HELLO We're back.
6:01
PHR live chats are officially back on the schedule for every Thursday evening!
I've missed these a lot over the last ten or so months (or however long it's been, time is a figment) so I'm excited to start again.
6:02
Fire in some questions and we'll get started in a few minutes.

Hi, never commented here before - just wanted to say this is a great site. I migrated here after a few years bouncing around different nhl sites and this is the best one I've found. Cheers for the awesome service :-)

I do have a question that is a bit left field - what do you think the timetable is on the Devils becoming a perennial playoff threat? It's been almost 10 years of rebuilding (getting screwed by Parise and Kovy set them back soooo long) but seems like there is some hope brewing now...

Thanks in advance.
Gavin Lee
6:12
Let's start with this one since it's so flattering
6:13
The Devils certainly have some great pieces, but their rebuild isn't going quite as smoothly as some of the others.
6:14
The Hall trade, for instance, was probably a little late and a little light to really turbo boost that rebuild. What you've seen from others, like the Senators and Rangers, is that they got out on players earlier and really cashed in when they knew it wasn't going well.
Still, that doesn't mean New Jersey can't get there.
6:15
Jack Hughes is still an elite prospect after a disappointing year, people shouldn't give up on him. He was always going to take a little bit longer than some of the more physically mature top picks.
Nico Hischier is a solid building block and guys like Ty Smith should make the team more competitive quickly.
6:16
Perennial playoff threat? That's probably still two years away, and only if they make the right moves now. In my mind, that likely even means selling on players like Damon Severson, as big of a fan as I am of his.

Where do you think Dubois ends up?
Gavin Lee
6:17
As a fan of chaos, I hope Montreal if only to see the complete overreaction from both fan bases.
But I think in the end he might end up on the west coast, California specifically
John
6:18
Did Torts hurt Colombus with his candid comments? It almost feels like he in a way forced a scenario where Dubois will be traded
Gavin Lee
6:18
I think Torts knows that Dubois is going to be traded no matter what he does, and he thinks this is the best way to get an elite player for the time being.
That old saying about the carrot and the stick? He has always chosen the stick for PLD.

If Mike Hoffman does well this season do you think the Blues would extend him, or does he cash in on a FA contract?
Gavin Lee
6:19
They'll certainly have a chance to keep him, I believe that's already been discussed.
But that front office is also ruthless and will not overpay when they feel like there are better options.
6:20
I'm not sure they'll be there in the end, if he has a good year.

Bruins top of the standings? Stanley cup chance again?
Gavin Lee
6:20
They are still an excellent team, but there are a lot of good ones in that East division.
6:21
There is a little bit of me that is worried the bottom might fall out if Bergeron takes any sort of step back.
Pastrnak skating was a good sign.

Odds i saw on the NBCSN broadcast last night actually had the Flyers a little far down on Cup odds. Are they really less likely then WSH and PIT?
Gavin Lee
6:22
One thing to point out is that odds are partially dictated by the betting public, or at least the perceived public for opening odds.
Until Philly actually does it, they'll probably lag behind in those preseason things
Mike
6:23
happy to see Patrick come back.
Gavin Lee
6:23
On the Flyers note, one of the best stories of the early season is seeing Patrick and Lindblom on the ice together.

Big Stuetzle fan. Who is the better pro in 5 years from that draft class not named Lafreniere
Gavin Lee
6:24
I'm a fan too, but there has been a HUGE overreaction on Byfield already.
6:25
Who knows what the next five years will bring really, but Byfield is a legitimate elite prospect still.
6:26
From the whole draft class, I still love Jamie Drysdale.

Nashville to regress or improve?
Gavin Lee
6:27
I'll be honest, I haven't really understood the plan in Nashville for the past few years.
There are a lot of winnable games for them in that division though, so they probably have a strong season.

Keep hearing questions about the Avs goaltending. If Grubauer can’t stay healthy who might they go after? I wonder about Gibson
Gavin Lee
6:29
That would be a big swing.
