The only reason I hesitate on something like this is that, can you really be a frontrunner if your offer/discussions haven't resulted in a trade yet?
6:21
The Coyotes are willing to trade Chychrun for the right package
It would have happened already if the Kings had offered what they want
So are they interested? Yes. Are they the front-runner? Only until someone else gets closer, I'd say
Go Kings Go!
6:21
Should the Kings just hold steady at the deadline knowing their deep prospect pool and unlikely cup chances? Next 1-2 years should be different!
Gavin Lee
6:22
On the same note, I think if they can make a move to get a player like Chychrun, they should
Those prospects are great, but at least some of them are probably at or near their peak in value right now. Not everyone will develop well
6:23
If you feel confident in your assessment of them, make the move and get a player who has a chance to provide a ton of excess value on the rest of his current deal.
6:24
I talk about surplus value a lot in these chats. And that's why I've been so bullish on teams going after Chychrun. This isn't like the Drouin situation--where you're getting a young player only to immediately pay him what he'd probably get on the open market. That limited any potential excess value you could get (and turned out not that great for Montreal).

Chychrun very well could outperform a $4.6MM cap hit by what, $3MM? $4MM? I think it's entirely reasonable to think that in two years, he'd be in the same tier as players like Darnell Nurse and Seth Jones. So that's $5MM in excess value--not even including any potential salary cap rise by that point.
6:25
Sure, the prospects you send out could similarly provide value like that, but I think the risk of that is higher than of Chychrun, if put in a good situation

6:26
What would you think of the Avs adding Jordan Staal as a 4th line guy with lots of playoff experience?
Gavin Lee
6:26
I think that kind of addition would be huge, I just don't think the Hurricanes would remove him from that room at this point

6:26
Are we going to be sellers and what can we get in return
Gavin Lee
6:26
I don't think it's going to be a fire sale by any means
6:27
But someone like Domi (who I think was mentioned earlier and I skipped it) could certainly bring back something, especially with some salary retention
I wonder about Gavrikov, as some of the team's younger defensemen start to take a step
6:28
I don't hear him discussed much when it comes to the deadline, but he's a player that I would be chasing over someone like Ben Chiarot, for instance.
An extra year, only $2.8MM.
The Blue Jackets would want a bunch, but he's a better player than many of the rentals, and his contract makes him very valuable for contenders

6:29
Gavin, how bad is the Knights salary cap position? Will Stone and Martinez be ready before the playoffs and if so how do they become cap compliant?
Gavin Lee
6:29
No one really knows about Stone, I think they're just taking it very slow.
6:30
The one thing about it is that I think fans believe there is a lot more panic than the Golden Knights actually feel.
Remember they've already had discussions with every GM in the league. They know what their players are worth, and who would be interested if they needed to create some room.
6:31
If there's one front office in the league that you believe can juggle a bunch of things and make sure they don't get screwed at the end, isn't it the group that played the expansion draft so perfectly?
Sure, they might have to make a trade if it looks like Stone is going to be back. But I bet they get nice full value on whoever they're sending out
Ken
6:32
i believe you can never have too much size and D for the playoffs, which D could the Avs be looking at cob
Gavin Lee
6:32
I do wonder if this decision will come down to Byram, who is skating again.
If you think there is a chance he will be ready for the playoffs, and can be relied on, you probably don't need to make an addition
6:33
If he's not an option, then maybe someone needs to come in. They can't dress Kurtis MacDermid in the playoffs
6:34
But I do think that they are looking more at forward than defense
Brian
6:34
If Stone and Martinez come back for game 1 of the playoffs and do not have to shed salary are they going to look at the ltir rules in the next cba? Tampa last year Vegas this year, it’s not a plot at all to have your best players on the ltir but it is also kinda fishy how teams are using it.
Gavin Lee
6:35
I don't think anyone other than fans (and maybe the small market teams) have a big problem with it
I don't think it's a big thing, though just the salary cap overall will be discussed when the next CBA stuff comes up.
6:36
The flat cap and the huge escrow repayments have opened some eyes, I think, on the players side.
Not saying that the cap is going anywhere, it's not, but there will be amendments, I think.

6:36
Do you see any lower ranked team making a big playoff run like Montreal did last year
Gavin Lee
6:37
It can always happen, but the teams that are currently in the wild card spots don't strike me as real Cup contenders
Although Montreal obviously didn't either
6:38
Nashville is coming back to earth a bit after that insane streak where they were winning even with a roster that didn't look that imposing
Edmonton still has such dysfunction that you can't trust them.
