I'm not in the business of reassuring, but the red zone turnovers are too frequent of late. This team has to get on their details and tighten up. They're just too sloppy. And you can't win consistently when you're sloppy.

If the tight end doesn't fumble in the end zone, I believe the Steelers would have won that game.  What say you?  Everything would had went their way.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:22
I tend to agree, but there were so many other mistakes that happened after that. You have to be able to overcome mistakes if you want to be a good football team. Pretty sad if you ask me that you can't overcome a mistake in the first quarter and beat a below .500 team.

Ray...why not more Jaylen Samuels?

I wanted to see Ridley on the final series. Conner did not look confident to me. I'd have liked to have seen Ridley and Nix in there and pound it in. Or even Conner and Nix.

Hi Ray. Such a frustrating loss being we gave game away. That Grimble play just set the tone for game. Do you agree turning point was mid 3rd qtr, up 17-10, with ball near midfield, Romo even saying how we are most complete team, crowd was silent, then Ben takes inexplicable timeout, then throws a very weak pick.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:24
Yes. Just protect the ball, punt, pin them deep and make them go 80 or 90 yards to tie the score. Instead, the Broncos get the ball at midfield, throw deep on the first pay and then boom it's tied. This is the situational type of football that I referenced earlier. The Steelers are not good at situational football. In fact, they've been pretty bad the past two weeks.

The game plan seemed to be to pass pass pass right from the very beginning. Is this a lack of faith in Conner for some reason all the sudden? Something to do with a third-stringer on the O-line? I don't get it
Ray Fittipaldo
12:26
They probably thought they had favorable matchups in the Broncos secondary. That's fine, but it doesn't mean you totally ignore the run either.  The running game is about developing rhythm and confidence. When you run as infrequently as the Steelers it's hard to develop a rhythm in the run game.

Seeing as how the Steelers tend to play well in primetime games, do you anticipate them getting the win against the chargers next week? Will be a tough one.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:26
They better. With New England and New Orleans on the horizon wins are going to be tough to come by down the stretch.

Ray, Is it me or do the majority of Ben's turnovers seem to be when he is targeting AB?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:27
Brown has been the target on the past two in the red zone. I'd have to go back and look at some of the others.

Ray...why the fade pass again 1st and goal against a veteran CB? I hate that play
Ray Fittipaldo
12:28
I was not a fan either.

Do you think if it comes to it the Steelers can go on the road in the playoffs and beat teams like the Patriots and Chiefs?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:28
I'm not confident in either scenario, but I'd be more confident in Kansas City than New England.

How does the Martavis Bryant trade look now?  He hasn't been lighting it up in Oakland, but he didn't get suspended.  Washington is a total bust.  His drop was huge.  Will they go with Hunter?  DHB?  Just get Switzer more time?  These top offenses are much deeper at WR than we are.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:29
I wouldn't be surprised if they looked at someone other than Washington this week. I'm not going to say he's a bust just yet, but he hasn't done anything to be deserving of a weekly roster spot.

Is this team missing a deep threat like Martavis and is Ju Ju becoming a #1 wr and AB a posession guy a la Hines?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:30
Yes they are missing a true deep threat. Not sure one will magically appear by season's end either.

Lots of strange things in the game yesterday, but Grimbles fumble was near the top of the list, especially in light of his post game explanation.  Just hit the brakes, let him fly by and cut inside!  A TD there changes the tone of game and may have been the difference in win/loss
Ray Fittipaldo
12:31
Yes, I've already pointed out the multiple physical mistakes. But for him to admit what he did after the game is shocking. Many teams would cut him today. The Steelers don't usually operate that way, but they have been working out tight ends the past couple of weeks.

It seems to me that the Steelers almost Never get beat, but rather lose games. By this I mean their mistakes and miscues have more to do with a loss than actually being outplayed, like fumbling away 14 points and STILL almost winning. Is it more frustrating watching them beat themselves than actually losing due to a team winning outright?

Just not buttoned up enough.

Hi Ray and thanks. It seems like this becoming a common occurrence for Ben, last year against NE, last week against Jax and this week, Int in the end zone within 5 to 10 yards throwing in the middle. Isnt it time for a different play call down there? Thanks
Ray Fittipaldo
12:32
You're onto something there.
cj
12:32
can we finally stop blaming the coaching staff?  We have "stars" who continue to choke in big spots...Ben throwing the INT in the end zone last year against NE and again yesterday, Connor big fumble against cleveland and again yesterday, Cam and Watt getting destroyed all day with the run game.  It's not the coaching or the gameplan, it's that the players are good..not great like we all think.  Agree?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:33
That's fair. But if Ben is calling too many plays on his own that aren't working or are careless then the coaches have to be able to rein him in.
JJ
12:33
Why is this such a Jeckyll & Hyde team? They keep this up, Baltimore will creep up on them.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:33
I agree. And I warned people two weeks ago not to sleep on the Ravens.

We've seen coordinators fired already (Jacksonville, Cincinatti) and a head coach let go (Cleveland).  Do you think Keith Butler is going to be fired at the end of the season?  The same errors continue to plague this defense (wide open receivers, tight ends), porous run defense, lack  of a pass rush.  How many more excuses do we have to hear?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:35
I'm more concerned about the inability for the defense to create turnovers. But honestly, I'd have a hard time firing someone whose defense has given up 24 or less in seven straight games. The offense lost that game with the four turnovers and poor execution with the goal line offense.

Any details on TJ Watt injury?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:35
He came back into the game so it doesn't appear to be anything that will threaten to keep him out.

Seems like Terrell Edmunds is always running after someone and never making a play on the ball. Do you think this is something he can develop into or just who he is?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:37
He's a rookie. Plenty of room for him to develop. But we heard weeks ago that Morgan Burnett might slip back into the starting job. Maybe that happens this week now that the winning streak is over.

Ben is a Hall-of Fame quarterback, no doubt. But can we win a super bowl again with him throwing 56 times a game? I know he has won in the past but those were teams with different strengths than this one. When you pass that much, it seems almost inevitable that Ben will make an inexcusable decision. Compare this team to New England, which has gone 4 straight without a turnover.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:38
Ding, ding, ding. I agree!

Ray, thanks for giving us the time. We needed this win with our upcoming schedule. I feel like we gave this one away too. How do you think it will play out with this loss and the remaining games? Thanks
