Hi, I am applying for the MSE CIS programme. After my GRE, I meant to report my scores to The University of Pennsylvania (2888 - Engineering)  but accidentally reported them to The University of Pennsylvania (2926 - Arts and Sciences)

Guest, that's fine. We'll still get them.

I am applying to the MSE Data Science Program and have a few questions. Firstly, how are the electives selected? Do students get placed in elective courses based on interests or on performance on the core courses? Secondly, what are the major differences between the thesis and practicum options?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:17
Sirawich, you would work with your Program Coordinator to select the electives. The major difference is that for the practicum, you don't do a thesis, whereas for the thesis option, you are actually doing a research-based thesis.

What is the GRE and TOEFL score you consider for admission to computer science graduate program?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:19
Gaurav, you can find some of that information here: https://dats.seas.upenn.edu/

Hi, Will. I am in my 7th semester of undergrad in Chemical engineering. I want to apply for a PhD program in chemical engineering. My TOEFL score is 86. So with this score, will my application be considered?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:20
Komal, we recommend a score of 100 or above. I can't say that we would automatically reject your application, but I would strongly encourage you to retake the exam, as that is a very low score for our applicants.

What is the application deadline and priority deadline, if any for computer science graduate program?

Gaurav, you can find that info here: https://gradadm.seas.upenn.edu/how-to-apply/

AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir

Sunny, you need to submit one application before you can begin the second, but yes, you can.

Hi, I am applying to the MSE CIS programme. After my GRE, I meant to report my scores to The University of Pennsylvania (2888 - Engineering) but accidentally reported them to The University of Pennsylvania (2926 - Arts and Sciences). Do I need to resend my scores to 2888 ?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:21
This is fine, we'll get the scores.

Do you require WES evaluation for the transcripts? And do we need to send hard copies of transcripts for application process?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:22
We do not require WES evaluation, and we don't require official copies of the transcripts unless you are admitted and choose to attend.

For the recommendation letter, it says a faculty recommendation letter is required. I was working with a professor in a research center, he is not my instructor for any class at school. Does his recommendation count as a faculty recommendation since he is a professor?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:22
Anny, yes, this would count. However, we'd also encourage you to include a letter from a faculty member that taught you, if possible.

Will the CGGT program admit international students as usual as in previous years?
Is there any ongoing plan regarding reducing the program's size?
Could you feed me some information regarding the admission statistic of this program?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:23
Yes, it will admit international students. We don't have any plans to reduce class size at this time. Last year we admitted approx 39% of applicants.

Thank you for your answers. I want to check advisory drop down list. Could you let me know where I can find it??
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:24
Kwangmin, you can find it on the application. Once you've selected the program, it will be on the next screen when certifying the program to which you intend to apply.

What is the annual intake for the computer science graduate program in this university?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:25
Gaurav, we usually have around 60-70 students in the program.
Theofilos Karavasilis

What is there on the way of financial aid for international graduate students?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:25
Theofilos, we don't offer financial aid for master's students, domestic or international.
Gaurav
10:11
What is the application fee? Is there any way I can get application fee waiver?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:26
Gaurav, it's $80. You can send an email to gradstudies@seas.upenn.edu requesting a waiver and explaining why you believe you should receive one. However, if you are planning to apply for a master's program, we don't usually give out waivers for financial means, since we don't provide financial aid for master's students.

Hello Will! I am applying for Robotics MSE program. Is there a early decision deadline for the program?
Does the TOEFL minimum requirement has any section-wise cutoff?
My institute gives CGPA in 10.0 scale, should I convert this to 4.0 scale or enter the 10.0 scale CGPA? If I am to convert, How do I do it?
For the Robotics program, which institute code and department code should I use in the GRE and TOEFL report service?
cool 1
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:27
Hi Ketan, there is only one deadline for the Robotics program. The TOEFL is a recommendation, not a requirement. You don't have to convert the GPA, just indicate on the application that it's 10.0. And we don't need a dept code for the GRE/TOEFL. Just use code 2888.

What are the scholarship opportunities provided for graduate programs? What is the criteria for offering scholarships? Need basis or merit-based? Is there any different process to apply for them?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:27
I responded to this in the previous question.

Thank you for your advice, Will.

Although I have already graduated from a U.S. university, I am currently doing an unofficial study abroad in China. It is simply a Chinese Language program offered by a university, but I have no real transcripts for this. Should I still include it on my application?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:28
Ryan, if you are potentially receiving credit for the courses you are taking you would need to include them.

10:13
Hi Will. I am a CS undergraduate student and I am interested in both CGGT MSE program and PhD in computer science and information technology. Should I apply to both?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:30
Fan, that's up to you. Although I'd take some time to figure out exactly why you want to do either program and what you would plan to do after you complete each program, because this should help you figure out which path is the right one. It may be to apply to both, but it also may not be. It's better for you to know that before you get in, then figure it out afterwards.
Ketan
10:14
Hello again Will! I am applying for the Robotics MSE program.
Are there any institute funding opportunities for the masters program?
AvatarWill Fenton, Asst Dir
10:30
Ketan, we don't offer any funding for master's students.
