How does the NHL compare to the rest of the 4 major leagues?

That's a big question.

My personal feeling is that the NHL will never become more than the regional sport it is. There can't be blanket coverage like the NFL, nor an ingrained cultural duty like the MLB.

That said, with the falling appetite for 4+ hour games, and a growing awareness of the dangers football can place on your body and mind (this coming from someone who played football growing up) there is an opportunity for the NHL to fill some of those gaps.

They need to be careful not to take all of the violence out--not talking about fighting, as it is somewhat of a sideshow that I think actually may hurt the optics of the league in many eyes--but embrace the speed and fitness the new generation is bringing to the game.

It's hard to measure, because of the increasing rates of second-screen watchers. But the league is financially stable and has solid in-roads around the world in non-traditional hockey countries.

The game in the US is growing at the grass roots level, and players like Auston Matthews only accelerate that.

How do you like the idea of removing the instigator penalty? In might reduce the amount of cheap shots as the offender will have to face the consequences.

I'm not sold it would. Offenders still have to "face the consequences" after every big hit, regardless of whether it's cheap or not.
You never see guys avoid going after people because of the instigator.

It's just that if Mitch Marner and William Nylander are your linemates, you probably have no one to stick up for you.

I like the way that the NHL has been attempting to grow in Europe. The Global Series is a nice event.
