There was some wild speculation that the Maple Leafs will go hard after him next year after some money comes off the books, but I don't buy it. I think he retires in SJ now that he went back.
Year by year is the only way to do it at this point.

Do the Caps basically have to trade Grubauer to fill out a roster if they want players like Vrana on their roster? If so what teams might be interested?

So I did a piece the other day on how close the Caps are to the..err..cap, and Grubauer still seems like the likely piece that moves.
I believe in Phoenix Copley as an NHL backup

For Butcher like I said above winning is a huge part of where he'll end up.
The minutes right away don't seem as important, and he'll have to take an ELC wherever he goes.
For Franson, like most teams they likely just don't want to pay him what he thinks he's worth.

There might not be a more divisive player in the league. Some think he can barely skate, while others think he's an underrated asset.

I saw the article about captains earlier on PHR. Is it possible the Knights go without a captain as there is no clear choice? James Neal could be an option but he could also be gone in 6 months. Other than that they don't have any obvious choice. Do they wait for a youngster to come along and earn it?

I suggested that idea in the piece, and it would likely be my decision.
There is going to be so much roster turnover for the Knights in the next two years that naming a captain seems silly.

Follow up on the Vegas center Q: wouldn't it make sense to move one or two now and fill out their roster with some cheap vets (Winnik, Stafford etc) who can maybe get flipped at the deadline as well? thanks!

It's not a bad plan, but if they think the package for a guy like Karlsson or Lindberg could be bigger at the deadline than now they would probably go with that.
No guarantee Winnik/Stafford would get you much more than a 4th.

looks like habs signed jakub Jerabek to replace markov, left shooting supposed to have good first pass, pp type with high hockey iq. Think it works out if not what else do they do

I talked about Jerabek up there, and I'm totally not convinced on his ability at the NHL level.
I might be wrong, but I think he'll be a very poor replacement for Markov.

Would James Van Riemsdyk be an option for the Blackhawks after putting Hossa on LTIR? There was talk about him being traded to Chicago last season to be Toews' power forward but the team filled that with Saad. JVR with Kane/Anisimov on the second line and Schmaltz with Sharp and Hartman on the third line would be some serious depth and would allow Debrincat to take his time developing.

He would be a monster on that team, but I'm not sure how the two sides would match.

Chicago loves pushing right up to the cap, and the Hossa LTIR will give them some room but it's not like Toronto is going to trade him on the first day of the season.
They could use summer LTI, but I doubt they want to.
The Maple Leafs need defense if they're moving JVR, and there isn't much to write home about for young defensemen in the Hawks system.

In all honesty Mueller might be the best they get this summer.

He could break out, but it looks like Severson will be the only real top-4 again this year. Moore is respectable, and Greene has his moments, but I'm not sure where you can go out and get upgrades right now.
