Post-Winter Meetings Chat with MLBTR's Anthony Franco

They're not trading Salvy, and Dozier's not going to have any appeal. I agree they should aggressively market Barlow, who'd bring back a lot, and should at least see if anyone's willing to offer an interesting prospect or two for Taylor given how shallow the center field market is otherwise
Sean Manaea
1:19
Will my market heat up once Rodon signs?
Anthony Franco
1:20
Don't see them as related. Manaea's well below Rodón. Surprised it's been so quiet on him but other mid-tier starters have moved already
jaybird
1:20
Halos should sign Dansby?  Surprised it hasn't happened yet.
Anthony Franco
1:20
Makes a ton of sense from a roster perspective. No indication they want to take on a long-term deal like that though
1:21
They've been active, and I've really liked their offseason so far. They're plugging a lot of the gaps that sunk them last year, building the kind of depth they just haven't had for years. But everything they've done has been shorter term, and I don't expect that to change
Chris Antonetti
1:22
At what point in time do i seriously give consideration to trading Shane Bieber who is most likely not going to resign in Cleveland?  And what is a reasonable return on trading Plesac who is likely to precede Bieber out of town?
Anthony Franco
1:22
Not this offseason Bieber. If Cleveland stumbles early next year, he could move at the deadline. If they're in it, they'll hold him until next offseason
1:24
Plesac or Civale could go this winter, although neither's bringing back a whole lot. A couple mid-level prospects from a farm system, maybe an upper level outfielder to add to Cleveland's collection of interesting but flawed players out there
Not including Kwan in that, to be clear. He's really good. Brennan, González and Straw are all very different players with some standout skills but obvious limitations as well
Cold Brew
1:25
Brewers fan here.  Do I have anything to look forward to next season?
Anthony Franco
1:26
They kept their best players. They're the second-best team in the NL Central, and they'll add some lower-cost catching help and maybe a DH. They'll be pretty good
Tx
1:26
Can you settle this argument with a friend? Jonathan Gray >>> Pérez, right?
Anthony Franco
1:26
Yeah I'd rather have Gray
Sugarito
1:26
What are the chances the Mets might try to swing a deal with the Reds to get me to join my brother, Edwin?
Anthony Franco
1:27
Reds don't seem interested in moving Alexis Díaz. GM Nick Krall has been asked about it and basically suggested it's not on their radar
Alex Tapia
1:27
Do you think we have some blockbusters in the work after the winter meetings?
Anthony Franco
1:27
Still a ton to be accomplished on the trade market, which took a backseat to free agency. Sean Murphy's going to go, one of the Jays catchers is likely. D-Backs probably trade an outfielder, Marlins will move a starter
Matt
1:28
Who will Bryan Reynolds be playing for on opening day?
Anthony Franco
1:28
Boring as this answer is, I still think it's the Pirates. Guess if you took them out of the equation and assured me he got traded, I'd go with Texas
Bigs
1:29
What’s next for the Red Sox? They really seem to have no sense of direction and the lineup looks increasingly bare now. Their prior moves seem to hint they are still “trying” to compete, however you want to define trying.
Anthony Franco
1:30
Tough spot, although they do have a bunch of position players with some defensive flexibility that opens up the possibilities. They'll be in on Murphy, I think they're a good fit for Nimmo if they want to move Hernández to second and Story to short
1:31
Have to get at least one more starting pitcher too. They're not done, but it's fair to wonder whether their 2023 Opening Day roster will be better than the one that closed out the '22 season
Elvis Andrus
1:32
Am I overrated or underrated and what uniform am I wearing in April?
Anthony Franco
1:33
Don't see why it has to be either. I think he's generally rated as fine, a low-end starter who'll be a fallback option for teams that miss out on the top guys. I'll take Minnesota if I'm guessing Correa ends up in SF
Bill Schmidt - GM of Rockies
1:33
Do I know what I’m doing by doing nothing? If not, what should I do?
Anthony Franco
1:35
I just think they're hamstrung by a lot of their previous bad investments. They entered the offseason projected for a franchise record payroll despite having a bottom five roster. They have an interesting farm system but not a ton of desirable trade assets at the MLB level and no real path to getting anywhere close to the Dodgers, Padres or even Giants
Elias
1:35
There was a lot of buzz about the Orioles during the meetings but it faded fast on the last day with be Elias walking back the hype a bit. Did their plans go up in smoke or are they still involved?
Anthony Franco
1:36
I don't think Kyle Gibson will be the best starting pitcher they acquire. I also don't think they'll get a nine-figure free agent. Trading for an Urquidy type and/or signing Syndergaard feels viable
1:37
I don't know if that's meeting the fanbase's hype necessarily, but they'll do more than this
dipoto
1:37
It has been said I did not talk with any FA's and obviously did not make any trades this week.  What should I do with LF and DH?  Sell the farm for Reynolds?
Anthony Franco
1:37
(Mariners)
1:38
Reynolds makes sense but the competition's strong and it's very possible he doesn't move. I like the Conforto fit there the most
Brandon
1:39
The Pirates opening day catcher will be _____________
Anthony Franco
1:39
I'll say Roberto Pérez again
JCL
1:39
Which major free agent left do you believe won't sign until 2023?
Anthony Franco
1:40
Hmm, this is interesting. Could see the Bassitt or Eovaldi types being held up into the new year as teams prioritize Rodón and Senga
Orioles Fan
1:40
Could you see Michael Brantley as a good fit in Baltimore?
Anthony Franco
1:41
Sure, particularly if they deal Santander
Trade Market
1:41
Shortstops are getting ridiculous contracts that most likely won't age well. For teams that miss out who is available via trade currently or who do you think is available?
