Well it looks like the fans will get what they want for the rest of the season with all the kids coming up from AAA to play. The flip side of that is the the Buccos will probably lose over 100 games with no end in sight. What they need desperately is pitching and the farm system does not have major league ready arms. It's tough to see Anderson, Cole, Quintana and Holmes pitching well for other teams so the off season should be spent upgrading an awful pitching staff. What year will they finally spend some money to be competitive?
Zeise
12:16
They won't spend money until they have to. And they won't have to until they are close to being a winning team. So the answer is - well is there an answer? if Nutting could figure out how to go 82-80 every year without spending money he would do it

Any word from Pitt camp on who is leading the QB1 race between Slovis and Patti? I would think Slovis will be the starter based on pedigree alone but Patti looks like a fighter.
Zeise
12:17
There is no word but from what I have been told it is Slovis job to lose. Pitt camp, unlike the Steelers, is closed to the media so nobody knows who is doing what and all the info is basically controlled by Pitt.

Am I being impatient, or should the Buccos be showing/producing a bit more than what is shown on the field?  Seems to me, too much rotation of players & lineup changes--not sure how MOST players can get comfortable & or in a groove!
Zeise
12:18
I think a lot of that lineup changing stuff had to do with trying to showcase veteran players and trying to get players some at bats and reps in the field. Now that the trade deadline is passed I would expect the lineups to be more consistent

George Pickens was rumored to have "character concerns" prior to the draft. I know you may have not talked with him much (or ever) but have you heard any rumblings of this? Clearly he talks a lot of trash on the field, but in the interviews he's done he seems like a pretty decent guy. Any insight?
Zeise
12:19
It was more like maturity concerns and by all accounts they were way overstated. The larger issue as to why he fell in the draft a little was he had some injury concerns. His character is fine

With the DH universal now and next year every team playing every team in the new format, MLB is essentially one league. Add two expansion teams, split into 8 4-team divisions ala NFL land re-seed it by market size. Pittsburgh in with Cleve, Cincy and Detroit. Only I can fix it?
Zeise
12:20
Why would the big market teams allow that to happen?

A recent guest on a local podcast applauded purposely tanking and losing games, saying that  is the way to go. You may have been there. Do you think the Pirates are tanking and losing games on purpose?
Zeise
12:25
They aren't tanking - they did that already. They are now trying to rebuild and reload with all of their younger players but it is a process that takes time

Dermontti Dawson or Mike Webster?
Rod Woodson or Mel Blount?

Dawson and Blount

Hi Paul, appreciate your chats and opinion on Steelers backup RB's that will make the roster?  I say get rid of Snell and McFarland, no potential or production likely from those two.  I like the pickup of Master Teague from Ohio State, good size and Big Ten experience to backup Najee.  Keep one of the two other rookies and look for an experienced veteran that can catch out of the backfield.  Your thoughts.  Thanks.
Zeise
12:27
I really think that Snell is the backup but right now they have a bunch of guys out. So Saturday I think the only ones available will be McFarland, Warren and Teague

Other than admitting a MISTAKE, wouldn't it be wise to cut strings with Dev Bush?  His speed was his strength, & not sure that's even a plus for him any longer! He's undersized, can't tackle, can't cover, continuously outta position, & terrible at run defense-on his angles--He's not that good--He's right there with Jarvis Jones-
Zeise
12:28
No you can't cut a first round pick right with some upside still to be tapped into. He is still better than anyone you could fill his spot in the two deep with at this juncture

Hi Paul, can you tell Omar Khan not to drop both hands on the podium/table in front of the microphone every three seconds? That would be greeeeat, thanks.
Zeise
12:29
I will get right on it.

Do the Steelers make a serious run at trading for Roquan Smith??
Zeise
12:29
No

Paul, if the crystal ball tells you Malkin will have a completely  healthy year, do you feel the Pens made the right move?….or are the treads already worn out?
Zeise
12:31
I don't like the move and do not think they will ultimately be vindicated by signing him. I don't think he will stay healthy and I think he is on the down side of his career.

12:31
Who in your opinion is the better LG Dotson or Greene?
Zeise
12:32
Great question. Dotson is hurt right now so he is obviously falling behind. I would say that if Greene wins the job, which it looks like he might, that is not a good sign for the Steelers

Hey Paul.  From what I read, a long investigation proved the Dolphins and Ross were guilty of tampering.  It also indicated Flores' claims couldn't be validated.  Why is so much chatter saying Flores was 'vindicated' and the punishment was based on his lawsuit?  What am I missing here?  To me it seems like Flores like a fool for making false claims about very serious matters.
Zeise
12:36
No, the thing is part of what Flores alleged was that Ross was not doing business in good faith. And this investigation would seem to indicate that is actually the case. Obviously some of what Flores alleged has not been founded but I do think that Ross has proven himself to be quite the scumbag

Serena announced her upcoming retirement.  Is it safe to say she was the best and most dominate player in her generation and all time?  She has the titles and longevity.
Zeise
12:41
Of her generation, yes, but all time is a real tough one because there have been a lot of great players. But her grand slams and her overall titles put her definitely in that conversation

12:41
Paul, who do you feel “could” eventually be a #1 starter that is currently in the Pirates organization?
Zeise
12:42
I would hope Roansy Contreras. But I don't know if that guy is in the organization
Mercury
12:42
You said in your mailbag yesterday that Dotson will be the starter at LG.  Dulac said in his chat yesterday it would be Green. What are you two sage observers seeing differently?
Zeise
12:43
Well Dotson is hurt so Green will start this week and so the competition will continue through camp. It should have been won by Dotson by now but right now Green has the upper hand because he is healthy

Shouldn't the Steelers go after R. Smith in light of the fact that they have some nice offensive weapons that will not require large investments for about 4 years. Finish this defense while that reduced rate offensive window is available ?
Zeise
12:44
No. They might need the money to sign a quarterback next year!!
