And remember, they did get a chance to look at him first hand last season, in practice at least.
If they don't think he's a $4MM player (or whatever he's truly looking for) I can't blame them for checking the market. His name is going to bring a fair bit of value.

Where does Marcus  Jonnasen and Ryan Dzingel end up?
Gavin Lee
6:22
You have to think that Ken Holland is trying his best.
But I still think one might end up in Buffalo

Thanks for the chat. Thoughts on a marner for mcavoy deal if both continue unsigned?
Gavin Lee
6:23
Not sure how switching teams would get either of them signed, if they can't come to terms now.
Don't think it would happen in a million years.

What else do you see the pens doing as they are against the cap.
Gavin Lee
6:23
There's another trade coming.
6:24
Bjugstad, Rust, Johnson...I'd imagine one is on his way out.

The Canucks have to make the playoffs in the next two years, else Tampa gets an unprotected lottery pick.
Will the Nucks make it?
Gavin Lee
6:24
They've got some really good young talent, but there's certainly no guarantee.
Which is pretty scary as a franchise.

Did the Coyotes give up too much for three years of an aging winger?
Gavin Lee
6:25
No.
I don't understand where all these takes have come from on how bad Phil Kessel is. Everyone realizes that he put up 82 points last season right
Kessel is an elite offensive talent.
Galchenyuk is not.
6:26
PO Joseph is a lottery ticket
Ken Holland
6:26
I've been a manager for 22 years and I certainly know when to pay and when not to pay. I've seen everything so I'm not shocked that players like Ferland, Johansson and Dzingel are still available, but it's a little surprising. Do you think we can get one of them for an offer around 3.5 to 3.75 million anually?
Gavin Lee
6:26
I think all three will cost you more than that, Ken.
Ben Chiarot and Brandon Tanev just got $3.5MM.
Chris
6:27
Which team do you think should've done more in free agency?
Gavin Lee
6:27
Almost all of them should have done less, to be honest.
Lots of bad money went out on July 1, just like every year.
6:28
That said, Edmonton NEEDS to do something to improve
And locking up Alex Chiasson isn't it.
I'm not sure why $2MM for Mike Smith was the choice either.

Any contracts that already seem like an overpay? The Tanev and Myers contracts already look questionable to me
Gavin Lee
6:29
Stralman probably too.
The Tanev contract is just completely nutty
Even if he does find another gear in Pittsburgh.
There's no way his market was that high
6:30
In all seriousness Panarin is probably an overpay, even though he's an elite player
6:31
The Zuccarello deal is probably bad too.

It sounded like Sweeney is looking at all options on Backes to get him off the roster. He said he had his list of 8 teams, but for now he is part of team. What teams do you think on his list could take on this contract with or without Boston retaining salary. I do not think Backes wants to be on the 4th line.
Gavin Lee
6:32
Normally when you submit a list like that though, you put teams that couldn't trade for you on it. That way you essentially have a full no-trade.
And control over where you go.
