When it is reported that “the NFL” is appealing Watson’s punishment, who exactly is that? The owners, Roger, an administrative team???? How is it decided to appeal?
Zeise
11:59
It is the NFL appealing the decision - but Roger Goodell won't be overseeing it. Roger Goodell's flunky, however, will oversee it and magically come to the same conclusion Goodell would have. It is a farce in so many ways and the union is really dumb for allowing this to happen

Can you think of any legitimate reason why marijuana use should rate a suspension in pro sports, assuming it was obtained, possessed, and used legally just like alcohol?
Zeise
11:59
Are there any sports where it still merits a suspension? I don't even think they test in the NFL any more and they basically just fine guys for it

Just curious, with all the flack about golfers taking Saudi money, have you heard anyone complain about Brittany Grier taking Putin/Russian oligarch cash?  If so, was that person condemned?
Zeise
12:00
I have not but this is an interesting discussion that I am sure will never see the light of day

Pickett was touted as the most pro ready quarterback in the draft. But it seems like he is destined for a redshirt season. How does that sit with you?
Zeise
12:02
Saying Pickett is the most "pro ready" quarterback of this group this year in the draft is like saying you are the skinniest person at the fat farm

Although nothing more than a PR move by both the Steelers and the Pirates, how many is too many for their respective Halls of Fame? At least with the Steelers and no doubt in the future with the Pirates, it won't be a matter of who is in them but about the few who are. Of course, the same complaint could be made regarding all Halls of Fame!
Zeise
12:03
There should be as many people in the Hall of Fame as deserve to be there, and in my mind that means less than actually get in. The Hall of Fame is something that should be reserved for the elite of the elite

Hi Paul thanks for the chats! I know you will get this question 100 times today but can the Steelers afford Roquan Smith as he would be an obvious upgrade from Bush. If so, what would the Bears want/need to make the trade happen?
Zeise
12:04
It doesn't seem like he would fit under their cap and they would have an extremely expensive defensive, which, you can get away with if you aren't paying your QB the big, big money but the hope is in a few years they will be forced to pay their QB

I think it was Notre Dame's AD who just said something like the TV deal between the Big Ten and NBC seemed ideal for Notre Dame. Does that mean ND is seriously thinking of joining the Big Ten?
Zeise
12:05
I don't know if I would connect those dots all the way but it is something that was interesting. He could have just meant that by bringing the Big Ten to NBC it increases the visibility of college football on that station and that would be good for Notre Dame

There are MLB teams with smaller payrolls and better records than the Pirates. Cleveland is one and they're legitimate post season contenders. What are they doing that the Pirates aren't? And if the Pirates don't show clear improvement how long do we keep believing in the rebuild?
Zeise
12:06
Cleveland I think has the youngest roster in MLB. So they clearly have drafted, developed and traded for prospects better than the Pirates. I think if there isn't real, tangible progress next season then you start to wonder if it is ever going to happen

When did batting averages and RBIs become meaningless statistics in baseball replaced by such nonsense as exit velocity and WARs?
Zeise
12:06
When we let the math guys take over the game!!!

Hello Paul, What does Van Meter offer the Pirates by his presence?
Zeise
12:07
Well, those nights when they get blown out, he is pretty good at being a relief pitcher and preserving the arms of the real bullpen guys!!

12:07
Paul, Why is the league allowing DeShaun Watson to play, albeit in a practice game?  When is a suspension not a suspension in the NFL?
Zeise
12:07
Because his suspension doesn't start until the regular season starts. If you remember, Ben played in preseason games the year he was suspended, then sat out the first four games, then came back and played.

Pitt-WVU sold out instantly. What’s the argument of keeping them out of the ACC? Especially if the conference loses Miami ,FSU and or VT?
Zeise
12:08
What does Pitt-WVU selling out have to do with the ACC inviting WVU?

When are Pirate fans going to realize that just because he is the owner, Nutting is not obligated to spend money on the team? Like it or not, it is a business and, like all business owners, his goal is to make money, not spend it!
Zeise
12:09
Most people do realize that. It doesn't mean they have to be happy about it. People want to see the Pirates succeed.

Seems through various sports writers, it looks as though Mason is outplaying both Mitch and Kenny in practice. Now we all know practice is practice and games are where it counts but....If he keeps it up during preseason, do they start Mason and sit Mitch or do they trade Mason right before the season starts as his value would be high?
Zeise
12:09
Mitch Trubisky will be the starting quarterback. The rest of it is all just noise
ev
12:09
Paul, It would be nice to get the LB from Chicago, but it's all for naught if the OL isn't up to snuff.  Other writers, (Fittipaldo, Dulac) point out that, although a game hasn't been played, that the OL is a top concern.
Zeise
12:10
I agree but we won't know until the games begin. There are essentially three new starters on the offensive line and so it may take a few weeks for them to come together.

The Pirates are the laughing stock of the nation. Getting picked of second in OT, missing first base on a HR and  now running the bases with a cell phone in your pocket!!! Isn’t this a reflection on Shelton’s lax management??
Zeise
12:11
I think it is a reflection of a team that has young players or players who just aren't very good. I am not sure that it is a reflection of much of anything Shelton is doing

Where would you rank the Browns Watson trade in NFL history?  The only two I can think of that might compare is the Dallas Hershel Walker robbery and Ditka getting Rickey Williams for the Saints.  Any other ones come to mind?
Zeise
12:12
There is no way to answer that until the games begin. What if he goes out and leads them to the Super Bowl twice in the next four years? The games need to be played before we figure that out

12:13
The Steelers didn’t draft the second  QB to lose him on waivers. Isn’t  the the best argument Mason or Mitch go down the road?
Zeise
12:14
The Steelers drafted the first quarterback, Pickett, and they won't lose him on waivers. They will go with Trubisky and Pickett will back him up
