Gavin Lee
6:45
I don't think he's a bad player or anything, but what path is that?
6:46
If you want to win in the next three years, which is what that signing suggests, why turn down some of the other contracts that were available
Deven Paul
6:47
Follow up, if Jarry falters, which I agree and am also worried about who’s the Pens goalie in 2022?
Gavin Lee
6:47
Marc-Andre Fleury is a free agent
I'm kidding, that's probably not going to happen.
6:48
There will be other names available though. Remember Merzlikins, Kuemper, Korpisalo, Campbell, Petersen, Lankinen, etc etc are all set to be UFAs
That's a bunch of names who could be a starter for several years
6:49
Depending on what happens in 2021-22 obviously
Deven Paul
6:49
Is it possible the Kraken signed all those free agents to make trades down the road with the excess of young talent they have now? Kind of a wait and see what we need to fill come trade deadline and be a win now team? I personally think that would be very stupid but I see that narrative playing out
Gavin Lee
6:50
Oh, signing players with the plan to trade them is a great plan. That would have been mine. But the Kraken signed a 29 year old Schwartz for 5 years and gave him a full no-move for the first three. That's not a pump-and-flip move, that's a "this guy will be a key part of our success" move
6:51
It's just incredible that the Kraken have a worse cap situation than the Red Wings, with no extra draft picks to show for it
More blues
6:52
Lots of blues talk so far, sorry for another. If going to NYI, does sending Mayfield to Stl seem like an overlay based on Tarasenkos numbers that past couple of years?
Gavin Lee
6:52
Well, it obviously depends a lot on whether the Blues are retaining salary and how much that is
6:53
And I mean it's not an overpay I guess, but also it just doesn't seem like an Islanders-type move at all
Mayfield for Tarasenko sounds so much more like what a fan wants than a coach/GM
Dead Things
6:54
Outside of Appleton, do you see any other breakout stars emerging from the morass in Seattle?
Gavin Lee
6:54
That's another reason why I hate the Schwartz/Wennberg deals!
6:55
I don't think there will be many breakouts, because I think the top six is going to have Eberle, Schwartz, Wennberg, Donskoi, McCann and Gourde, when healthy
6:56
I guess McCann could "breakout" and I've made my thoughts on Gourde clear here before, I think he's probably the best forward their team has
6:57
But so many minutes are getting taken by these middle-of-the-road signings
Just don't love it.
Durch
6:58
I see buch as being the tarasenko replacement and saad as the Schwartz replacement who is the Hoffman replacement? Kostin in the lineup though he’s not the same type of player?
Gavin Lee
6:58
No one is really a Hoffman replacement, he's a pretty unique player in the NHL to be honest
But Kostin should get a chance to take some of those minutes for sure. Kyrou will get a big bump I think.
Sabres
6:59
Who agrees to sign with Buffalo to get them to the cap floor?
Gavin Lee
6:59
They have Dahlin, Mittelstadt and Jokiharju to sign still
If they trade Eichel things get more complicated, but they could bring salary back in the deal
7:00
I don't think they're going to give a free agent some silly deal just to get to the floor
Just trade for a bad contract if you're desperate
Alright everyone I'm going to shut it down there. Go watch the rest of the U.S-Canada Women's worlds!
7:01
See you next week.
