No one is taking that contract hahaha. I'm sure they'd love to move him out, though! Cap hit would be fine with retention, but that three-year term is looking regrettable awfully quick.

Any chance they trade toffoli now and resign him I'm the off season
Josh Erickson
7:42
Yes, but it's slim. They won't want to go past the 3-to-4-year range, and understandably so. I think he wants more than that, but I can see him circling back to NJ if the long-term offers aren't coming.

Looks like a few interesting names on the waiver wire (and expecting maybe a few more as the trade deadline passes). Anyone on the list who you think is a no-brainer pickup?
Josh Erickson
7:43
I don't think anyone moves the needle. Raanta at $1.5MM seems like a solid backup bet for the Flyers as a pending UFA, though. Even with his struggles, he's a safer option than Petersen or Sandstrom

Josh: Good morning. Do you think the Panthers put Spencer Knight in play to make an acquisition plus reduce payroll to sign Reinhardt, etc?
Josh Erickson
7:45
I'm sure it's something they're thinking about. Whether it's wise is a different question. They'd be selling low, he's been really pedestrian (.898 SV%, 2.64 GAA, 2 SO, 19-12-4) with AHL Charlotte, but you have to do what you have to do when you're in the peak of your contention window with Barkov/Tkachuk/Ekblad

Is Tristan Jarry in black and gold this afternoon?
Josh Erickson
7:47
If it's a retool and not a rebuild in Pittsburgh, which it is by all accounts, he absolutely should be. He's been a consistently above-average guy for five years in a row – very few goalies have that level of consistency. I was one of the few who really liked that extension last summer, looks to be paying off for them now. He's far from being the issue there and, if they want to get back into the playoffs next year (seems like they do), it makes no sense to trade him

Do you think Dallas picks up a depth forward? And will it be depth scoring or more of a defensive forward, like Faksa or Dellandrea? Someone who can score, but is utilized more as a shutdown/penalty killer guy.
Josh Erickson
7:48
Don't think so, at least if they think Dadonov will be back before the end of the regular season. His timeline is still pretty unclear. They won't have any cap space for other moves if he's back.

Detroit ?  Any news ?  Thought they had some "D" that would be moved.?
Josh Erickson
7:50
I think those moves will come over the summer. Those contracts are heftier and harder to move in-season, and all of their high-valued players are ones they should be holding onto.
7:51
Don't think this is a year to buy, either. The vibes are great, but the underlying numbers are not. Playoff experience will be good for this young core, but I think they're out in 5 games.

you see the Flyers doing anything more?
Josh Erickson
7:52
I'd keep an eye out for Laughton as I mentioned earlier, but otherwise, I think it's in their best interest to stand pat.

Could you explain Dubas's logic (at least maybe from his POV) to accepting the Guentzel trade? Feels like he prioritized high floor, low-ceiling and quantity over quality in the return.
Josh Erickson
7:53
Baffling. I woke up to that one in the middle of the night and still can't wrap my head around it. Carolina's pool is so incredibly deep, and they didn't manage to get one of their five best prospects or a guaranteed first.
7:54
The prospects they got are decent and they'll get NHL games out of them. But Guentzel is a perennial point-per-game winger... getting a 15% crack at a first-round pick (condition is if CAR makes the 2024 final) is simply unacceptable
None of those are players that will be able to help now, either, aside from Bunting who is notably not under the age of 25
7:55
The total value coming back, nor the actual pieces in the deal, fit their needs. It's just baffling how that was the offer that landed him
Mike
7:55
Chychrun dealt today?
Josh Erickson
7:56
For those who have asked about a dark horse out of nowhere, this would be my pick. I know there's been some chatter, but nothing concrete. He'll thrive if given the chance on a competent team

Did the Penguins do well in the Guentzel trade?
Josh Erickson
7:56
Not quite an F, but a solid D+

What's next for the leafs? Any more moves? If so any ideas who are possibilities? I've heard Toffoli from a few guys but that's about it.
Josh Erickson
7:59
Knies' injury last night doesn't look to be serious, so crisis averted there. The RHD market is dried up. I know Chychrun plays both sides and would be a great stylistic fit, but that would keep them with 5 or 6 lefties in the lineup.
8:00
Would like to see another C to upgrade on Domi, but no one out there worth shopping a first for. Not sure if Mikael Granlund with retention moves the needle?
E
8:01
Any bigger names who may not have been openly discussed that could be moved today? Along the lines of Zegras or Letang?
Josh Erickson
8:01
Not today, no. Anyone you're thinking about probably has too rich a contract to have something worked out last-minute during the season without the luxury of the offseason cap.
Tommy
8:01
Some have that all the deadline moves from last year screwed up the team chemistry for the Rangers. If they stayed pat at this point, would that be considered a failure?
Josh Erickson
8:02
I wouldn't call it a failure. Panarin won't slow down next year. Lafrenière is 22. They still have another few years with this core
Alex
8:02
Do you expect other teams to start following Vegas and Tampa's ways when it comes to maneuverability - lets put it that way, kindly - with LTIR?
Josh Erickson
8:03
Depends on if you have the injuries to make it work!
E
8:03
Is Dallas done?
Josh Erickson
8:03
I think so, yeah. Really no cap space left without a guarantee that Dadonov is done for the year
Phil
8:03
Follow on the NYR for Vatrano thought - do you think a 2nd + Edstrom / Berard does it? Do you think it needs to be both? Or do you have something else entirely in what constitutes ‘strong package’?
Josh Erickson
8:04
Yeah, a 2nd and a B-level prospect should probably get that done
BlueJayCrazy
8:04
Any chance the Lleafs make a better trade than the one they already made? Maybe for a player that is better than the ones they already have?
Josh Erickson
8:05
They should, but I don't get the feeling they will
