Laine and Connor might take much longer.

Which UFA still unsigned on the market do the Blues give a “tryout” type contract to for the pre-season?  I don’t know what it’s called in the NHL, but in the MLB they’re called spring training invite type deals.
Gavin Lee
7:02
They're called professional tryouts in the NHL, you had it.
7:03
I wonder if guys like Andrew MacDonald, Jason Pominville, Ryan Spooner, Dan Girardi, etc might have to settle for them.
Blues don't have a lot of holes to fill though

What is the last date teams must be at or below the salary cap? If a team is over what is the penalty?
Gavin Lee
7:04
So the team must be at or below the cap on the first day of the season, but there is so many complications to that statement that it's impossible to go through them all here.
7:06
For instance, a player's entire cap hit isn't put on right away--teams use the cap in daily increments but are still limited by a projected year-long total. This means that you can "bank" cap space if you are under it at the start of the year by having waiver-exempt players (including those that have cleared waivers recently) spend off days technically in the minor leagues.
7:07
A team that is technically over the cap in the summer could start the year with a 20-man roster, for instance, to get underneath it when the year begins.
Long-term injured reserve can also be used both in the offseason and regular season, but have different calculations on how it works.
7:08
There are about 1,000 of these little intricacies and more keep coming out as time passes--last year we found out that college players signing their ELC at the end of the year actually put a huge cap hit on the team's books for those last few weeks
7:09
In short, it's complicated.

7:09
It traditionally has been, but how much of a bloodbath is the Central going to be this year?
Gavin Lee
7:10
All seven teams should be competitive.
Which is going to make for some terrrrrible moves at the trade deadline.

7:10
Do you see any natural matches between teams who may need to move a player due to cap constaints and teams who have the cap space to add a player in that situation?
Gavin Lee
7:11
I mean why Ottawa isn't all over Nikita Gusev I have no idea. Maybe he is threatening to only sign with specific teams.
7:12
The thing is there aren't a ton of teams with cap space right now, because of these RFAs holding up the market.
A team like Philadelphia looks like it has a lot until you realize that Konecny, Laughton and Provorov all need new deals.

What is the Sabres next move - I would assume they will trade from their stock of d-men.  Any particular players they should be targeting via trade?
Gavin Lee
7:13
I imagine they will move from the right side, though i'm not totally convinced it will be Ristolainen like everyone else is.
Steve
7:14
Gavin, what is the biggest issue in the next cba? These issues going to cause yet another lockout?
Gavin Lee
7:14
It actually sounds like they have made some positive progress and a lockout might not happen.
Big issues are signing bonuses, contract term, escrow and international play
Entry-level deals will be a sticking point too
Kyle
7:15
Is Jake Allen still with the Blues by the time the regular season starts?
Gavin Lee
7:15
Yep, I think so.
They've put out that they aren't looking to trade him (though that doesn't always mean anything)

I thought it was a mistake not to resign Ferland.  Who takes his place on the roster?
Gavin Lee
7:16
Haula, kind of.
Totally different player I know but a bunch of those minutes will go to him.
I am surprised though that Carolina wasn't able to get him at that number.
7:17
They have kids coming too though, maybe just didn't want to fill another spot.
CONNOR MAC
7:17
Connor here from... oh let's just say Alberta. Anything the Oilers going to do to help out that #97 kid they have?
Gavin Lee
7:17
There has to be something coming in Edmonton, there just has to be.
7:18
As a hockey fan I can't watch that same team on the ice again.
7:19
Alright guys I'll shut it down there.
Thanks for everything as always.
See you next week!
