Marleau will almost certainly only play in Toronto for two years, since on July 2nd 2019 he'll have just $1.25MM left on his contract.  It's all bonuses.
5:48
They probably can't give JVR the term he wanted, with all the big names coming up.
All that said, I still don't think it was a very good fit for Toronto.

Do you think tere is any truth to the Hossa to Carolina talk?  Which Chicago prospect is likely to be included?
Gavin Lee
5:48
I think a lot of that comes out of the idea that every Chicago player ends up in Carolina.
5:49
But we'll see. Chicago doesn't have a ton of prospects that they can give up. Most of them are going to have to contribute to the NHL level soon (if not this season).

Watching many Wings games, Tatar might be a consistent goal scorer in terms of yearly totals but he goes from Ice Cold to On Fire to get there, with long stretches of diddly on the scoresheet.
Tatar turned down 5/$25 today, do you think that was a fair offer from the Wings?
And: Best guess as to the 1-year price for Tatar through arbitration?
Gavin Lee
5:50
Most scoring wingers can go through those streaks. It's hard to find consistency, especially when you're one of the top options on your team and seeing a lot of solid defense.
I think it was fair, but I don't blame Tatar for trying to maximize his next contract
5:51
If they don't want to give him seven years, he'll be a top name on the market next summe.r
He does have four straight seasons of 19 goals or more.
And would only be 27. That's a recipe for a long deal in free agency

Rangers send Staal (as part of a package) to Boston for Backes.  Exchange of high cost underperformers?  Difficult with no-trade hurdles, but I can wish can't I?
Gavin Lee
5:52
I'm not sure which side you're on to wish it. I assume you're a Rangers fan.
That would help them more than it helps Boston.
5:53
The Bruins aren't in a terrible situation cap wise.
5:54
They'll have to make some tough decisions, but that Marchand deal is so good that they can afford their big mistakes for now.

Any more moves for Kings, maybe a trade to shed some salary during camp?
Gavin Lee
5:54
I do think something is coming still for them. They can't go into the season with the same group and hope for better results.
5:55
Gaborik's injury complicates things though.

5:55
New owner good or bad for Carolina?
Gavin Lee
5:55
If it goes through, it can't be anything but good.
They're scraping the bottom of the barrel already. Nowhere to go but up.
Francis is doing a good job putting together a winner. If they can capitalize on new ownership and some corporate partners, they could turn it around.

Thanks for fielding the Holden question. If you think a bottom-six forward is too low, do you think Holden and a mid-rounder is a fair offer to
Boston for Spooner?
Gavin Lee
5:57
That's an interesting one. I'm not sure Spooner would solve what ails New York, but Holden would be a nice fit as a depth option in Boston.
5:58
I don't think you're that far off there. Will depend on how much Spooner gets in arbitration though.

Does Sam Steel break camp, or end up as their 3c at some point this year?  What about Jacob Larson as a regular dman?
Gavin Lee
5:59
Not much room for Larsson even with Theodore gone, but I think he's very very close to being ready.
I don't think Steel is ready though. He's going to be an impact guy for them, but he still has a bunch to learn in the AHL.

What are the Blues doing? They gonna do anything?
Gavin Lee

Turning Ryan Reaves into Klim Kostin isn't good enough?
Paul
6:01
I would argue that there is room. Vatanen is out because of injury, Lindholm may miss a couple games, and Holzer is best served as a 7th D-man.
Gavin Lee
6:02
We'll see how much Lindholm and Vatanen miss. The season is still three months away. But you're right, if both of those two can't start the year, Larsson could get a look.
Holzer is definitely best served as the 7th, but that's what a 7th is there for. To fill in when injury happens.

Any chance the Ducks go after someone like Vanek? Strong feeling they may consider making a top 6 move. I know Vanek isn't who he once was, but imagining him with Getzy could potentially be awesome. Pass first Getz with Vanek's scoring ways could be a cheap way to fill that top 6.
Gavin Lee
6:03
I suggested Vanek to the Ducks on the last chat I believe.
6:04
I think he could be useful for them yes.
Have to live with his problems though.
