It would almost entirely remain on the cap if you tried to buy him out.
5:48
Russell's is a little better but isn't nearly as painful.
5:50
Honestly Edmonton is going to have a tough time surrounding McDavid with enough talent.
5:51
Thing is he might be good enough to do it on his own.
5:53
My biggest worry for Edmonton, is what do they do with Benning and Nurse next year? They already have four defensemen earning at least $4MM, and both of the young guys are RFAs.
Even bridge deals come with a raise.

The problem is then after that year Puljujarvi and Talbot need new deals, Talbot might not be cheap since he would be a UFA and if Puljujarvi plays with McDavid... that could be a lot of money.
Gavin Lee
5:57
Yep. And since they should be drafting at the back end of the first almost every year McDavid plays, it'll be tough to rebuild through the draft.
5:58
Missing on three late firsts in a row is really easy to do.
5:59
It's not all doom and gloom for them, but they sure haven't set themselves up perfectly.

So if we assume on paper that Dallas is a much better team and climbs into the top end of the West, which playoff team do you see falling out?  Personally, my money is on Minny, if only because the big competitors in their division has gotten a lot better.
Gavin Lee
6:02
Minnesota is definitely a team that could fall down, as are San Jose and Anaheim depending on the play of some key guys.
6:03
It's not just Dallas coming though, the Jets should be improved too
Robert
6:03
In Tampa would you put Stamkos and Kucherov together on a line or would you split them up?
Gavin Lee
6:03
I'd put them together.
Kucherov has spoken about how much he liked it in the short time they played together.
6:04
But obviously you'd just try it and see what happens. I might change my mind immediately.

So what's your opinion on Markov officially not going back to Montreal?  A lot of the media up here seems to think it's a big loss but I think it's being a tad overblown
Gavin Lee
6:04
It's a big loss as a franchise cornerstone, but it's  not like he was going to play a huge role in their future.
He was their best puck moving defender though.
6:05
That mantle now falls to...Jeff Petry?
Maybe even Schlemko.
I think that Montreal has made a mess of this offseason, and the Markov decision is just icing on the disappointing cake.
Xyrak
6:06
I agree Montreal is in a real rough spot - how they expect to put up any points in front of Price is beyond me
Gavin Lee
6:06
I also can't imagine Karl Alzner logging 25 minutes against Matthews-Nylander, Stamkos-Kucherov or Bergeron-Marchand.

There are rumblings from GMBM's Season Ticket Holder Event that Corey Perry played through a sprained MCL. Do you believe this might be true and why he had a down year?
Gavin Lee
6:07
I hadn't heard it myself, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was playing through something.
6:08
That said, I think you can point directly at his shooting percentage for his down year.
I have a hard time believing that he completely lost his accuracy and power, and he was still taking just as many shots.
Robert
6:09
The Islanders are a fringe team, what do you think they do in their near future?
And their(NYI) division is probably the best right now.
Gavin Lee
6:09
They are going to make a play for another big name, they just have to
The assets they got in the Hamonic deal don't do anything for them if they can't keep Tavares and a fan base interested.
6:10
That move might not be until partway through the season, but it just seems inevitable.
Robert
6:10
Where do they go? Duchene?
Gavin Lee
6:10
They've tried, a bunch already.
They might have to pivot somewhere else, like a James Neal or Evander Kane depending on how the season goes.
Xyrak
6:11
Any thoughts on where Vegas might be sending this surplus of defencemen they are still sitting on?  I know there teams out there that can still use the depth but cap space is running tight for a lot of the contenders
Gavin Lee
6:11
The other day they came out and said they were happy with how many they had right now. Which to me, is just mind boggling. It has to be them trying to create a market.
I'm just not sure how many of them have much interest in the summer.
