Post-Winter Meetings Chat with MLBTR's Anthony Franco

Shortstop trade market is rough. Rosario and Kiner-Falefa seem like the most established players who might go. Nicky Lopez or Taylor Walls could move but neither can really hit. I think Luis Guillorme could be a dark-horse target if another team thinks he's a viable everyday player
No real pressure for the Mets to move him, but if a team like the White Sox really likes him, I'm sure they'd listen
Franco
1:44
Surprised how much $$ Yoshida got?
Anthony Franco
1:45
A little. Would've put him below Suzuki. Different offensive profiles but I'd probably prefer the guy with a more established power track record in NPB
1:46
The error bars on those are huge though. If your team's scouts over there think he's a 70-grade hitter who could hit .300 with a .370 OBP against MLB pitching, then go big

Have you heard anything about what a Cards trade for Murphy would have involved? Haven't heard a peep about the package the A's supposedly wanted, though I've heard it was a lot.
Anthony Franco
1:47
Steve's putting together a post on this as we speak

Dodgers not making any big moves, with some of the big names off the board, you see them doing anything?
Anthony Franco
1:49
They'll probably poke around on Rodón/Senga, definitely going to add to the rotation. They're about $44MM below the base CBT threshold right now, and it seems like they're open to dipping under this year to reset their tax penalties before making a run at the top of the free agent market next offseason
1:50
Can still get a couple very good players for $35-40MM while leaving some room for trade deadline pickups though. They'll get another starter and an outfielder at least

Is Tarik Skubal still a trade candidate or was that just a deadline rumor?
Anthony Franco
1:51
Felt like more due diligence even at the time, and he ended up suffering a flexor strain that required season-ending surgery in the second half. They won't move him this offseason, way too much of a sell low

good afternoon. Any news on Astros? Didn’t do anything in winter meetings. Just wanted to know if you all have heard any rumors. Thank you I appreciate it
Anthony Franco
1:52
Left field still looks the priority. Could try to get another catcher to pair with Maldonado. They've been linked to Brantley, Conforto, Benintendi a bunch and Chandler Rome just reported they're interested in the D-Backs outfielders
Tom
1:53
what happens with the 3 blue jays catchers?
Anthony Franco
1:53
I continue to expect a Jansen trade
Fast Vinny
1:54
Odds Ryan Noda can stick with the A’s for a full season?
Anthony Franco
1:54
Opportunity is certainly there, particularly if they're going to give Seth Brown a bunch of outfield reps. I'm glad someone's going to give Noda a shot. He's earned it with that kind of minor league production

The Twins have been rumored to be open to trades concerning Arraez. Should and/or could the Cardinals (who are still looking for a left-handed power bat and DH, but basically out of Free Agent money) make a trade happen to bring him to St. Louis and why or why not would that be a good deal?
Anthony Franco
1:56
Arraez isn't exactly a LHH power bat but I get your point about the uncertain DH mix. No harm in checking in but it feels like something Minnesota's only doing if they get a controllable mid-rotation arm back, which St. Louis doesn't really have to offer
1:57
Guess if the Twins trade Kepler and become very committed to shaking up the roster, maybe you can make something work with St. Louis' younger outfielders, but it's a stretch
BRAVES FAN

Can you give me some good news on anything?
Anthony Franco
1:58
Even if the Braves lose Swanson and don't make a major addition, they'll go into the 2023 season with a top five roster in MLB

How come people are spurning the Padres even when offered more money?  Not a Padres fan, but find this interesting
Anthony Franco
1:59
Not sure that's a fair characterization. Judge stayed where he's spent his whole career and Turner seemed to want to go east
And then they got Bogaerts

Best guess on Nimmo right now?  Think he will get 6 years? Same question for Senga.
Anthony Franco
2:01
Guess I'd push to six and like $125MM on Nimmo at this point. Senga, I'll go 6/$100MM with the early strength of the rotation market

Will the marlins make any offseason moves
Anthony Franco
2:03
I doubt all three of Pablo López, Trevor Rogers and Braxton Garrett are still on the roster on Opening Day. Moving one of them for an above-average bat feels like a necessity
Alright that's all I have time for today
2:04
Pretty sure this was the most attended chat I've ever run, so thanks for all the questions and apologies for the hundreds of things I couldn't get to
I'll run another chat tomorrow exclusive to Front Office subscribers, where you're significantly more likely to get a response
2:05
Our memberships also come with weekly posts from Steve and myself on various topics. I'm looking at what's next for the Yankees and Giants after the Judge decision. That should go out to subscribers this afternoon
If the memberships are of interest, you can find more about it here
Feel free to throw stuff at me on Twitter @affranco10 as well
We'll do this again next week, have a good one!
