It's probably a combination of a lot of things, including Kekalainen's unwillingness (or financial inability) to really go after those big free agent names
He prefers to go through trade, which has worked out to get big names in, but hasn't resulted in much overall success

Isn't the play for Hextall and Burke just to ride it one more year with the "core"? With a flat cap and two franchise players (Malkin and Letang) only having a year left on their deals why not just see what happens next year and move on from there?
Gavin Lee
6:39
Yes I don't think they blow up the three necessarily, but I do think they'll at least explore it

It seems to be a given that when the Sabres trade Eichel, they will command a king's (no pun intended) ransom in return.  Does he really make the players and team around him that much better, or is everyone just in love with his stats and that potential?  He's not cheap and any team that is going to build around him needs the same assets to fit him in that the Sabres would want back.
Gavin Lee
6:40
There will be a lot of teams who believe he can put them over the top
6:41
He does make his teammates better, they just have been coming from a very low baseline in Buffalo
I don't think he will go to a real contender though, more of a team on the bubble of the playoffs with a lot of young talent

Lonely Coyotes fan...what is going to happen? I like the idea Eischel coming here...maybe for Keller?
Gavin Lee
6:42
Well certainly not straight up
6:43
I know Keller had a good year, but he hasn't been nearly consistent enough so far in his career to be at that level
I also think that would be a horrible mistake for the Sabres
I've talked about it before on here, the NHL is an excess-value league. You need to bring in players that are giving you more than you're paying them. Keller is already being paid like a star, and doesn't always perform like one
6:44
An Eichel trade needs to be weighted in the Sabres favor for potential value in order for a deal to make sense
6:45
Like including Byfield, for instance. The Sabres could get huge excess value out of that player, while the Kings get a proven top-line player being paid like one to help them get to the playoffs
Trading Eichel for a player who is already gotten the big check doesn't make a lot of sense when the rest of the roster is so poorly constructed

Team most likely to sustain this seasons success and team most likely to flop and miss the playoffs all together?
Gavin Lee
6:47
Sustain success: Carolina, Florida, Toronto, Colorado
Flop and miss: Boston, Montreal, Minnesota, Washington
(this is the worst guess-work I've ever been asked to do haha)
6:48
You should all place bets on the opposite things happening

Assuming health is good, can rossi slide in a top 6 role next year? Or is he used as bait for a Rossi or monahan?
Gavin Lee
6:49
I don't think he'll be used as bait, no
There are too many complicating factors for that
But asking him to slide directly into the top-six is also probably wishing too much

Which goalie gets traded ?? Korpi or Elvis
Gavin Lee
6:51
I think more likely is Merzlikins actually
But not sure
Tristan Jarry’s Therapist
6:53
Who realistically can the Penguins unload in terms of contracts and any guesses on who is likely to be lost to the Seattle Kraken on the expansion draft? (And I don’t see Jarry going anywhere either, or at least right away. Besides, who’d take him AND his cap hit right now?)
Gavin Lee
6:53
The Pittsburgh expansion situation is one of the most interesting in the league
6:54
There are probably moves coming before the draft
But I wonder if Jason Zucker is the starting left winger for Seattle when things open up next season
6:56
In terms of Jarry, I don't know what they'll do, but I know you have a couple of executives who just watched their team go down because of him
MikeDickinson
6:56
I think Slavin is a top 5 defenseman in the league and Pesce is a top 15. Agree?
Gavin Lee
6:57
Both are probably right on the cusp of that spot--Pesce probably a little further down
But they are both outstanding
6:58
Not every team in the league has a defenseman as good as Brett Pesce, and the Hurricanes have 3 of them.
Gary Bettman
6:58
Why am I so stingy with the salary cap? Or is there some validity to not raising it that much?
Gavin Lee
6:58
It's not Bettman, the cap is based on revenue
When revenue goes up, the cap goes up accordingly
6:59
The players get 50% of the league's revenue
