If the Pirates draft a high school shortstop with the first overall pick, how many seasons will he play with Ke'Bryan Hayes at third base?
Zeise
12:12
That’s a great question. I would say none. That is the cynical side of me but a high school kid probably won’t be in the majors for five years. Hayes may still be here in five years but not likely

Hello Paul,  Aside from "Prospect" trades, what have Cherington & Co done to repair or upgrade the Bucco's farm system? For example, have new instructors, managers, coaches, scouts, etc. been hired (old ones fired)? Have there been any significant philosophy changes on how to develop young talent? Might the Pirates be pilfering/hiring some personnel from Tampa's, or any team's, instructional system, new scouts, or something to that effect?  Otherwise, it's fireworks, bobbleheads, and Pirohi races for the next decade or so,,....
Zeise
12:13
From what I can gather they have changed everything about the way they do everything. New instructors, new methods, new philosophies, so yes it is more than just an upgrade of talent in the minor league system

Is D. Bush a pro bowl level MLB and, if not, did the Steelers give up to much to draft him?
Zeise
12:14
Well time will tell. The larger question is can he stay healthy - at his size - enough to have that kind of impact

Saw an article where Coach Tomlin was pegged as a future superstar TV analyst. What athletes can you think of that might be good in that role?
Zeise
12:15
I can’t see Tomlin ever leaving the sidelines. He loves it too much. He loves football and the process of coaching too much. From the Pittsburgh stable, Cam Heyward would be really good and believe it or not I think Ben Roethlisberger would be good. And probably Ke’Bryan Hayes from the Pirates

What does the Steelers front office and staff see in Mason Rudolph that fans generally don't?
Zeise
12:17
They see a guy who throws the deep ball well, who studies and works his tail off, who seems to be a team guy and someone who has potential.

Keep reading about teams looking at TJ McConnell as UFA....Miami, Lakers, Cleve. I would love to see him with LeBron but I don't want to state up that late to watch. Where do you see him going?
Zeise
12:19
There are a lot of rumors out there but how cool is that a local kid has that kind of interest. We aren’t blessed with many basketball stars from this area that get to the NBA but right now with TJ and Cam Johnson, we have two excellent players who are both making an impact

Would you rather the Penguins win the Stanley cup in 1993 or the Steelers beat the Cowboys or Packers in their 2 Super Bowl losses?
Zeise
12:20
The Steelers over the Cowboys and it isn’t close. Nobody gave the Steelers a chance and the Cowboys with Jerry Jones and Barry Switzer were just obnoxious
Bernard

If Hextall and Burke start transitioning the Pens to a bigger, more physical hockey team, is Sullivan the right guy to coach the team?  I don't know much about hockey, but can a coach that has taught and succeeded with one style of play for so long simply pivot to another philosophy and see the same type of success?
Zeise
12:21
No I don’t think so and I think that will ultimately lead to their divorce - meaning Sullivan parting ways with the Pens. If the style of hockey that is being played and pushed isn’t what Sullivan likes to coach why would he stay

You like the Brooksie-Bryson dustup? Any good athlete grudges  you enjoyed?
Zeise
12:21
I love it. It adds somw
12:22
some spice to golf. It is fun. And it is the way things should be. A little tension is good for the drama and storylines

College athletes are getting what they deserve on the SCOTUS ruling about income from likenesses. But this transfer at will thing is really making it hard to invest your emotions in a player or school. What do you think?
Zeise
12:23
I don’t know, there is turnover every year and crowds and fan bases are still huge. People come and go, the uniform and colors stay the same. In the end we are all rooting for uniforms not people

Will Pitt ever be Top 20 or better under Capel and/or Narduzzi? Which one has the best shot?
Zeise
12:24
I think Pitt has a great chance to be a top 20 team this year in football. If they aren’t doing yay could be a problem. This should be their year. Capel is a few years away

I'm a Steelers fan from the '70s but grew up in Central PA.  I loved Terry Bradshaw and still find him entertaining on Fox.  I've read he's bipolar and, having a child with that illness, I'm curious if that's true.  Also, why does the Pittsburgh media and a lot of fans seem to dislike him?  The guy won the city 4 Super Bowls!
Zeise
12:25
He has talked openly about his mental health. And he has talked openly about the way he has battled it. And he has admitted that he has caused some of the rift between him and the fans of this town but he has worked hard to repair it in recent years

If the Supreme Court ruling vs.the NCAA makes the cost of D! sports too high doing what Hartford's doing and going to DIII makes sense. And DIII, and maybe the Ivies, come closest to the ideal of the student athlete. Do you see it as good, bad,or indifferent? There can be no athletic scholarships but the Ivies and many DIII schools get substantial aid to students they want. And could bottom feeders in 1-A football go to 1-AA  or maybe agree to lower the number of scholarships given out in their respective leagues? Or do you think the most common response will be to slash and burn non revenue sports either eliminating scholarships in those sports or even the entire sport?
Zeise
12:27
It is not good to take away opportunities at free educations from kids. The Ivies and high academic D-3 schools have a model that might not work for the bigger schools

Thanks for the chats Paul.  Whereas I agree Jarry was horrible in the playoffs I am not sure why we think he is the biggest blame.  The guy was being talked about getting the top goalie award (forget what it was called).  It was his first playoff appearance so isn't it safe to say he is only going to learn from his experience?  Aside from Murray what other top goalies struggled their first year?  probably a lot.  Again he was horrible in the playoffs but so were a lot of other things.  Keep Jarry and get some calls that can stand tall in puck battles
Zeise
12:28
As I have said numerous times - this is a team that has lost 15 of 19 playoff games. The goalie is not the only problem. And I agree he played well enough in the playoffs that he should get another chance
12:29
Sorry I mean - he played well enough in the regular season that he should get another chance
Bernard
12:29
I worry about the recent NCAA ruling.  I'm a Buckeye so frankly we'll benefit.  But the impact this has on smaller schools will be brutal.  Also, how does Title 9 come into play?  Something tells me a ton of collegiate Olympic sports teams are goners (wrestling is always the first to go b/c it is a ton of male scholarship athletes with no female counterparts, so it gets the #s down quickly).
Zeise
12:30
Think about how many schools first reaction is to cut sports. That’s a problem. That’s going to continue to happen and probably even more now
Jake
12:31
A couple big ifs, but if the Steelers sign M Hooker and he can stay healthy. I think he would replace Edmonds at SS and him and Minkah would be one of the best safety pairings in the league
Zeise
12:31
I don’t think he would replace Edmunds, at least not initially. But he would be a very nice addition to the secondary

I have seen the 60's Pirates, the Lumber Co., We are Family. What are these? The Keystone Cops?
Zeise
12:33
That is a little rough. The guys for the most part play really hard and tough and give it their all. They just aren’t very good
Rock Knee
12:33
Piling onto my previous question, how has the story of NCAA schools making tens of millions of dollars from uncompensated athletes become the one we all read? It's maybe true at Michigan or Texas but far from true at U Mass or Rice. And as you indicated, how is getting something that most people pay between $200,000 to $600,000 to get end up being called getting nothing?
Zeise
12:34
Because once a narrative is created it is hard to break it - no matter what the facts are.
Bernard
12:34
Don't understand the guy that calls you out as a right-winger?  Is that b/c you called out the governor for shutting down sports?
Zeise
12:39
Because in the woke mind anyone who doesn’t agree with them or has a difference of opinion is automatically a right wing Trumper. They can’t conceive of the idea that most people reside in the middle and wish extremist wacknuts on both sides would shut up and leave us alone
