I'm tired of hearing no answers from the Pirates mgmt team about increasing payroll. They give us the fans nothing. Why won't Bob Nutting at least spend 100 million? That's still way below avg but we could get a lot of better players year after year and then supplement that with our minor league system. Spending $50 million is a disgrace Paul!
Zeise
12:37
Well they aren’t going to spend money until they are ready to win. And that could be a few years. I think it is a cop out but that’s their stance on spending money. I expect the payroll to be about $60-$65 million again

What is up with this whole Amanda thing? She wanted you to apologize in the Steelers chat Sunday why? What did you do I am not understanding.
Zeise
12:39
She is a wacko who went all Karen on Rich Walsh and me about promoting drinking because there are beer taps on the set of the Nightly Sports Call. That’s the Cliff Notes version

If Pitt plays in the Peach Bowl will Narduzzi get extended? I think next year is a better indicator than this season when the ACC stinks and Pitt already lost to Western Michigan.
Zeise
12:40
They don’t need to extend him, he is already signed for a lot of years. And I agree they have every thing bouncing exactly right this season for them but 27 guys - including Kenny Pickett - graduate and the ACC will be less of a dumpster fire next year so that probably will be a better indicator

Hello Paul, Was Hayes projected to be a power hitter when the Pirates selected him?  He's a fine player, but if I have learned anything from recently watching MLB playoffs, the Buccos need mashers and plenty of them to field a winning, note I did not say competitive, baseball team.  Other than Reynolds, I don't know if there are any heavy hitters from which to build.
Zeise
12:41
I don’t think so. He was expected to be a great defensive player who hits for high average and has enough pop in his bat to maybe hit 15-20 HRs a year
Zedo
12:41
Paul, Does a bye week for the Steelers help or hurt them in your opinion?
Zeise
12:42
It helps them. They need to get healthy. They have a whole wing of a medical tent occupied with groin and hamstring injuries. Ben has a bad hip. A week off is exactly what they need
Ollie
12:42
Hey Paul, what do you make of your fellow radio talk show hosts  saying USC and LSU may be interested in hiring Tomlin?
Zeise
12:43
It wasn’t the talk show hosts that said it. It was Doug Whaley as a guest on their show. And all of the talk show hosts on the station agree it is beyond a pipe dream and ain’t gonna happen

Best baseball movie: Major League; basketball: Hoosiers; football: Paper Lion; hockey: Slap Shot; bowling: hmmmm, trying to think. Yours?
Zeise
12:45
Major League, White Men Can’T Jump, Varsity Blues, Strange Brew
Replay
12:45
Why don't professional leagues put a time limit, say 30 to 45 seconds, on how long to look at replays. No one enjoys 5 or more minute delays, even the broadcasters complain about them, and if you're looking to overturn obviously blown calls, 30 seconds gives you time to look at the play from two or three angles. You'll see obviously blown calls in that time. If you need to look at the play again the call's not obviously blown and should stand.
Zeise
12:48
I agree, absolutely. There should be a time limit. If you can’t tell in 20-30 seconds whether or not the call is wrong then it doesn’t need to be changed because it wasn’t egregious

Hi Paul, Najee Harris' running skills will sorely be under-utilized if the playbook is not revised to make best use of his talents.  So far, run plays called seem too often to be only up the middle.  No tackles/guards pulling, no runs around the end, no trap plays.  Also, two TE sets could be employed to open up the run game and provide more RPO options.  Need good old-fashioned Steelers run game.  Your thoughts.  Thank you very much!
Zeise
12:50
I think the playbook will be expanded once they feel comfortable with the offensive line. You can’t run a whole lot when your worried about your line

12:51
Odds the Steelers use a number one pick on a quarterback this year?
Zeise
12:52
I would say very low - this is not going to be a great year for quarterbacks. There just isn’t a great crop of guys to choose from
Jimmie
12:52
Based on the Steelers' performance so far, in the next draft which positions will be addressed in rounds 1,2,and 3?
Zeise
12:53
Probably need a D-lineman, quarterback in like the third round, maybe a corner
Donna
12:53
Hi Paul, have you heard if Banner is going to get any playing time against Cleveland?  Thanks.
Zeise
12:54
Have not but the chatter is he will step in at right tackle and move Chuks to swing tackle or perhaps if Moore can’t go, left tackle
JIM
12:54
Paul, I do not mean to come across as cruel but in Tuitt's case, OK, family member died, terrible, but seriously, how many of us could bail on our jobs for months and expect to come back when we feel like we are ready after a death? You make millions of dollars to play a game, man up and go to work or quit. Do they Steelers get to a point where having their guy's back becomes a demand to get back to work or face fines? He really needs to man up.
Zeise
12:55
My understanding is he still isn’t fully healthy from that knee injury and that’s why he is on injured reserve still
Old coaches
12:55
Did Kevin Stallings ever get all of his contract money from Pitt or did Pitt manage to show cause for not paying it all? I understand he's out of basketball now? Do you know if Pat Chambers is out of basketball too? My internet searches came up empty.
Zeise
12:56
Stallings settled for something less than they owed him but he got paid a big chunk of change. I don’t think either guy is coaching right now
Artemus
12:56
Hi Paul, what’s the story with Aaron Rodgers and the Bears?  Is it a rivalry thing or something personal?  Thanks.
Zeise
12:57
Packers-Bears is like Steelers-Ravens, so yes it is a bitter rivalry and Rodgers has owned them recently
Mercury
12:57
How does the NFL determine when teams have bye weeks? Some teams don’t have their bye this year until December 12 which seems awfully late.
Zeise
12:58
There is a formula based on every teams schedule and I don’t think there is a particular pattern for it

12:58
Remembering how heavily recruited and anticipated both players were, how strange is it that it turned out that BOTH Paris Ford and Lamont Wade are not playing on Sundays now?  Seemed like can't miss guys just a few years ago, Ford especially.
Zeise
12:59
There is a huge difference between being high school superstars and NFL players. Wade shocks me more than Ford just because Ford ran such a bad 40-time it is hard to recover from that
Ed
12:59
Paul, don’t know if you read Penny Hardaway’s comments on coaching in the latest SI but he essentially said the players run the program. Has college hoops strayed that far from the days of Dean, Knight and Coach K?
Zeise
1:02
Maybe they run Memphis program but I’ll tell you this - the most successful programs are run by the coach. This “athletes have found their voice” stuff is nonsense and the fantasies of the woke brigade. In life there are definitive roles of authoritarian figures and if we ever get to the point where we take that away we might as well just let the asteroid hit us and take us out. The best coaches are the ones who are clearly in charge
Greg

I moved away from Pittsburgh in 2000 so please help my confusion. Since when does anyone in the burg care about ANY kind of basketball. What a lame sport.
Zeise

Greg has some thoughts

Hi Paul, I think Wormley has been playing pretty well so far this season.  What’s your opinion of his play?
Zeise
1:03
I think he has certainly played well for who he is and what he is. I don’t think he is a world beater but he is serviceable and has made a few plays
