It's not exactly the first year of the deal, but there is $21MM in bonuses over the first 12 months--the bonuses due at the start of each contract year
Dundon is certainly posturing like it was not a problem.
But there's no way they were hoping to structure Aho's contract like that.
6:46
Can they add a big name? Depends on what you mean by that. A big contract? Probably not. A talented player, sure they do.

Do you think it's possible we see another offer sheet this offseason?
Gavin Lee
6:46
I doubted we would even see one (and I'm still not sure if we saw a real one).
But sure, anything is possible now.

Do you see an offer sheet coming for Point? Same agent as Aho. Guessing a high first year AAV causes the Bolts to think about it
Gavin Lee
6:47
You kinda contradicted yourself there. AAV means average annual value, it's the same across the whole contract.
They would match just about any contract offered to Point, and figure it out afterwords.
No one is taking him out of Tampa
Chris Drury /nyr 4 sure

Take on what most feel (especially ranger fans ) has been a amazing off season ?  what other moves can you see for the rangers ?
Gavin Lee
6:48
They'll probably sell off another couple pieces at some point, but you should be very excited about the direction the team is going.
I personally don't think I would have gone after Panarin, but I know that having a star in New York is a big deal for the franchise.
He can be that star, and let the other kids develop a little out of the spotlight

What are the Islanders going to do to improve, and show the fan base they're finally serious about contending?
Gavin Lee
6:49
I think they showed the fan base that when they hired Lou Lamoriello and Barry Trotz, to be honest.
Handing your captain a seven-year deal also should show this.
6:50
I'm not sure what else you really want them to do. They went hard after the best free agent on the market, but he picked the other New York team.
Throwing money at other people isn't how you go about being serious about contending

What's the word on Marner?
Gavin Lee
6:50
Talks continue, speculation on offer sheets continue.
6:51
One thing to remember in these situations is that there is not necessarily even daily contact between the two sides, much less the hourly updates that fans want.
There's not really a rush

Rangers suddenly need cap space. Kreider for s pick and a prospect was always a possibility. Namestikov could go. Is there any team interested in Shattenkirk? Anyone? Bueller?
Gavin Lee
6:52
I answered a similar question above, there are lots of options for the Rangers. They're not in a bind.
6:53
They can move those first two you mentioned an actually get assets, or do some manipulation.
Shattenkirk, going to be a tough trade at $6.65MM
Not a lot of teams have that kind of space if they're in any way competing

Thoughts on Leafs-Av's trade?
Gavin Lee
6:53
Like it for both sides.
6:54
The Avalanche get a player probably at his lowest cost in several years, and the Maple Leafs take a shot for at least another year with an right-handed upgrade.
Those are the kinds of trades teams like Toronto have to make if they want to win.
The Avalanche meanwhile are building a monster.

I actually like the Tanev signing more than most but I still think that the length and terms are insane. And at the likely cost of Rust or Bjugstad? Why did Rutherford do this when he knows that they are perpetually up against the cap? Or why do ANY of these GMs so this when we all know that they are spending like drunken sailors on leave? They know their financial situations better than most. It's mind-boggling.
Gavin Lee
6:55
Don't get me wrong, Tanev is a fine player.
6:56
There's just no way you need to give him six years.
I honestly think there is an argument to be made to just never sign a player on July 1.
Mn hoping!
6:57
Which teams realistically have a chance of prying Gusev from Vegas?
Gavin Lee
6:57
Anyone with $4MM in cap space really. Don't think McPhee and McCrimmon would be all that picky.
