Gavin Lee

He was basically they only chip they had to get out of Ekman-Larsson's contract
6:26
Plus, for a team that's not going to be competitive the next couple of seasons, his real value would have been gone
He might be worth $5M on the open market--but as I've said time and again here, it's all about excess value in the NHL.
6:27
He's a great player, but how much real value is he providing over say, Brandon Saad or Tomas Tatar, both who came in cheaper in free agency
You can like Garland more than both players (I do), but note that it's still not a huge win for the Canucks

Everyone in Vegas believes the team did wrong by Fleury, but was it really that bad? They had told him they were in discussions with Chicago a few days prior and its not that weird for a team to not tell the player they've been traded until the trade call is finalized. Also, little iffy considering it was Allan Walsh who said they found out over twitter
Gavin Lee
6:29
It wasn't just Walsh, it was Fleury too--though again, he actually said he found out through Walsh, who found out through Twitter
It's very messy and honestly it doesn't matter that much. Trading him is the part that people are upset about
6:30
I'm all for sentimentality in sports, but the Golden Knights have been all business from the start, and they've won.
When they stop winning, maybe that stuff will matter to free agents, but right now it's just a little blown out of proportion
6:31
For the most part, players are professionals and understand they could be moved at anytime

Regarding Rossi read he will be participating in Austria qualifications for the Olympics this month. So if Minny send him back to Europe, he plays in Europe and the Olympics, does his entry level slide again? They will need his full three years starting next year with all that dead cap
Gavin Lee
6:31
Yep, as I noted in our story on it, his contract can slide again if he doesn't play in the NHL
fish fry
6:32
Are the Kraken going to get the deal done with Phillip Grubauer?
Gavin Lee
6:33
I'm not sure of the specifics of the contract submission, but Grubauer is listed on the Kraken roster on the internal NHL media database, so yes, I don't think there's anything to worry about

Am I the only one that was puzzled that Vegas picked up dadanov and basically blew all the cap space they saved by giving away fleury? I don’t get it. Am I missing something?
Gavin Lee
6:34
I still think a Reilly Smith trade might be coming, but it's complete speculation.
John
6:36
What Is Minny you going to do with all that cap space this year? Besides Kaprizov and Fiala. Goligoski at 5 mil?
Gavin Lee
6:36
I'm not sure what you're asking about Goligoski
His deal has a handshake agreement for next year which will be at a much lower cost, but they couldn't average the AAV over two years
6:37
So, if say he signs again for $2M next year, it was better this way with the extra cap than the $3.5 that a two year, $7M deal would do
In terms of the cap space this year
Kaprizov is going to take a huge bite out of it
6:38
Remember you don't need to spend it all at the beginning
If you start the year with cap space, it accrues during the year

6:39
What free agent contracts signed this FA period do you think teams will regret a couple years down the road?
Gavin Lee
6:39
Goodrow, Coleman, Hyman
6:40
Schwartz, McCabe, Danault all have a chance to be bad
Rod Brind'Amour's Abs
6:41
With all the knick-knack signings Carolina has done recently, is it possible they're trying to put together a big package deal with some of these guys? I don't understand signing 7 AHL'ers to entry contracts that'll probably never see the ice.
Gavin Lee
6:41
It doesn't really work like that in real life
Teams can't take on 5 contracts for 1 player, at least not usually (I do remember one with Michael Grabner a few years ago)
6:42
Remember the AHL needs bodies too though
Signing minor league players shouldn't be an upsetting thing
Alan
6:42
I would like to see the goaltenders be able to play the puck anywhere behind the net what do you think?
Gavin Lee
6:42
Yeah, I'd take away the trapezoid too
Gary
6:43
The Kraken can't keep all of Soucy, Fleury, Lauzon, Cholowski and Borgen. Which of their defensemen do you think they end up trading before the season starts?
Gavin Lee
6:43
It's not even limited to those guys, I mean they have 11 defensemen once they sign the three RFAs, and all of them need waivers
6:44
I still think Dunn is probably a likely target for a lot of teams, but since he filed for arbitration it's unlikely you'll see a trade until a contract is worked out
6:45
Teams hate hate acquiring players just before an arbitration hearing
His is scheduled on the 14th
