Hello and welcome to another chat!
This is the last pre-playoffs chat, I can't wait to watch some postseason hockey
I'll let some stuff roll in and get started in a few minutes

Would it be legal for a team to expose a player with a large cap hit, have Seattle select them, and then trade them back to the original team for a huge package while retaining salary to help the original team with the cap? Asking for a friend.
Gavin Lee
6:13
Haha, that's an interesting idea. I don't believe there is anything blocking it..I think the only restriction on a retained player is that the team retaining the salary can't reacquire for a year...
6:14
Can you trade back for a player selected in the draft? That's one I can't immediately remember
6:15
You may be onto something
6:16
And if there is a front office who would be willing to bend the rules, the Avalanche would be up there. Remember they're the team that traded for Orpik just to buy him out, so the Capitals could re-sign him to a cheaper deal.
Interesting idea!

I know the NHL doesn't have a "breakout player" or "most improved player" award. However, if it did, other than Devon Toews, who would be top 5?
Gavin Lee
6:16
You username seems to hint at one of the others
6:17
His teammate Mackenzie Weegar could easily be another
6:19
How about Colin Blackwell, from New York
Would be a fun list to make!
Pawtucket

Why is the NHL making the Canucks and Flames finish off the season?
Gavin Lee
6:20
There are a lot of contracts that go into an NHL game
I assume they have obligations to their sponsors/broadcasters that they need to fill

All this talk about the Sabres blowing things up. Are GMs and coaches tradeable? Because that seems like the only way that franchise is going to make any gains! Also, we keep hearing the same names recycled about regarding coaching candidates for the open spots. Who are some people that have never been headcoach who could/should be getting their shot this offseason?
Gavin Lee
6:21
They are not exactly tradeable, as in you cannot give up an asset for them anymore.
6:22
But, one team could "relieve of duties" then another could pick up the rest of the contract/renegotiate
Would just be a money transaction though, the days of draft pick compensation for hiring a coach/executive are over

Who should be more worried? Tampa due to the various injuries and unsure recoveries or Florida at the prospect of a healthy Tampa team which gets Kucherov and Stamkos back among others?
Gavin Lee
6:22
I don't think the recoveries are all that unsure, to be honest.
6:23
I think Florida should certainly be cautious that this isn't the Tampa team that has played all season.
But the Panthers are a good team!

6:24
Do you think the devils make some free agent moves or will make trades instead
Gavin Lee
6:24
Both, probably
I think the first question is who will be their GM
6:25
Fitzgerald is still with the club and remains committed, but his contract for the GM job was for just this season and it hasn't yet been extended (though apparently they have worked on it)
He has that team in a pretty good spot though
6:26
No bad money long term, lots of youth
Another year with multiple first round picks
John
6:26
whats the latest on kuzy and Sammy for the playoffs?
Gavin Lee
6:26
They are still in the protocol
Can't practice with the team, can't play until they get off it.
Today was day 10. Tomorrow is an important one to watch
6:27
but even if they're cleared, hard to expect Samsonov to play in G1 at least.
Joey
6:27
Worst 3 GMs in the NHL right now
Gavin Lee
6:27
Haha, I don't think that's really a fair one to answer. There is a lot more to the GM job than just the trades/signings we see
A LOT more
