OK let’s get started. Welcome back after a week off!!

Wouldn't Pitt and Notre Dame work nicely in the Big 10 ?
Zeise
11:34
I have yet to hear anyone tell me what Pitt adds to the Big Ten. It doesn’t add a new market and that’s a huge problem for Pitt
Dave
11:35
I’ve seen Pirate fans giddy about certain trades we made. Never mind the fact that the team is going to finish 68-94 & the player traded is a cy young contender. When did it not become about winning the games, isn’t that why they are played?
Zeise
11:38
It is about winning. They have maybe two pitchers that are gonna be standouts, they have a potential star shortstop of the future, a third baseman locked up, a young outfielder showing power - it is about winning but they are building for the future right now. There are some signs it could get a lot better

Thanks for the chats Paul.  With it comes to the pens it feels like we are going through this "here we go again" phase with the signing of Desmith and soon to be Letang.  Whereas the pens are good and fun to watch they are still long shots to win the cup.  If thats the goal then some pieces have to change.  If not then we should start the rebuild NOW.  I never thought I would say this but might be time to move Crosby for a boat load of pics and young talent.  I know it is not a popular idea...but I am sure trading Gretsky wasnt either!
Zeise
11:39
I laugh at how defensive Penguins fans are when you point out they lost five playoff series in a row and stars aren’t getting any younger. If the goal is to get to the playoffs and lose in the first round, well they are on the right path
Grumpy Bear
11:40
Now we know that Van Meter can't pitch either. Position players pitching in games should be banned. What do you think?
Zeise
11:41
I just think there needs to be a mercy rule of sorts. Or expand the rosters to include three pitchers. You could make it like football - 29-man roster with three inactives every day so you still have 26-man active roster for games

Good Morning Paul & thanks for the chat.  What moves at the trade deadline do you see the Pirates making?  If they move Reynolds or Bednar, do you think that diminishes the perception that the Pirates are truly trying to build consistent MLB caliber team?
Zeise
11:41
They should move Bednar. His value is never gonna be higher and a closer on a bad team going nowhere is not particularly usefill
11:42
useful.  If they aren’t gonna sign Reynolds long term they should trade him now while he still has a year of control beyond this and that makes him more valuable

Hi Paul, I’m a fan of your writing and generally agree. I’m nitpicking (but that’s what sports chats are for) but when you wrote that Ben was a “likely” HoFer were you trolling? I would say he’s a certain HoFer and “likely” first ballot.
Zeise
11:43
He is definitely a Hall of Famer. But “likely” is accurate because there is that .000001 percent he doesn’t make it!
Dave
11:43
Sorry Paul I didn’t see you wrote about the Pirates trades yesterday. But to include your article shouldn’t the Pirates be required to put forth a competitive team so trades like these aren’t necessary. They basically say we are not going to try for years at a time.
Zeise
11:44
This is what they are building towards and trying to do. They broke it down and now are trying to build it up
Mercury
11:44
Do you think Mitch Keller is ever going to amount to anything with the Pirates? Should they consider trading him while his potential may still be high in other teams’ eyes?
Zeise
11:45
No. They should trade him and move on from this ridiculous attempt to prove he can be a great pitcher. At this point he is what he is
ev

Paul, the realigned ACC (football conference) concerns me as Pitt is in an every year showdown with only three (four?) other schools, where neither has been a powerhouse.  Is the ACC tiering their teams in preparation for separating from the conference?  I am more comfortable with a two division system.  With the new one, I would prefer Pitt to play Clemson, Miami or Fl State each year.
Zeise
11:47
I think Pitt fans need to chill out. It will all work out in the end. The two mega conferences need someone to play and that means the playoff will include other conferences. Pitt will be fine
Mercury
11:52
When was the last time you went to a theatre to watch a movie?
Zeise
11:52
A few weeks ago I saw the new Top Gun. What a fantastic movie

11:54
Paul, Should Notre Dame join the ACC football conference, will both be saved from irrelevance (in wake of the Bigger 10plus and SEC mega conferences)?
Zeise
11:55
Notre Dame is going to join a conference and it will probably be the Big Ten. Their TV deal is no longer competitive with what the Big Ten can offer. They will never be irrelevant and always hold the key to whatever is next in expansion

Paul, sports in general doesn't align with the spirit of sports even 20 years ago. The $ being thrown around is hard to imagine , with the economy being what it is. It has become a money grab. hard to root for a team because the favorite players are already planning their escape for even more money. Where and when will it end.
Zeise
11:57
I believe the law of diminishing returns will kick in at some point and the money will have to be scaled back some everywhere except maybe the NFL
ev
11:58
Paul, Agreed, the return for the Jameson Taillon trade has benefitted the Pirates.  But, wouldn't the Pirates be benefitted with Taillon, Cole, and Josh Bell still on the roster?  Would they not be contending now?
Zeise
11:59
If ifs were fifths we would all be drunk. Those guys are gone all we can do is look forward
Retire21
11:59
Bad things come in threes. No wait transfer portal, NIL, conferences poaching new members. Pitt is a net loser in all this, don’t you think?
Zeise
11:59
I do not

Cruz=Polanco?
Zeise
12:00
Cruz has shown me he has better instincts for baseball than Polanco did. But he needs to move to the outfield. That much seems clear to me from watching him at short so far
ev
12:02
Paul, who do you see the Pirates trading in the next few weeks?  Newman, Gamel, Bednar?
Zeise
12:03
Camel and Yoshi. I would think Bednar perhaps. If someone takes Newman they should do it tomorrow!

While seemingly iron-clad, I have to think that somehow, lawyers for ACC institutions will find a way to get out of the grant of rights agreement. If/when that happens, do you see Pitt getting snapped up by the B1G or SEC; or, will they be destined to hope they are part of whichever conference sets themselves up to be #3? Basically, is Pitt attractive enough to sit at the 'big boy table' when this round of conference realignment gets sorted out?
Zeise
12:05
Again, I think Pitt will be fine. These leagues all need teams and will exist in some form. Pitt will be aligned with other really good institutions and programs and sustain a major program. I don’t know what it will all look like in the end but the doom and gloom stuff is silly

12:06
Mason was gone the minute they drafted the second QB because they can’t count on the 7th rounder clearing waivers. Over/under August 1 as departure?
Zeise
12:09
I would say end of training camp unless there is an injury somewhere else and a team needs a quarterback. The number of trade partners won’t expand until the end of training camp when teams realize they don’t have a good backup or injuries or whatever. The Steelers will likely keep the charade going until they can find someone who will trade for him

Could you throw your two cents in regarding where Pitt and WVU will land with conference realignment and what's going to happen to the ACC and big 12?
Zeise
12:10
The PAC 12, Big 12 and ACC will look different and may even have some sort of partnership but I see almost none of the current teams - especially WVU and Pitt - being left out like UConn was the last time around. UConn was left out because their football program is worthless and in the end they are back in the league they should have been in all along
