Ray Fittipaldo's Steelers chat: 10.10.23

Let's face it, holding could be called on almost every play. They need to get the blatant ones. And yes, they missed a few against the Ravens on Sunday. Not a lot of penalties on either team.

Hi Ray, Is it possible to get 3 miracle lucky wins while getting blown out in 2 games and still be good enough to make the playoffs and maybe even win a game?
Ray Fittipaldo
10:33
I suppose it is, but what they're doing now is not sustainable. They're 30th in the NFL in total offense and 30th in total defense. The reason they're 3-2 is they lead the league in sacks and are tied for second in takeaways. They've had some big plays on special teams and defense, and they've made some timely plays on offense. They could easily be 1-4 if the Browns and Ravens had competent coaching in those games.

It has been many games now with obvious deficiencies in the offense, and fans keep pounding the drum for coaching changes. At this point, isn’t it clear that Canada is here for at least the rest of the season, and we can forget all the talk about a replacement? There will be plenty of time after the season to discuss Canada (and Tomlin for that matter) but anymore chatter about it for the next couple months is a waste of time.

You're probably right, but never say never.

With playing at the Rams after the bye week is there any thought to going to the west coast a few days early to get acclimated? Or are the travel/lodging/practice logistics more trouble than they are worth?
Ray Fittipaldo
10:34
When they played in Las Vegas last month they flew out earlier on Saturday. They could do that again, but they won't go out days earlier to acclimate. No one really does that unless they have back-to-back west coast games. In that case, it makes perfect sense to stay out there for a week.

How would you rate Jones 1st start? Barring injury does Moore ever get the job back?
Ray Fittipaldo
10:36
I thought Jones played very well. Sure, he had a few mistakes, but for a first start, it was more than solid. And if that continues I don't see a reason to go back to Moore. Jones is the future.

Ray. Which team do you think has the best chance to get to seven Super Bowls? Dallas, San Francisco, New England, Pittsburgh.
Ray Fittipaldo
10:37
Gotta be New England and the Steelers because they have six and the Cowboys and 49ers have five. As good as the 49ers are right now winning two before the Steelers or Patriots win another isn't likely.

Has Danny Smith been redeemed?
Ray Fittipaldo
10:38
Huge momentum swing after the blocked punt. They worked on that play for three weeks in practice before calling it in a game. That's why head coaches allocate so much time to special teams in practice. It can help you win a game like it did for the Steelers on Sunday.

Hey Ray, I don't understand why they continue to give Harris the bulk of the carries.
Ray Fittipaldo
10:39
I don't necessarily have a problem with Harris getting more carries, but he'd be more effective later in games if the Steelers had leads. The Steelers need Warren's big plays earlier in games so they can get leads.
Tampa too
10:39
Ray. Do you think Warren should be starting over Harris at this point in the season? Warren appears to be playing harder.
Ray Fittipaldo
10:40
Starting doesn't matter, but Warren should be playing more snaps earlier in games for sure. It's so obvious that I'd be surprised if that doesn't happen after the off week. It's such a simple adjustment they can make.

Are Rooney/Tomlin really gonna let a 1 TD 2 FG performance from the offense save Canadas job going into the bye week? If the Ravens didn't have the dropsies we lose that game by at least 2 TD's
Ray Fittipaldo
10:43
You're probably right about the Ravens if they make even one of those catches. And I just don't think they'll make a change after a win.

I was expecting the blocked punt / safety would give the Ravens back the ball on the 20 yd line.  It seemed like the Steeler possessed the ball and went out of bounds without getting feet or elbow in the end zone.  Was there any discussion regarding safety or Raven's ball back?
Ray Fittipaldo
10:44
If the ball went out of the end zone without Rodney Williams touching it, it still would have been a safety. There was no harm in trying to get his elbow in for a touchdown. If he had an extra split second he might have thought to bat it backward to one of his teammates.

Watt beat Faalele every time he wasn’t doubled. If he’s the Raven’s RT of the future, are they in trouble?
Ray Fittipaldo
10:46
Yes, but I don't think they're counting on him being a starter. He was a mid-round project.

Josh Allen took off when they got Diggs. Fields took off when they got Brown. Tua took off when they got Hill. Do the Steelers need to make a move like that?

Isn't that what Pickens is for?

will Diontae Johnson return after the bye week?
Ray Fittipaldo

I think there is a good chance of that happening.

Ray, thank you for your chats.  Love reading them and I also love the segments you do on 93.7 The Fan.  Even us Steeler Fans down here tune in to listen.  I think the Steelers biggest problem on offense (after Matt Canada of course) is still the offensive line.  If they can gel to the point they can run block and give Kenny time in the passing game the season can be salvaged.  Kenny is criticized for bailing too early when he has clean pockets.  I believe that is a result of him having no faith in his protection.  Starting Broderick Jones should help!  Do you agree and is this something they can work on over the bye?
Ray Fittipaldo
10:48
Honestly, they need to work on Pickett trusting his protection more. There are times when he feels pressure when it isn't there.

Why was Gunner even on the field Sunday??  Did he give one of Tomlin's sons a scholarship too?
Ray Fittipaldo
10:48
Calvin Austin was dinged up early and they didn't want him back there.

Should the Steelers use Watt on offense? He would look great running a jet sweep.
Ray Fittipaldo
10:49
JJ Watt had a few touchdown catches in his career.

Ray - Thanks for the chats! How does the schedule during the bye week at the facility differ from a normal week? Biggest current mystery that will never be solved is whether or not KP changed the call or just the protection.

Under the NFL/NFLPA collective bargaining agreement players have to get four consecutive days off during their off week. So the Steelers are scheduled off Thursday through Sunday. They are practicing later this morning and are scheduled to practice again tomorrow. But honestly, the practices are more for the younger players and guys on the practice squad. The veterans won't do much. This is the best time for the coaches to self-scout. They'll look at their tendencies and make adjustments for the second half of the season.

The OLB Herbic looked good in the preseason games but haven't seen much of him in the regular season. What is your take, is he hurt, still not ready for the big league?
Ray Fittipaldo
10:52
I just think they've been in so many close games that it's been hard to get rest for Watt and Highsmith. And Golden is a veteran and has played well.

If you’re Omar…does Najee Harris get offered his 5th year option?

Right now? I'd say no.

Ben’s comments about Kenny’s need to work on pocket presence and not running into danger…. Do you think it’s something that can be improved over the bye???
