Last summer, I submitted a question to one of these P-G chats questioning whether expectations for Hayes might be a little overblown after his terrific few weeks in 2020. I was pretty much dismissed with, “he has so much potential”, etc.

What is your point now?

Hi Paul, is the Hayes signing more of a PR move than a commitment to building a WS-winning roster? They clearly needed a face of the franchise and they don't want to pay Reynolds, apparently.  It seems to me this helps to get the fans off their backs a little, with a minimum payout.  Maybe I'm just being overly cynical, but with the Pirates, I'm not sure that's possible.  Your thoughts? Thx!

It gives them control of a young potential superstar for a very cheap price. If he is who they think he is they got him for a steal

Coach K. Full of himself? or Great for the game?
Zeise

I haven’t heard him say he was coming back. That was speculation of a former player

Hi Paul, I heard Jason Capel tried to put his name in the transfer portal but his brother Jeff had to explain the portal is only for players. Paul, shouldn’t coaches be allowed to transfer, despite the fact your older brother is the head coach?
Zeise

I think most people would love him to transfer based on what I’ve read about him being the problem!! I don’t know that to be true but that is the story

Hi, Paul; I appreciate your chats!
Last summer, I posed a question to one of these P-G sports chats (can’t remember whose it was) questioning whether expectations were too high for Hayes after his terrific few weeks in the majors in 2020. I was pretty dismissed with, essentially, “but he has so much potential”, etc. There’s no disputing his excellent glove, but he was a .270’s hitter with 26 homers in six minor league seasons. Why should we expect much offensive production, especially to warrant such a big contract? Thank you for your time, and keep up the good work!

It is a good point but minor league stats don’t often tell the story of the major league production. I agree he may never become a dominant offensive player but he will be a very good player for them

Paul:  It is often said by both the local and national media that the Steelers are terrible at drafting CBs and should avoid doing so again. It is true that since 2015 they have used a top 3 pick on Golson, Burns, and Layne at CB and all were busts. But look at several other positions where the Steelers have made top 3 picks since 2015: Safety (Edmunds-disappointing, Davis-bust); ILB (Bush, 3 picks on him-bust), OL: (Okorafor-bust, Green-bust); QB (Rudolph, bust); Isn’t it more apt to say that the Steelers have been bad consistently using top picks at many positions?
Zeise
3:16
I think you can cherry pick if you want but the thing about defensive backs is it goes way beyond the last three picks. That’s important to note this history goes way beyond just the last few years

I apologize for my repetitive questions, but it took me a couple of tries before I realized that the return key on the app submitted the question instead of inserting a line feed. 😬

Hi Paul. I hope the Hayes signing turns out better than the last big one. Which I think was the Polanco $30 Million 2016 extension. And we know how that went & ended there. Wasn't more bang for your buck there. Here's hoping ......
Zeise
3:18
Ke’Bryan Hayes is an elite defender which makes him automatically better than Polanco. Polanco didn’t have a single elite level major league skill and Hayes does

Paul:  I get the argument that Colbert has been in the seat for the draft preparation, but given the abysmal drafting record that the team has had for the last 7-8 years, do you really think it is a good idea to give him one more draft especially if they are thinking about a QB for the future?
Zeise
3:20
You know how the Steelers do things - they don’t like change and they stand by guys who have had success for them

Paul: Which has a better chance of happening in the GM search: a) that they bring in a guy that will stand up to Tomlin in draft and free agency decision or b) that they focus primarily on bringing in a Tomlin Yes-man?
Zeise
3:21
It is going to be someone who works with Tomlin and understands that what Tomlin wants he will get
Dan
3:22
hi Paul - with the exception of QB, if the Steelers were fortunate enough to draft a player who turns out to be a bonafide all-pro, what position do you think that puck would be to best help this team - thx
Zeise
3:23
Left tackle? Or right tackle? Or center? You get the idea I think

Hey Paul. This time in New York City I lay off raw sushi. It got me last time here, miss game we lost.

Yeah let’s not do that again!!!

Paul, could the reason that the Steelers haven't looked at a veteran receiver like Cole Beasley be mostly political?  I can't believe that he wouldn't help upgrade our slot position. Sign him and we only need to draft one WR
Zeise
3:25
I doubt it. I think they are focused on trying to sign Diontae Johnson and then adding receivers through the draft. They made it clear they want to spend money on their line and their defense

Paul, thanks for the chats.  I'm a long time Pirate fan and I agree with the rebuild.  However, why do they sign these never have been or over the hill types with no/little upside.  Can't they at least sign one quality player?  Now that we have the DH you can always dumped someone there.  BTW, a decent pitcher would have been nice too!
Zeise
3:27
They are cheap options to backfill the roster for the year that’s all. They are just trying to find guys who have some experience that’s all

Is there an oddsmaker out there thinking the Pirates can win a series this season?  Pardon me if I cringe of the thought of AL East opponents in interleague play.
Zeise

The Pirates will win series this year. By odds they have to right

Every NFL pundit likes to predict the draft, but do you lean more toward selections picks from McShay or Kiper Jr.?
