Pre-Deadline Chat Bonanza Extraordinaire And Other Superlatives

Nick Krall

I have to trade Puig, Roark and Wood, right?
Steve Adams
1:01
Nick Krall may be the Reds' GM, but Dick Williams is the president of baseball ops.

At any rate, I think they should move all three, yes. But you could potentially make a QO to at least Puig. Roark would be a stretch for that given his age and more-good-than-great results.
Mike Elias
1:02
Could I get a decent return for Renato Nunez, or is he someone I could build with???
Steve Adams
1:03
(Mike Elias = Orioles GM)

I don't think Nunez has the defensive value or on-base skills to net a big return. They have him through 2024, so might as well hang onto him and see if he can improve in those areas. Besides, O's fans need some guys to cheer for, and a 30-homer bat is someone to market even if he's flawed in other areas

M's fan here. I'm really hoping they do not trade Santana.  Will I be happy come August 1?
Steve Adams
1:05
I don't think the return on him will be huge unless some team is convinced that this year's poor defensive ratings are a fluke. Feels like someone who'd be more in demand over the winter when more teams are optimistic about their chances for 2020-21. Given how many RH bats are out there right now, he feels more like a Plan B for teams than a Plan A.

All of that is to say... I think you have a decent chance of breathing a sigh of relief.

If the Twins add a starter, which pither moves to the bullpen: Perez or Pineda?
Steve Adams
1:06
I'd bet on Pineda just because he's in his first season back from TJ surgery (and 2018 knee surgery)
Al Avila
1:06
Why don’t I just keep castellanos and give him a QO at the end of the season? Then maybe work on a long term extension
Steve Adams
1:07
Tigers GM Al Avila and Castellanos' reps have talked extension enough to know the others' price point thresholds. No deal has materialized. They clearly don't see eye to eye on his long-term value.

Would the pirates take kiebert ruiz for Vasquez? Straight up
Steve Adams
1:07
Nope

Is Biggio, Vladdy Jr. and Bichette a good core for the future or largely hype?
Steve Adams
1:09
That's a damn fine core for Jays fans to dream on. Vlad and Bichette more so than Biggio.
Speculate away y'all:

The #Mets scratched Ervin Santana from his Triple A start today. Syndergaard scheduled to pitch for them in majors tonight. Not known whether two are linked.

Can you help me understand why the Jays told the Twins that any deal for Stroman had to include Lewis or Kirilloff and then they trade him for two players outside the top 100?
Steve Adams
1:11
I think the Blue Jays like Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods Richardson a lot more than the rest of the industry does. We get pretty hung up on prospect lists, but those aren't reflective of every teams' viewpoint by any means.

I saw several reporters tweeting out quotes from team officials saying they were shocked because the Jays asked them for WAY more than they took from the Mets -- so it's not just the Twins.

Realistically, will Nick C be moved?  I mean, who really wants or needs him?
Steve Adams
1:13
He's arguably the best hitter on the market right now. Rays, Astros, Cubs, Braves all make some sense. I think he's moved by tomorrow afternoon yeah
Whit Merrifield
1:14
I’m on the wrong side of 30 playing on a team that’s at least 2 years away from being two years away. Will I be moved in the next 24 hours?
Steve Adams
1:15
All of that is true, but he's also signed to one of the game's better contracts and would have huge value this offseason, next July, etc. They'll only move him for a mammoth haul, and that's the right play right now. I think he's likelier to stay than to go.
1:17
Certainly possible that a club just ramps up its aggression, views him as a major impact player through at least 2021 and puts out a huge offer headed by a pair of immediate but unproven MLB assets, but today's breed of GM/president tends not to be as irrational as the more emotional (and thus more fun) scout-turned-GM types.

Shane Greene  + ? = Carter Kieboom?
Steve Adams
1:18
Matthew Boyd? I don't think Kieboom is a realistic ask in Greene talks. At all.

Do you think MLB will keep the one deadline on 7/31?
Steve Adams
1:18
I can see it being pushed back to Aug. 15 or something.
Mark
1:19
will the ChiSox find any takers for Leury Garcia? He wouldn't bring a huge return but he could be valuable to contenders
Steve Adams
1:21
As a cheap utility/bench piece, sure, maybe someone has interest. But he's only controlled through 2020, and his overall offensive output has been below average even with a .370 BABIP this year. Maybe a team kicks the Sox a decent bullpen prospect or some other 40+ FV type of prospect, but I don't think he'll bring anything to further the rebuild all that much.
Generally, though, heck yeah they should be open to moving him if there's some interest.

is MLBTR staff "all-hands-on deck" for the deadline?

Think we'll have five of us on simultaneously tomorrow.

Any chance Jon Gray is dealt?  Could a Yankees OF (Frazier or Florial)  be part of a package to get him?
Steve Adams
1:23
I've gotten a lot of "who's your pick for surprise player to be moved," and Gray would be my choice. The Rox are buried in the NL West, they're not winning the Wild Card, and Gray's raw stuff should make teams drool.
Estevan Florial
1:24
They're not actually considering trading me, are they?  Dumb.
Steve Adams
1:25
Florial is hitting .227/.279/.347 with a 34% strikeout rate in his second trip through Class-A Advanced. I think Yankees fans have a more inflated opinion of him than other teams based on prior prospect rankings.
Dirk Diggler
1:25
If Nick C's .329 OBP, 11 HRs, 37 RBIs is the best on the market right now, that's a thin market. That's why Halos need to make Calhoun's .323 OBP, 24 HRs, 58 RBIs and Brian Goodwin's .343 OBP, 9 HRs, 28 RBIs available. Allows them to bring up Adell and focus on 2020.
Steve Adams
1:26
Castellanos has raked over the past five to six weeks, and he has a much better track record than Calhoun and especially Goodwin. Suggesting that Goodwin's bat has more value than Castellanos just isn't rooted in reality.

Do you think Caleb Smith will be on the move?
Steve Adams
1:29
I think the Marlins could get a pretty strong return for a pitcher who'll be 30 before they have a reasonable shot at contending, so they should be willing to listen. I don't buy him as an indispensable piece there with so many other young arms on the rise.
