Is Rutherford now on the hot seat? Trading away too many picks (they could have had Barzal!!!!! - look it up!!) and now two early exits seem to have put two recent consecutive Cups in the rear view mirror.
Gavin Lee
6:39
Lots of teams could have had Barzal
Let's be clear, Jim Rutherford was just inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame and took the Penguins to consecutive Stanley Cups just a few years ago.
I don't think his seat is all that hot.
They're trying to win every year, as they have to while Crosby and Malkin are on the team.

Seems like the Blues are going for a keep the gang together offseason except Edmondson may be too pricey. Would there be a trade market for him?
Gavin Lee
6:40
Sure there would be, not a huge one but they could find a taker if they wanted to.

Are the Blackhawks crazy or am I a good chance of scenery rebound candidate?
Gavin Lee
6:41
Yeah I actually don't hate that take, I think he could have a fine year.

Hey Gavin!  Who do you see the Ducks targeting in free agency?  Any big, or at least medium sized splashes?  Thanks!
Gavin Lee
6:41
I think it would be tough to justify going after one of the big names
6:42
But there is room on their blue line for an addition, and up front a lot depends on how far along they think the kids are (and how far along Troy Terry is in his rehab)
Don't expect them to be the big spenders though, I don't think

can you see Vegas dealing Gusev's rights somewhere along with Clarkson's contract as cap shed?
Gavin Lee
6:43
This is an interesting one to me, just because of the way McPhee spoke about Gusev this morning. A little odd, I thought.
Hard to trade him before you really get to see him, but Vegas doesn't have cap room right now.

Do you see the Blues trading away Pietrangelo or Schenn if they can't sign them up for long term?
Gavin Lee
6:44
Boy that is a lot tougher after winning the Cup.
I think they try as hard as they can for as long as they can to keep them, but Doug Armstrong is known for making hard decisions on expiring contracts.
Remember he traded Shattenkirk and Stastny in consecutive seasons despite being in the playoff hunt.

What and when will the Leafs do anything?
Gavin Lee
6:45
Lots of reporting about them being stuck waiting on Marner, but I wouldn't be surprised if they jump into the fray in the next few days (on Monday at the latest, I'd imagine)
6:46
Nikita Zaitsev is the obvious choice, given that he's owed a signing bonus and wants out.
ATX King
6:46
With the Kings in a youth movement, what vets are traded this off season? and for what value?
Gavin Lee
6:47
I think Forbort and Martinez are probably the most likely to go in the offseason, for a decent value.
6:48
Justin Braun just landed two picks, for instance.
Toffoli to me seems like such a trade deadline move, after loading him up with powerplay time for the first half of the year
The wild cards are Carter and Quick, but I'm still not convinced either will actually move.

why havent tge caps traded andre b. and get out of the 3 million plus qualifying offer which he is not worth?
Gavin Lee
6:49
Here's the thing. They tried to trade him in season and couldn't find enough of a return, and I don't doubt they tried again before the QO deadline.
You just can't let him walk out the door though. That qualifying offer is a big one for a cap-strapped team, and arbitration could be even worse.
6:50
But he's too talented to let walk for nothing
They don't have to be in a rush to move him.
But I do think it happens at some point.

Should the blues deal Jake Allen?  What kind of return could they get.
Gavin Lee
6:50
Sounds like they're happy to keep him.

Why do players get so fussy when it comes to money? Why does it matter? Why not be team friendly?
Gavin Lee
6:51
Do you turn down raises at your job?
6:52
This is a career for them. They've worked their whole lives to be able to play hockey as a job.
Just like anyone who looks for a better opportunity three months into a new position, hockey players will look for the most money
