Paul, what is your take on NIL for college athletes?  I am all for them benefiting from the mass popularity of college athletics but this "legal" tampering of luring kids away from their current programs by promising NIL seems to be getting out of hand.
Zeise
11:03
It is no different than before - it is just all out in the open now. That’s the problem. When it was bag men behind the scenes everyone kind of knew it was going on but didn’t have to acknowledge it. This is college Athletics for better or worse

Can the Penguins hang onto 3rd in the Metro or does it matter at this point?  Any scenario where they advance past 1st round?
Zeise
11:04
I think they can hang on to third but with Casey DeSmith in the net I can’t see them beating anyone four times in seven games. If they get to the second round it is a successful season in my book

Well, Paul, we can all take a big time out from wondering who the Steelers will draft with their 1st Rd pick.  Mel Kiper, yes Mel Kiper has predicted (and it will happen) that the Steelers, with their #20 pick, will draft Kenny Pickett.  I don't think so, Mel.  What do you think?
Zeise
11:06
Again, if someone wants to show me what the first 19 picks are gonna be - in other words who is off the board and who is available - I can give you an educated guess as to who the Steelers are taking. Until such time everyone is full of it because there is no way to know who is on the board and who is not

Would you rather be a NHL player or a soccer player playing on a top team that plays in the Champions League.
Zeise
11:06
Probably soccer player because from what I can gather they get paid more than NHL players!

Honestly, besides Pitt basketball, the overall quality of Pitt Athletics is arguably at an all time high. Each team seems to have developed a vision and an identity within the ACC. That seems to be what’s missing with basketball. In the Big East, we developed an identity - a 4 year sleep away and development camp for NY/NJ metro guys to come play other traditional northeast clubs (and friends) and get better. It worked. It was less about just trying to attract any-old body and more about attracting the best of a defined market. Does Capel have a big picture vision of who Pitt is or wants to be within the ACC?
Zeise
11:08
The women’s basketball team is struggling as well. I think both basketball coaches have a vision, know what they need to do and what they need to get there. The problem both have is they haven’t been able to build the roster to get there

On the one hand, football players are professionals; on the other hand, they're human. What discernable effect(s) might Dwayne Haskins's sudden, tragic passing have on the Steelers this year?
Zeise
11:10
I would say very little, and that’s no disrespect to the dead. He was obviously well liked by a lot of guys on that team but the season doesn’t start until Sept. He wasn’t a key player for them; either, and so his impact on the field won’t be felt much at all. Guys will be sad and miss him but I don’t think it will impact their performance

Gregory Polanco has 3 HRs and is hitting .263 for the first place Yomiuri Giants after 22 games.  Sound about right?
Zeise
11:11
I would have thought he may have a few more homers than that over there but I am glad he has found a home

Have you sold off your stock in Netflix yet?
Zeise
11:11
I’m in the newspaper business, I can’t afford stock!!

Malkin’s current skill set does not appear to be worthy of a 1 or 2 line center (although is value on the PP is still high). What kind of contract do Pens offer and where in line up could he play moving forward?
Zeise
11:12
I would not offer him a large contract. And by large I mean make him one of the highest paid players on the team. I would offer him something like $5-$6 million a year for maybe 3 years max
11:13
I think the Pens will offer him less than maybe he wants but that’s business

Hi Paul,
I'd like to take a moment and talk about PITT Basketball. First and foremost I want Coach Capel to be successful.  But my question today is, maybe it's just me, but watching the leadership on the coaching staff in game puzzles me why at times all coaches are standing up on the sidelines screaming, waiving their hands and shouting "whatever" to the playeras on the court.  How can the players stand this and why is it just PITT and not the other teams that do this.  Not Duke, Not Miami, Not Wake, etc.  IT LOOKS FOOLISH and may speak to the comments that Horton's dad made about in game management.  It should STOP.  Let Coach manage the side court while the game is live.
Zeise
11:14
I guess that is the double edged sword of having a few guys who were once head coaches on the bench. They all want to coach! I think that the game management has been worthy of questioning but I’m not sure this is the reason

Your column about the Hayes contract said a lot of what I'd thought about it, specifically if it meant Hayes really doesn't see himself as a guy whose hitting is going to get him a mega contract. But maybe he's like me and believes seventy million birds in hand are worth two hundred million in the bush. Then I thought of Jeff King who, as I recall, didn't have an agent and took a very team friendly deal knowing he could have made a lot more but said 'Really, how much money does one person need?" Of course they traded him in a salary dump before the contract was up and this is the long lead in to my question. Unless Hayes becomes the new Gregory Polanco, do you think he'll play in Pittsburgh until the contract is up?
Zeise
11:16
I think this gives him a chance to stay longer. But again, if the Pirates are bad on year 6,7 and/or 8 he will be seen as a luxury item and traded for a haul of prospects. The contract actually makes him more valuable as a trade chip

Crockpot recipes... have a favorite?
Zeise
11:17
Ha. No I don’t do crock pots. I think most stuff cooked in crock pots tastes the same doesn’t it? I know chicken noodle soup made from scratch in a crock pot is awesome

Who specifically do you feel could make this defense “elite” where a mediocre offense could be enough for a surprise season?
Zeise
11:19
I would say some shut down corner but I’m not sure who that is. I know everyone is in love with honey badger but how much better would he really make this defense?

I see Pitt and WVU extended series in football. Is this a prelude to WVU joining the ACC? Big 12 lost Oklahoma and Texas. ACC makes much sense for travel/rivalries?
Zeise
11:19
I don’t think so, I don’t think the ACC is really looking to add right now and I am not sure WVU would be their first choice anyway

Hello Paul, You mentioned in your Q&A column that Huey Richardson was the biggest 1st round bust of the Steelers draft.  Darryl Sims and Aaron Jones were two who immediately came to mind when reading that bit.  Where would you rank them?
Zeise
11:20
Daryl Sims. Oh you hurt me with that name! Lol. Yes they would definitely be in the mix of worst ever
Chief Powhatan
11:20
Wouldn't a Pens/Jackets Winter Classic at Ohio State's horseshoe be more fun than facing the Bruins at Fenway?
Zeise
11:21
No, not really. Columbus stinks and now that Torts isn’t there, there isn’t much interesting about that team.

What are the chances the Steelers trade up in the second round to get someone like Desmond Riddee?
Zeise
11:21
If he is still there at pick, say 45, I could absolutely see that happening

11:22
Needing at least two more QBs for camp, would you be shocked if the Steelers signed Kaepernick?
Zeise
11:22
Yes. I don’t see that as the direction they would go at all
