on defense and need to replace them

12:54
Paul, what can you say about the Steelers' bizarre off-season strategy? They keep Ben and then let the team evaporate around him. On what planet does this make sense?
Zeise
12:55
I agree - if they made the decision to bring Ben Roethlisberger back they should have also made the decision to do everything in their power to clear enough cap space to add players

Thanks for the chats Paul.  Any news or thoughts as why so many Pitt players entered the transfer portal?  Do you think Coach Capel can rectify the situation and get the program back on track to compete with perennial successful basketball programs?
Zeise
12:58
Xavier Johnson and Au’Diese Toney hurt and are a setback. The rest are guys the either knew were leaving or weren’t particularly relevant. It will be hard for Pitt to compete for a NCAA bid next year but if he recruits well and they fill some of their holes they could get there in 2022-23, his fifth year

12:58
Why would the Steelers have any interest in bringing back Villanueva who showed his age last season? Who do you think is behind this move i.e. KC, Tomlin, Rooney, OL coach>
Zeise
12:59
Again they are probably thinking that if they can get him at a cheap price he is going to be a better option than anything  else they could sign

Hi, Paul!  Did you ever notice that NFL pylons are actually placed out of bounds? Seems like an erroneous configuration to me, considering that TDS are called if the ball touches or crosses the invisible plane of the pylons.
Zeise

I’ll take your word for it but I never noticed it

Paul...I am seeing a lot of delusional rationalization among Steelers fans and even a few media types.  Retirements, cap casualties, big contracts on aging vets and maybe the most difficult 2022 NFL schedule looks to make the Steelers an also-ran next season.  Are you seeing the problems ahead for this team or are you with the delusional crowd?
Zeise
1:03
I think the window for a Super Bowl has closed. They will fight for a playoff bid but they are not a contender for much more. I see them as a 9-8, maybe 10-7 type team at best

Paul, I don’t envy Capel and other basketball coaches with all this transfer portal business.  All the time invested in recruiting and coaching players can be gone a heartbeat.  It has to be frustrating to say the least.
Zeise
1:05
Yes but the woke among us keep celebrating this as “the year college athletes found their voice!!” Give me a break. I don’t think the fact that it has turned into free agency and the wild Wild West is a good thing. At some point the fact that they are student athletes shouldn’t be forgotten. I get it, coaches can leave why can’t players, but I don’t think this is good for the game

Alualu left because (1) he wanted to go home; (2) he wanted to play for Urban Meyer and with Trevor Lawrence and a team loaded with cap $$$; (3) significantly lower taxes in Florida made a comparable deal better; or (4) Steelers didn't make an offer at all to retain him?
Zeise

All of the above

Hello, Paul.  My time on Earth as a baseball player was incredible.  I had some slight anger issues, mostly because my bad experiences in WWI, but I was not the racist and bigot I was made to be.  In fact, I was vocal about the positive aspect of Negros joining the MLB.  I actually played a game the other day against Jackie & Satchel...they say "hello".  Do you feel the Negro league stats should be merged into MLB?
Zeise
1:07
Wow that is a complex question. My gut is no because they were playing in separate leagues and no amount of woke history cleansing will change that. However I do think many of those Negro League players were among the best players on the planet so they should be recognized as equals to their white peers in whatever way possible

Paul watched my first preseason game last evening. Only a couple of innings. Could the Pirate broadcasters be less energetic? I have never witnessed a more boring broadcast than these guys put out on a nightly basis! I mean I know they don’t have a lot to work with that come on let’s get a little life in you!

I think Greg Brown and company do a great job. This is spring training it is supposed to be laid back

Paul, are you as into this NCAA men's BBall tournament as you normally would be? This has been such a strange season with all of the cancellations that it it never seemed to develop the type of drama that builds up to a great tournament.
Zeise
1:12
Not at all. This season was way too disjointed for me and too many teams had too many pauses, guys are not playing, etc. I’m most interested in the No. 14 seed Stony Brook Sea Wolves on the women’s side......

I think ILB to replace Vince Williams has skyrocketed up the list of team needs. Even Spillane  does not match up as well. Any thoughts what you think the team may do to replace the run stopper they lost in Williams?
Zeise
1:14
I agree I do not think you are going your whole season and having success with Robert Spillane in your starting lineup. He is a nice story and a nice depth guy and not much more

Do any of the Pitt FB players go in the first round of the draft?
