Well the thing is, the team has been somewhat competitive and played good baseball at times. That's all fans ask for.
Bernard
12:28
Thinking about Ingram and L Blount, and now Trubisky.  Does the Steelers FO/MT mislead these free agents a bit about their plans and playing time  coming in?
Zeise
12:29
No, all these guys know there is competition and will be competition for their jobs. They should have traded Trubisky for a third or fourth rounder. They really should have. But he had to know they could draft a quarterback

Paul, is the recent PITT basketball commits a sign there is life in the zoo?
Zeise
12:30
There is some life but they need to win games. Nothing else matters at this point. IF they have a great class and go 6-14 again it has to be the end. They need to win.
Bernard

All the chatter about Pickett having a "high floor" rather than elite upside isn't what you want to hear about a first round QB.  Do you think Pickett has the talent to be a top 10ish type NFL QB?
Zeise
12:31
I would say that he has a chance to be a sold starter for a long time. And I would think that given how the Steelers like to build a defense, if it is built right and they continue to develop their run game, he could be good enough for them to win

Not sure I have ever seen a team get walloped like the Pens did in the 1st period and still keep their composure. Reeves was a scary dude. Do you think Sullivan adjustments were the reason for success, or did the Rangers spend ALL their energy in 20 minutes. It looked like they hit the proverbial wall after 20 minutes?
Zeise
12:32
I think the Pens are just a gritty, tough minded team and they took the Rangers best shot and kept fighting and fighting. They willed their way to a win. That's who they have been for a lot of years.

Good afternoon Paul.  If the Steelers opt to hire a GM outside the organization, who would you like to see them hire?  Do you have a favorite inside or outside the organization?  Thank you.
Zeise
12:33
I have said often that a combination of Brandon Hunt and Omar Khan will best serve the Steelers.

Hey Paul.  I’ve been a fan of Ed Bouchette and hope he enjoys retirement.  Any thoughts/stories you care to share?  Thanks.
Zeise
12:35
Ed is a great person and he is really good to work with. When I first started at the Post-Gazette he was very gracious to talk to me and mentor me and when I filled in on Steelers stuff here and there he was always willing to help. He is a class act. And for a long time he absolutely owned the Steelers beat and completely dominated the competition

Paul and Gerry back to back chats Wow!
Zeise
12:35
That's almost like overload

12:35
Paul, can Flores and Austin help stop the run?....its obvious our draft is not. By the way, I liked the Pickett pick! H2P
Zeise
12:36
Yes, I think the Steelers run defense will be better because the defensive line will be better. And I think that it won't be about scheme, it will be about players playing better
Mercury

What did you think of the umpire’s behavior with Bumgarner last night?
Zeise
12:37
The umpire was a jerk and should be suspended. He should not be allowed to get away with baiting Bumgarner and if I were MadBum I would have gone ballistic as well.

Hello Paul.  Do you think the retirements of Roy Williams, Coach K and Jay Wright were due in part to the current transfer portal policy?  Thank you Paul.
Zeise
12:38
Yes, at least in two of the three cases. Williams made it clear he hated the way college basketball was going and Wright hinted at it. Coach K, I think, had some health concerns and is getting really old and wants to explore some other things.

Why was Colbert still trying to blow smoke yesterday about Tuitt’s knee injury?
Zeise
12:39
Because they are trying to protect him as much as possible
Bernard
12:39
If Tuitt doesn't play again this season, are the Steelers on the hook for his salary (again) and what are the cap ramifications?
Zeise
12:40
I don't think so but I do think there will be cap ramifications. They need him to play and play well, for sure
John

Hi Paul. How about Cincinnati's record 3-17 so far? Payroll of $113 Million Opening Day. And I thought we stunk.  Ours is $57 Million (was probably around $40M before Hayes & Reynolds signings). That is not a good optic so far for all us Nutting haters.
Zeise
12:42
The difference is they have 41 million tied up in Votto and Moustakis. Those are two awful contracts and they will struggle to unload them, That really is the difference between the two teams payrolls
John
12:42
I am very pleased that the Steelers seem to have finally conceded that they are much better off taking DBs in FA and via trades. Why do you think they have been so abysmal at drafting DBs under Tomlin/Colbert?
Zeise
12:44
I think because they like the same kind  of athlete for that position. I think the biggest thing is they need to focus on production and stop being so beholden to "athleticism" and other measurables
Amanda
12:44
Look Ziesey ive decided to make amends with you and walls. And now since im a lush i figured we could all get together and swallow the pride or you and the Wallstar can take those or swallows these later that night!
Zeise
12:44
It is Walsh!!
Donna
12:44
Hi Paul, when is the latest time the Steelers have to make a decision on Tuitt?   If you had to bet on it, do you think he plays this upcoming season?  Thank you.
Zeise
12:45
I think he will. They should give him a deadline of the first day of camp, though, because you can't just keep letting that situation roll on and on and on
Mercury
12:46
Any word on DeSmith for tonight? Was he injured or was he just cramping up from all that time out there?
Zeise
12:46
I don't know exactly what happened with him but it sounds like he is out for the game, which means Louie, Louie will be starting the game
Amanda
12:46
Hey everyone! Anyone notice Paul isn't appearing anymore on the Nightly Sports Call? My petition worked! Him and Walls thought by promoting drinking on the air that would help their career. Wrong! You are a joke Paul and you should be ashamed of what you've done! Ashamed! Ashamed! And by the way my husband says you aren't missed either.
Zeise
12:47
I've been out of town the last few weekends. Have another beer. See ya tomorrow night!!

Why would any team have two QB picks?  Why?
Zeise
12:47
The second one the Steelers picked is an athlete and a perfect candidate for the practice squad and development
Rhonda

Do you think any of the free agents signed by the Steelers after the draft have a decent chance to make the team?
