What the heck are the Caps thinking with this deal? I like Mantha, A LOT, but it seems like a massive overpay
Gavin Lee
6:45
So I can't remember who said it, maybe Marc Bergevin about Josh Anderson, but there is a belief out there that if you can find a monster who can score, you go after it, almost no matter the cost.
The guys who are bigger than everyone else and also have the skill to put the puck in the net are EXTREMELY valuable in the eyes of executives around the league
6:46
I think the Capitals are convinced, like Montreal was with Anderson, that they can unlock even more in Mantha
6:47
I think the thing that was probably talked about in the room was "Are we better or worse tomorrow with Mantha/Raffl over Vrana/Panik?"
And I do think the answer is Mantha/Raffl
Sure, using those assets for something else could have resulted in an even BETTER team, but that's not a guarantee and this was the deal available
I can kind of understand it, even if it does seem lopsided
6:48
Vrana wasn't playing up to the level they wanted and a first isn't anything for them today
Rob
6:48
% chance Dumba is traded before the expansion draft
Gavin Lee
6:48
Mmm, I'll put it at 40%
Don't think it's necessarily a lock
Rob

Who is the best FA center available this off season?
Gavin Lee
6:49
Does RNH count as a center anymore?
6:50
Andrew Copp can play center and is having a huge year
Oh Copp is still an RFA for one year
6:51
Boy it's thin! Probably why you asked the question
Oh, Phil Danault should be up there
Krejci/Stastny for the older crowd

I hear what you’re saying about Was, but this looks like a team that is an Ovi retirement away from a long, painful, rebuild and these deals look to make that even worse.
Gavin Lee
6:52
I think the one thing to learn from the last few years is that rebuild don't necessarily need to be that long.
The Caps are going for it right now
When they decide that's impossible, they won't be regretting a pick in the late-20s so much
6:53
They'll be embracing the new picks in the top-15

I've been surprised at the fall of Aatu Raty from presumptive #1 overall pick to a guy rated in the teens on a lot of lists. Could this be a case of scouting fatigue on a guy we've heard about for several years or are you buying the concerns with his game over the last year?
Gavin Lee
6:54
I think the thing with Raty is that it's not so much his game has declined, it just hasn't improved in the ways that people expected. Or at least at the rate people expected
It's not just scouting fatigue though, remember that he was left off the WJC team this year
That's not scouts, that's the people who are working with him
6:55
I think maybe a comparison could be made with Timothy Liljegren, who was dubbed the next Erik Karlsson long before his draft. But then dealt with illness and injury that stalled his development, never took that next step and fell down the board
6:56
At one point he was supposed to be in the conversation with Patrick at the very top
Imagine if someone had taken Liljegren ahead of Cale Makar--who was a late riser
6:57
Sometimes that early production isn't weighed as heavily as the months just before the draft
Rob
6:57
Is Nolan Patrick considered a bust yet?
Gavin Lee
6:57
Speaking of Patrick
I still don't want to call a 22 year old a bust
But it's been a tough, tough year
6:58
Missing an entire season when you're that young has huge consequences
and Patrick has almost done it twice, with his junior injuries as well

Who is the first coach chopped and first gm chopped after the season is over
Gavin Lee

I'll go with Dallas Eakins
