What's wrong with an in-his-prime right handed top-4 defenseman making $4.8MM?
5:29
Oh, $4.875MM. But my point remains.
That's a fine number for Vatanen, even when Fowler's extension kicks in.
5:30
Remember that $4MM in Bieksa comes off the books next year.
It's hard to justify moving Vatanen as a salary dump. He'd need a really good "controllable, cheap left handed shooting forward"
Not easy to always make those deals.

The Golden Knights are allowing orders on jerseys now. Whose name should go on my jersey that will make it relevant for 5 years? Shea Theodore??
Gavin Lee
5:31
I'd go Nick Suzuki, but I have a ton of faith in him.
Maybe that's a 2018 purchase though.
Chase
5:31
CODY GLASS!
Gavin Lee
5:31
Another good option.
5:32
Erik Brannstrom is also a dynamite player, but more boom/bust than the first two.
Chase
5:32
I also didn't realize how much I was a Franson fan until right now lol
Gavin Lee
5:32
I dare you to get a Franson jersey.

Looking at the Central division, the Preds and Stars seem to have improved a lot and the Blackhawks seem to have subtracted some but are still very good. Should I be worried as a Wild fan?
Gavin Lee
5:33
Yes.
The Wild will be good again, but they're stretching that prospect cupboard mighty thin.
5:34
Losing valuable depth players like Erik Haula will hurt them.
And spending on Hanzal last year was a mistake.
Andrew
5:34
Do you think the Bruins are set at defense or need improvement?
Gavin Lee
5:35
I thought they'd go after one of the depth guys like Hainsey/Daley/Girardi, but with the prices they got on the open market it would have been a mistake.
I still think an addition like that would be helpful, but the improvement will come during the season as McAvoy and Carlo continue to get more comfortable.
There is a ton of upside on that defense group.
Confused Sens fan
5:35
Are we going to do anything to try improve our top 6 or top 4?
Gavin Lee
5:36
What, you're not excited about Nate Thompson?
Honestly there just isn't a ton of room in Ottawa right now without moving bodies out.
With White looking ready to contribute, the team has too many centers already and will have to use one of White/Dzingel/Pageau on the wing this year.
That should help in itself.
Ducks fan
5:37
Absolutely nothing! I love it, but I'm a little concerned about our payroll situation the following seasons. Vatanen is not well liked by Carlyle (he was benched at least once from my recollection during the season). I feel he would get a good return and help create badly needed offense on an already very solid defense team. Just how I see it, anyway.
Gavin Lee
5:38
I agree the Carlyle situation is a bit tricky, but I think it would be a mistake to sell him off for help now. If you can find a legitimate young piece sure, but offensive help is coming for this team in Sam Steel and Max Jones, among others.

Montreal has ~$9mil in cap space per capfreindly, Price increases +$4mil next year ($5mil space) and Plekanec comes off (-$6mil) giving them about $11mil to play with, is their some move that they are going to make, feels like they need a Top 4 puck mover(Lefty) and some definitive answer to a Top 6 center?
Gavin Lee
5:39
Top 4 LHD like...
...Markov?
Robert
5:40
That's assuming any combo of Danault, Galchenyuk, and Drouin can't completely fill the top 6 center rolls, but i feel like they need that 2nd pair lefty puck mover
Probably but maybe something younger? (Than Markov)
Gavin Lee
5:40
They do, you're right.
That defense group is going to be one of the most immobile groups in the league going forward.
I don't really know what they were thinking giving Alzner five years.
Chase
5:41
Glass seems like the type of kid any organization wouldve loved to have. I think Vegas hit gold mines with him and Suzuki
and Brannstrom too lol
