Hello and welcome to another chat! Glad to be back.
Anything happen today?
Mike

thoughts on the Eichel deal?
Jason
6:05
Your true thoughts on the Vegas & Buffalo deal?
Gavin Lee
6:05
Might as well talk about this first
6:06
When the Sabres traded O'Reilly, if you were in this chat you probably remember me defending the move, at least partway. I thought the Sabres were closer to contending than they really were, and my thought was that at least those three players would be NHL regulars--something they didn't have a ton of to go along with the young talent of Eichel/Reinhart/Dahlin.
6:07
Obviously that turned out terribly, they not only were a bad team but Berglund and Sobotka were far from useful pieces.
In this case, I think they at least have learned from their mistake. There is still a lot of talent there in Buffalo, enough that you could see them competing the next few years.
6:08
But instead of adding three okay pieces, they added two with much higher upsides.
Alex Tuch is a great player, better than any of the ones they received in the O'Reilly deal.
Krebs is a great prospect too, and is known as one around the league, not just by fans.
6:09
They both have huge value right now and will for the next few years, if things in Buffalo don't actually improve
At the end though, I think I may be learning from my own mistake as well.
6:10
Eichel is the best player here. He's probably always going to be the best player, even as time goes on
There's risk with the surgery, but man, the idea of adding Eichel without even really taking a player off the current roster is kind of insane.
I know Krebs was playing, but he was a fringe option only because of injuries really
6:11
The one thing I will bring up again is my focus on surplus value, however, and the risk that Eichel doesn't provide much of that even if he returns to form.
The Golden Knights at least have several other deals that provide plenty of surplus--but Tuch was one of those.
You can't keep swapping those out for market-rate talent--like they did with Pietrangelo too--and expect to stay competitive.
6:12
It's a risk, and one that will force the team to continue to search for bargains (or develop them themselves) elsewhere
Okay moving on

alex Newhook heating up call him up or give him the year in the AHL?
Gavin Lee
6:13
It's pretty obvious that Newhook is too good for the AHL, but I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing.
I'd only call him back up at this point if I was ready to commit to him for a while.
I wouldn't want to yo-yo.
Because of the big deals Colorado has given out, they also have to think of cap implications going forward
6:14
Because Newhook burned the first year of his deal last season, there's a real chance that he could enter his RFA year (2023) with only one season of NHL experience under his belt
That could lead to a nice inexpensive bridge deal for the Avs

Any news on Boldy? Any chance Rossi get a look?
Gavin Lee
6:15
No news I've seen on Boldy recently..his injury timeline is still a little bit away, isn't it?
I think he was given 4-6 weeks
6:16
Rossi is one I'd probably leave in the minors, but I'd have to be closer to the health situation to really make that decision
6:17
Just don't think there's much wrong with letting a kid get his feet under him with a year in the AHL, after missing an entire development year
John
6:17
Following Detroit and Edvinsson. Some think hedman? Probably unrealistic but what do you think he can become?
Gavin Lee
6:18
I mean the comparison to Hedman is going to come, but there is a LOT of work to get there.
The upside is at that kind of level (maybe a bit below), but the realistic outcome probably isn't that high
Jackets fan
6:19
So we won the jones trade allready right?
Gavin Lee
6:19
Hahaha
6:20
I bet a lot of Chicago fans would think so, yes
You can't really say they traded Sillinger, but props to Columbus for nailing that pick (or so it seems so far)
