Good Morning Will,

Hi Siddharth
Guest

The early deadline for MSE in Computer and Information Science was 15th November and the late deadline is 15th March. If I apply before 31st December , will my application be reviewed after 15th march? Also is the 15th March deadline just for seats that are left because of students that didn't enroll?
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
10:19
Guest, that is correct, your application will be reviewed after the March 15 deadline. No, the March 15 deadline is for anyone that didn't submit a completed application by Nov 15. So that's actually the vast majority of our applicants :)

I wanted to know if any scholarships or any other assistantship is available for international students in Masters program ?
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
10:21
Priti, Penn Engineering doesn't offer financial aid to master's students, domestic or international. Some of the programs to have RA/TA positions available, but you must have completed at least one semester in good academic standing before you can apply for the position.

I had a question with regards to expectations of the personal statement required by MSE in Robotics.
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
10:23
Siddharth, the expectations for that one are the same as they are for the rest of our programs. You can use these questions to guide your writing:
-Why are you interested in this program?
-What have you done that makes you a great candidate?
-How will you benefit from the program?
-How do you plan to contribute to the student community in SEAS while you’re here?
-Why will you succeed in the program?
-What will you do/accomplish once you have completed the program?

Thanks Will! Will do 😁

Hi Will, I'm applying for the MS in DS program. I'm a double major in Math and comparative literature. And one of my most involved  activity is the editor of student newspaper.  I do realize that this is very different from the quantitive skills needed for data science, but the social science application of data science is also what I'm interested in.  I'm wondering do you think reading and writing skill is worth emphasizing in the  application or should I focus on the quantitive skills?
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
10:25
Jenny, I think it's excellent that you are having such a well-rounded experience! We suggest you use the following questions to guide how you write the personal statement, which is where you can really draw this distinction:
-Why are you interested in this program?
-What have you done that makes you a great candidate?
-How will you benefit from the program?
-How do you plan to contribute to the student community in SEAS while you’re here?
-Why will you succeed in the program?
-What will you do/accomplish once you have completed the program?

That clarifies my doubts. Thank you so much will. I'll be sure follow those guidlines.

Hello Will, I wanted to apply for Masters in Embedded Systems but their site says that they are not accepting admissions from the FALL 2020 term. I wanted to know how the courses falling under this program are going to be distributed to other programs
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
10:30
Hi Sanish, that is correct, we are no longer accepting applications for that program. Several of the courses will be electives, primarily for the CIS/CIT and Systems Engineering programs.

I am applying for MSE in Computer and Information Science. How many percent of admits are given after the early deadline?
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
10:31
Guest, this varies every year, but it is usually around 9% or so. It is one of, if not the most, competitive master's program.

Is there anyone I can contact for detailed information regarding the Embedded Systems courses? So that I can apply for that program instead
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist

Folks, we will be off for two weeks and we'll be back on Jan 9, at 10AM EST for another chat. The next deadline that is coming up is the February 1, master's deadline.
10:52
We will still be responding to questions sent to gradstudies@seas.upenn.edu, as well as admissions1@seas.upenn.edu and admissions2@seas.upenn.edu over the winter break. However, there may be a delay, since we won't be working every day.

Hi Will, I notice that DS program requires a strong background in mathematics and stats, but what does that exactly mean? Do I have to have a degree in math/stats?
And may I know the number of applicants and acceptance rate for DS program last year?
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
10:59
John, you don't need to have a degree in math/stats, but they're looking for folks with a strong quantitative background. As for applicants and acceptance rate, we had 1107 applicants last year and accepted approx 9%.
