(that said, stop giving fourth line players multi-year deals)
John

Where do you see torts next year?
Gavin Lee
6:29
Someone suggested Buffalo last week, it's a hilarious thought
I don't think he wins back the Rangers job. They're interviewing Gallant too and I just think they'll go in a different direction
6:31
You have to think that someone like the Coyotes would be interested
A return to Vancouver seems unlikely
Jeff Carter
6:32
What is in the water in Pittsburgh? Also, what are the odds Carts plays next season?
Gavin Lee
6:32
I think the odds he plays are high
6:33
Especially after how well it has gone so far
Rock the Red
6:33
Does Kuzy, Samsanov, our 1st and one of our D prospects get the Caps in the door for Eichel?
Gavin Lee
6:34
Certainly interesting. Many believe the Sabres need to get a top player back, not just futures.
Kuznetsov has shown an ability to play at a very, very high level obviously
6:35
They would be pretty squeezed though. A report the other day said they are budgeting $11M for Ovechkin, I think
Joey

Your Stanley Cup winner?
Gavin Lee
6:36
I'll say whoever comes out of the West

What do you think of "point shares" as a stat? Obviously it is overly reductionist, but for a way to compare everyone, does it do a decent job? Also, if there a stat like that that is any good, is you think PS is complete garbage.
Gavin Lee
6:38
I'll be honest I am not entirely familiar with the methodology in point shares
I think the idea behind it is the same as win shares though right? It's a cumulative stat
6:39
Trying to put everything together and add up all contributions
6:40
If I'm right about that, I would lean towards Evolving-Hockey's GAR model (goals above replacement), but I can't actually say if the methodology is better than hrefs'.
6:43
The thing about those stats to remember though, as the creators will openly point out, is that in hockey they will vary much more from the actual production in a small sample, because of how many variables are in a hockey game.
6:44
You can't just take one player's GAR from a 50-game stretch and assume that's his true talent
Even a full season, things can change so rapidly in hockey and the actual events are so interdependent that it takes a much wider look to really know what the player is.

Does Toronto make it out of the first round?
Gavin Lee
6:46
I have a hard time seeing Montreal winning that series, though getting a healthy Gallagher back is probably a bigger deal than many seem to think
6:47
Sometimes it isn't obvious when he is taking over a game, because he doesn't do it in the same way as so many other stars
6:48
I just think Toronto is a much more talented team, top to bottom. By that I mean, if you just stack the players up, almost every slot leans Toronto's way. Their best forward is better than Montreal's best forward. Their 5th forward is better than Montreal's 5th forward.
That said--Carey Price has done crazy things before, and Toronto's goalies are the opposite of proven
So who knows
Bailey
6:49
Is Drew Doughty good again?
Gavin Lee
6:49
The same thing that makes all-encompassing hockey stats difficult, also affects your "eye-test"
6:50
Sometimes on a bad team, good players are put in horrible situations over and over and over without any help
So they look like they're getting caved in
But take a little pressure off, give them a teammate in the right spot, and things can start to turn
Doughty was probably never as bad as he was performing, on a true talent basis
He's also not the same player he was 5-6 years ago
6:51
And his play this year doesn't make his contract any easier to swallow
He was on just the second season of an eight year deal. Think about that!

6:52
Has there ever been consideration of pro-rating fines to the player's salary? It is more than a little ridiculous that the same fine is so proportionately different from one player to another.
Gavin Lee
6:52
Haha, I always laugh when I hear this discussion on sports radio or something. The fact is the fines are based on salary, they are just capped at $5,000
