Agree on the defense although the Giants had that 19-play drive that could have resulted in the go-ahead score in the third quarter. A Giants TD there completely changes the complexion of the game. And "the sky is the limit" for this offense might be a bit much. I kind of like the cautious approach with this defense. You know teams aren't going to score much so you adjust your offense accordingly. I think you might see similarly close games against teams like the Giants all season. The Steelers defense eventually will wear on these offenses and they'll be able to pull away like they did last night.

even if Conner can play how do you not start Snell?  he hit the holes faster and more yards after hit
Ray Fittipaldo
2:22
I'm with you. I think Snell earned more playing time no matter what. Not sure if they'd come out and start him over a healthy Conner, but the idea of Conner playing 75% of the snaps now seems outdated already. Snell looked like a starter and Tomlin said as much at his news conference today.

Hi Ray........who is next in line after Diontae Johnson to return punts.......I find myself holding my breath every time the opposition punts...........could Ray-Ray McCloud do both?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:23
Yes I believe McCloud has that skill set as well. Cam Sutton practices back there too.

was the first TD pass Minkahs fault or just bad coverage from Nelson?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:23
Nelson was expecting help. If you noticed Joe Haden was late rotating back so chalk that up to a bad series for Haden. He also had the pass interference on third down on the previous play.

Hey Ray! Did you get a chance to follow Dotson's limited play? Any noticeable strengths or flaws?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:25
I'm going to watch the game again. I did watch him on the TD pass. He was singled up on a defensive lineman and did a nice job on that play. Have to watch the six or seven other players too.

Heard a lot about the pre snap motion changes prior to the year, but wasnt that impressed with it on the offense.  Other than the close out play to Claypool seemed like it was more for show than anything..
Ray Fittipaldo
2:26
The Claypool end around is definitely out of the Canada playbook. He ran that a lot with Pitt. Some of the other misdirection stuff didn;t work as much, but it's early. I think they're setting some stuff up too.

Hi Ray.  How did Oly and 56 perform? (I am very bad with names).
Ray Fittipaldo
2:36
I thought Ola had good pressure but he failed to finish on a couple of occasions. Highsmith wasn't as noticeable, but they each played 10 or 11 snaps so the coaches had confidence in both.

Le'veon Bell hurt again.... I

Are you surprised?

Was Mike Tomlin the only NFL head coach to not know how many players he was allowed to dress?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:38
I was surprised he came out and admitted that today. These rules have been place for weeks. Someone in that building should have been able to answer any questions Tomlin had on the subject. That didn't exactly shed the Steelers operation in a positive light.

Hey Ray, after watching the Steelers and their Week 2 opponent last night, how do you feel we match up against the Broncos?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:39
Well, I was writing when the Broncos game kicked off and I only got to see a little of the second half. I wasn't all that impressed with Drew Locke. But then I heard he played much better in the first half. Listen, he's another second-year QB like Daniel Jones. They Steelers should be able to beat him.

Boswell MFG and Out of bounds Kickoff !!  He is better tahn that.  Did he say something about it?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:40
We had five or six player interviews after the game and Boswell was not among them. They gave us the players who made the biggest impact on the game. Ben, JuJu, Watt and Heyward did the zoom calls afterward.

I saw Jeff Reed at Sheetz this morning, should I tell him to give Tomlin a call?

Ray, do you think the Steelers have given any thought to reaching out to Ramon Foster given the big question marks around the OL after last night.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:41
No.

Ray - Looks like the Steelers don't need to worry about the Browns after all....
Ray Fittipaldo
2:42
They were playing the Ravens, but yeah they were a mess.

Can you really blame Conner for low stats when it took a while for the whole offense to get going?  He was out of the game when the offense started to click.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:43
I agree with you there. The early-game struggles had to do with much more than Conner. There was some conservative play-calling and Ben wasn't crisp. The Steelers also had a lead when Snell racked up some of his big yards late in the game.

I thought you couldn’t sign a guy from a team’s practice squad and pit him on your PS.  Wasn’t Hawkins signed off another team’s PS?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:45
You are correct yes. My mistake. Hawkins was signed off the Texans practice squad, which means he'll be added to the 53-man roster. I was trying to follow these developments on the car ride back from New Jersey.

Hi Ray - noticed Ulysses Gilbert was inactive. Surprised me. I thought he would be the main backup to Devin Bush and a special teams contributor. Has he regressed?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:46
Not sure, but they obviously felt like Marcus Allen could offer more. Allen played seven special teams snaps and none on defense.

2:46
Hi Ray - seemed like Daniel Jones was able to dissect the Steelers secondary in the first half. Issues to work on there or a result of selling out against the run to stop Barkley?
Ray Fittipaldo
2:47
Yes Tomlin alluded to that last night after the game. They stacked the box and sold out to stop Barkley, which left the secondary in some tough situations.

Looks like we should find the money somewhere for Bud. He had a stellar game.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:48
Where though? There simply isn't enough to go around for all the guys they want to sign. You can say the same thing about JuJu.

2:48
didn’t finish...if last nite is an example of Edmunds performance thru the rest of the season, what would you do if you were Colbert.
Ray Fittipaldo
2:49
I wouldn't give exercise his fifth-year option if that's what you mean. But there are still 15 games to go. Let's see if he makes some strides.

Were you surprised by the lack of TE involvement in the passing game?
