Dermott maybe, but he makes his fair share of mistakes too.
Robert
6:41
Do you think Boston will replicate last year? They have center depth but they also are old and have an injury history.
Gavin Lee
6:41
They're not all old. Lots of good young players trying to get into that line up.
I do think they're going to compete, but that Atlantic isn't going to give an inch.
Hard for anyone, Tampa Bay and Toronto included, to really run away with it.
Mike
6:42
I don't think there is a feud but is there not a pretty good case for trading Nylander for D-man?  I'm not sure to who, Vancouver, Carolina?  Some other young team....
Gavin Lee
6:43
There's only a case for it if the return is something of equal value, and not just for this season.
They'd need to get a young stud defenseman, and who is giving those away?
Bob
6:44
Thoughts on the Ducks young guys last night?  Bright futures?  Who stood out?
Gavin Lee
6:45
I was actually not a fan of Comtois at the junior level, never saw anything that would really stand out in the NHL. But he actually looked like he processed the game faster than I expected.
6:46
Sam Steel I still don't think is ready to play center in the NHL.
Harry
6:47
How many games will Karl Alzner play this year? The coach didn't consider them a part of their "best lineup" without Weber and Schlemko available. Yikes.
Gavin Lee
6:48
Yeah that's tough. I hated the Alzner contract when it was signed, mostly because of how long it was.
I think it may have been a message more than anything, but the group played pretty well last night.
6:49
The whole Montreal team was skating and competing hard. Why change things and put older, slower players in?
Gerald Arrington
6:50
How about trading Nylander to Vancouver for Ben Hutton, so he can play with Pettersson, Vancouver has surplus in minors better than what Toronto has in their system that are NHL caliber, if you look at the two minor league teams !
Gavin Lee
6:50
Nylander is leagues more valuable than Hutton.
6:52
Let's remember that Nylander is only just coming out of his entry-level deal. He's still five years away from UFA status, and has two 61-point seasons under his belt.
6:53
I'm not saying trading him is completely the wrong idea (though I probably wouldn't do it), just that it's almost impossible given what the team would need to give up for him.
Jon
6:54
As a follow up, what could Stone and Duchene realistically get in a trade? 1st rounder plus?
Gavin Lee
6:55
Both would command huge packages at the deadline.
Especially if there is an arms race with guys like Panarin being dealt.

6:56
Understood ,wasn't looking at contract. Was looking at multiple player deal, maybe if Vancouver includes Demko since Toronto is weak in goal in future plans and making package deal between clubs?
Gavin Lee
6:56
Yeah that's my point though, I don't think a package of good assets gets it done for Nylander. It would need to be another elite player/prospect.
6:57
Also, it's not like Toronto is hurting in net. They have two reasonably young goaltenders in the NHL, and a nice prospect in Joseph Woll coming.
Their minor league depth took a hit sure, but they won't be selling a guy like Nylander in order to fix that.

Is Carter Hart destined to spend a bulk of the season in the AHL or do you think he has a chance to take over as the Flyers goalie sometime in the first half? As a non-Flyers fan here in the Lehigh Valley I hope he stays here all year, but based on what I saw of him in junior it feels like he might be their best option in net sooner rather than later.
Calvin Pickard
6:59
CALVIN. PICKARD.
Gavin Lee
7:02
No seriously though, I don't totally disagree that Hart might be their best option.
Personally I'd make him prove it at the AHL level for a whole year though.
7:03
Make him shoulder the load of a professional season
And then if you really believe he can handle it, install him next year as the starter.
I actually think that might be their plan too, given Pickard's claim.

7:04
Do you think it was wise sending down Zadina to GR hockey?
Gavin Lee
7:04
Similarly, yes.
There's no reason to rush Zadina up other than to appease the fans in the stands and watching on TV.
That's a real concern for any management staff, but Detroit fans are savvy enough to know that the team isn't competing for the Cup this year.
If Zadina lights up the AHL, great! Bring him up later or next year and start building towards that contender.
7:05
Even having him succeed in the NHL doesn't do much other than waste a year of his cheap contract.
Just as a personal scouting report, there are also real warts to Zadina's game that need to be fixed before he can really be a top line contributor.
