I think he'll be effective, but not a star.
JP
6:43
Can the Hawks stars return to form and show that last year was a fluke, or is this definitely the start of a slow, painful decline?
Gavin Lee
6:43
Betting against Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith is a foolish idea, but I'll do it.
I don't think that it's a fluke, I think they're just aging.
6:44
That said, Brandon Saad should be better, DeBrincat and Schmaltz are older, and Forsling/Jokiharju/Boqvist are coming.
6:45
I think they'll be a bubble team for the next several years, but it's hard to project them as contenders.
JP
6:45
Is there a realistic possibility that Panarin comes back to Chicago next year?
Gavin Lee
6:45
Now this would be interesting.
I think it's possible, sure.
6:46
But there is lots of talk about the Rangers floating around.
That picture with Kucherov and Vasilevskiy today won't make anyone outside of Tampa Bay very happy either.

I've seen where the Pens system is poorly ranked. After years of drafting late and trading picks, how soon does this affect the product on the ice?
Gavin Lee
6:47
The thing about having two of the greatest centers to ever play in the NHL, is that you can surround them with a pretty blah supporting cast and still be in the Cup hunt every year.
6:48
Take a look at the Pittsburgh roster, even from the Cup winning years, and see how they put it together.
6:49
First round picks are great, but when they keep adding real NHL talent--even if it's not elite--in players like Zach Aston-Reese, Dominik Simon, Bryan Rust and Jake Guentzel, they'll be just fine.

Thoughts on who plays for the cup?
Gavin Lee
6:50
What did I say earlier this summer. Jets-Lightning?
Let's go with Jets-Lightning.

6:51
What do you suspect the ducks do with Silfverberg?  Trade him?  Can they afford to pay him?
Gavin Lee
6:51
Rickard Rakell's ridiculous contract makes it possible for them to keep Silfverberg if they really want to.
6:52
I'm not sold they will, but I'd be shocked if they move on from him during the year.
Unless things fall apart of course, but I'm not betting on that.

Does Petr Mrazek finally become a true starting goalie in Carolina?
Gavin Lee
6:52
He might become a starter, but his competition is only Scott Darling.
6:53
I don't think he'll ever become more than an average NHL goaltender though. Maybe that's enough.

6:53
I might the minority that think Carolina is on the right path. Can Necas be a true #1 centre and who will have a larger impact immediately and overall. Necas or Zykov. And when will Jake Bean get his shot? So deep  on defense.
Gavin Lee
6:53
I think they're definitely on the right path, though they may have tripped over a rock with that Skinner trade.
6:54
I am high on Necas, and think his ceiling is a #1, yes.
Not sure I'd bet on him hitting that ceiling, but he'll be a really good player for Carolina for a long time.
6:55
Bean will (likely) get a year in the AHL this season to keep developming.
developing...
It's not like he's been blocked for a long time. He's only 20, and has one pro game under his belt.
6:56
Over ripening talent, especially on defense, is a good thing.
Bob
6:56
Where do you think the Ducks should play Corey Perry this year?  Do they move him down to the 3rd line to give him better matchups?  Or keep him paired with Getz?
Gavin Lee
6:58
I think the issue here might be that you think anything can get Perry back to his prime performance. It can't unfortunately, he's just aging like so many players before him. The one thing I'll say, is that he had an uncharacteristically bad season on the powerplay.
That will likely rebound a bit, but I think lowering him in the lineup doesn't necessarily mean he'll perform better at even strength.

Arizona primed to move up this year? What do you think of raanta and I am a big chychrun fan. Can he be a point producer like OEL or will he be something else?
Gavin Lee
7:00
I'd just like to use this opportunity to point out that Oliver Ekman-Larsson has just one 50+ point season in his career.
For some reason, he's been labelled as an offense-only guy who racks up assists like they're nothing.
7:01
Can Chychrun put up 40-point seasons? Definitely he can. Will he get the same sort of "point producer" label, I don't think so. He's more reliable in his own end, and will create offense in a much different fashion.
