Cito's Mustache
6:29
If Eichel wants one medical procedure, and the team wants a different one, how does it get resolved? Is there something in a player's contract about this?
Gavin Lee
6:29
Don't get me wrong there are mechanisms to change what I'm about to say, and a grievance process that can be initiated, but basically, the Sabres hold the cards there. If Eichel was to go off and get a procedure that the team did not approve, they could suspend him without pay or even potentially terminate his contract
6:30
It normally gets resolved by the different parties making a compromise of some sort, but both sides here have dug in their heels.

Philly loading up and taking care of business. What did u think of the Farabee and couturier extensions?
Gavin Lee
6:32
The Farabee one is good. I'm normally a proponent of using bridge deals and arbitration to maximize the value you can get out of a young player, but the fact that they got 6 years at that number is a win I think
6:33
Couturier..I understand why they signed it, they want him to be a Flyers legacy player, but it's a mistake
It's too long. I understand the thought process, I just don't agree with it

Do you think Eklund is a lock to play NHL this year?
Gavin Lee
6:36
I don't think there's much chance at all he plays in the NHL this season, at least not until later in the year I guess
He's still on the Djurgardens roster
He'll be at camp, but I think he plays in the SHL again

With the Jets new D core, legit cup contenders?
Gavin Lee
6:37
I mentioned them last week as a contender, yeah.
I like what they've done to lengthen out the defense
6:38
It's not star-driven at all, but I like the overall group
It's kind of the opposite of Vancouver, where I think there is enough variance that a player like Neal Pionk might just explode because he has enough support from the rest of the group
6:39
Schmidt can go back to the role he is best at, transporting the puck, instead of being this weird quasi-shutdown guy like the Canucks tried to use him
6:40
I'm not saying they're the favorite or anything, but I liked their offseason overall

Thoughts on the Parayko extension (8-yr, 6.5 AAV). Seems like an awfully good deal for the Blues when comparing it to some of the other recent deals for D-men.
Gavin Lee
6:40
It all comes down to Parayko's health
Quite frankly he hasn't been very good for over a year
6:41
If his back injury is actually in the past--he said it feels better than ever today--and he goes back to the elite player he was as a youngster? It's a great deal
But I'm a little hesitant to believe it
I think it was pretty risky to give him that many years
6:42
But on the other hand--it's probably an injury concern that'll make it look bad, so maybe LTIR is in his future anyway and the years don't matter
Mike
6:43
Who do you think has the highest upside from the draft. Been reading up on Kent Johnson and he sounds legit
Gavin Lee
6:44
I think there is a case to be made for Luke Hughes to have the most upside out of anyone in the draft, but you could argue for any of the first handful of picks really
6:45
Power's floor is so (so) high, but I think he has a lower ceiling than some of the others. Beniers probably doesn't have the same offensive ceiling as Johnson or Eklund, but his overall contributions will be bigger
6:46
McTavish is something of a wildcard, because I actually think he could be a better NHL player than he ever will be in junior

I know fans like to rail on Bettman, (sometimes rightfully so - I am not a huge fan), but given the league has a new TV deal, he ushered in the first truly professional team in Vegas - who we
Are still successful. My question before I accidentally hit send was, do he get some slack for weathering the last 2 years?
Gavin Lee
6:47
I don't think he'll ever really get much relief from the chorus of boos, and I get why, but he also has been an outstanding commissioner in terms of the financial health of the league
6:48
That's not fun for fans, and he has arguably made the on-ice product stagnate, but in terms of stabilizing the league he has been an excellent force for the owners

Bruins fan here cup or bust for us?
Gavin Lee
6:49
Well they're certainly going for it.
I've said a few times before that the window has closed on Boston--probably to the anger of Bruins fans in here--and I don't mean they'll never win another Cup.
6:50
I just mean that I don't think they can with the group of Bergeron-Marchand-Krejci-Rask-Chara being the driving force
Now that you see three of those names not on the roster, maybe the window is cracking open again
But it needs new players to pull it open
6:51
McAvoy is doing his part. But they need Ullmark to pull his weight this year if they want to win. Taylor Hall has to become more than just a secondary scoring piece.
