Rasmussen is definitely not a plan B for Marleau.
He is a plan B for Nate Thompson, who went to Ottawa.

But, it does sound like they were going after Marleau just as hard but weren't willing to structure it like Toronto with the signing bonuses.
That could mean they still think they need another piece, and aren't done yet.

Either way that team is good enough for a long playoff run, meaning they could just wait for a trade opportunity

Saad for Panarin is a risky move.
I don't love it from either side really, but if he puts up an 80 point season in Columbus all is forgotten.

Buying out Hartnell was necessary for them, but they're going to miss him at some point this season. He still had game left.

If I were them I think I would move on from Ryan Murray, but there would have to be a talented forward coming back.

Right now? Something crazy. In the middle of another bad season by Detroit? Maybe not that much.
Still, you'd think it would have to take a fired Ken Holland to move a Detroit lifer like Z.

Would be a good player for Vancouver to target, give plenty of PP time and flip at the deadline.
They don't need to succeed this year, but they should be looking for players like that all over the league.
Signing Vanek is another one.

Why do the leafs want Marleau? Is it because his experience of not having won a cup means he will be a strong fit in the locker room? But seriously, JVR is better and could probably be extended for the same cap hit

JVR is definitely better, but Toronto talked a lot about Marleau's experience and professionalism when they brought him in.

Every time they mentioned him, Brian Boyle was also brought up. They loved the impact Boyle had on the team down the stretch and wanted to bring in another player like that (albeit with a little more skill)
