The top half of the league.
But not the very top.

Who do the leafs move to sign Barrie?
Morten
7:06
Have many of Muzzin, Barrie and Ceci do you think Leaf resign before they become UFA?
Gavin Lee
7:06
I do wonder now if they'll go hard at Barrie, after he's taken so well to this new coaching staff/system.
7:07
Muzzin has actually seemed to struggle with it, while I can't imagine them bringing Ceci back for anything more than say..$1MM/season.
In terms of who they'll "move," they don't really need to move anyone.
7:08
They'll probably have something like $10MM for two defensemen.

If Habs miss playoffs, will both Claude and Bergevin go? Geoff Molson seems married to Bergevin.
Gavin Lee
7:08
Should they? I think the team has taken pretty nice steps forward over the last two years.
7:09
I didn't see them as a real Cup contender this year, but they should be in the playoff hunt, which they are.

Ok. Pick one to start your franchise. Carter Hart, Makar, Laine or McDavid.
Gavin Lee
7:09
I'll rank them: McDavid, Makar, Laine, Hart

But if they miss playoffs again, clearly a step backwards.
Gavin Lee
7:10
If they miss by a lot, sure.
7:11
I don't think they're getting much less than could be reasonably expected from this group.
But they've also added legitimate young star talent that should grow.
They also are in good financial shape even with the two big deals.

starting your franchise: (in their primes) who comes first?  Lindstrom,Datsyuk,Osgood,Shannahan
Gavin Lee
7:12
I imagine that's Lidstrom--he's who I would go with.

Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Shanahan, Osgood

What's wrong with Jack Hughes? Seems to be getting outshined by his brother in Vancouver (who is a good player in his own right).
Gavin Lee

Remember he's a year and a half younger than Quinn, and didn't have the benefit of playing in the NCAA first.
7:14
I don't think anything is wrong with him. I think he's a small 18 year old trying to find his way.
He's still a positive for the team, and he's still going to score ~50 points as a teenager.
7:15
Alright folks I'll stop it there.
Have fun watching football tonight, or if you're in Montreal/New Jersey, the one hockey game.
See you next week.
