Hayes is a pending unrestricted free agent, meaning the Rangers would have to pay up on a long-term deal. The best years of those deals would be the first 3-4, which don't project to be their real competitive seasons.
6:48
Instead, they are going to be able to trade him for at least a first-round pick at the deadline and continue to build up this impressive group of 23-and-unders.

Seems like puutimg all our eggs in one basket... rebuild over several years, keep in mind we have to keep them, and no lundquist
Gavin Lee
6:51
No Lundqvist is a problem, sure. Retaining all the young talent is tough too. But re-signing Hayes for a deal of ~$7MM/season doesn't make either of those things easier
And you still probably aren't a contender until the group of youngsters matures.
Don't get me wrong, there's no guarantee they trade him.
Maybe they do re-sign him, and maybe he agrees to something more team friendly.
6:52
But you've got to think there will be a team that desperately needs help down the middle for a playoff run (Boston?) and will pay up.
Blue Seats
6:53
I think he might, seems to be that type of teamate, but been wrong before lol
Gavin Lee
6:53
He certainly does seem to enjoy being a Ranger.
Patrick
6:53
Is the window closed for the Ducks?
Gavin Lee
6:53
Only for a little while.
There are really good players coming, you saw a snippet of them to start the year.

Is Talbot resigned in Edmonton? Or will Koskinen be the man in oil-town?
Gavin Lee
6:55
I'd be surprised at this point if they re-signed Talbot.
But, boy throwing it all on Koskinen is a risky proposition too.
6:57
Bringing in a veteran option to help him, like Varlamov, Howard, Miller, etc could be the answer. But there's not a ton of real front line starters available anymore unless you're willing to go after Bobrovsky.
6:58
The problem is you probably can't sign Koskinen (remember he's a UFA too) and any goalie who believes he's a starter still.
The Oilers don't have enough room.

Am I crazy for thinking the Kings should begin looking into trading Quick after the season with the emergence of Petersen?
Gavin Lee
6:59
You're not crazy, someone else asked it above!
7:00
If Quick shows enough down the stretch to warrant a real trade offer, I'd take it immediately.
Four more years of him at $5.8MM is probably not a good thing.
Patrick
7:01
How good is the upcoming draft class?
Gavin Lee
7:01
Not exceptional, from what I've seen.
There are some really, really good talents near the top
But a lot of risk in the second half of the first round
7:02
Still a lot of time for things to change though.
Players that age develop (or stall) quickly.
Rob
7:02
Who’s the best team in the central and who makes it to the conf final from the central?
Gavin Lee
7:03
I'll still say Predators for both.

7:03
When will the Sabres honeymoon come to an end? 10 games in a row (with a win) is crazy for the last place team from last year...are they the new Avalanche?
Gavin Lee
7:04
They certainly won't win forever. In fact, it might very well end tonight against a good Tampa Bay team.
But they are a legitimate playoff contender this season.
It's not all smoke and mirrors from that team, they just have a lot more good players.
I know that sounds silly, but it's not just that they've added elite guys. It's that they've also added several good players to fill in the holes behind those elite guys

Why do the Sharks suck? Give it to me straight.
Gavin Lee
7:08
They don't.
