That's why they signed him to a two-year, $6 million deal. They wanted to upgrade their quality depth. Now it's his chance to prove he was worth the money.

12:21
why can't tv announcers, Craig Wolfley or even coach Tomlin pronounce Tyler Matakevich's name correctly?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:22
Better question: why can't anyone pronounce Mar-tavis. It's not Martavious. I even heard Ross Cockrell refer to him as Matavious this summer, and he graduated from Duke.

100 people will ask this question today: Any NEWS on Tuitt's Biceps injury?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:22
Not unless there has been news in the past half hour since I've been taking your questions. Maybe this afternoon.
12:23
Not a good debut for JuJu. No catches and two holding calls. I'm sure he'll improve.
Dude_From_Cali
12:23
Is JuJu trying WAY TOO HARD to be the sparkle on coaches eye by committing repeated holding calls which hurt the team instead of help?

Question to previous answer...

The Browns were playing their DBs off the line of scrimmage to prevent deep passes most of the game, right? So shouldn't that kind of defense lead to more success running the football?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:24
Yes. I mentioned that earlier in the chat.
Dude_From_Cali
12:24
If TE Vance's stats don't improve soon, he's a busted trade. Thoughts?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:25
You do know they got him for next to nothing, right? They gave up their fourth-round pick for the 49ers' fifth-round pick. If the Steelers win the Super Bowl and the 49ers finish last we are taking a few supplemental picks separating the pick the Steelers gave up for McDonald.

Hi Ray - I know Mike Tomlin won't admit and made excuses bc of being behind the chains, but Leveon Bell looked very out of sync and rusty from his long stay away. Do you agree?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:26
Yes, but I think pat of it was the decision not to establish the run early. Ask any offensive lineman. It has to be a mentality. You can't just decide you want to try to run the ball in the third quarter. It doesn't work that way.

Any update on Tuitt's injury? Didn't Mitchell and Wilcox leave the game with injuries as well? Tomlin didn't mention either of them during post game...
Ray Fittipaldo
12:27
Apparently their injuries were not serious enough for Tomlin to mention. I actually think Mitchell was subbed out because he missed so much time in camp. They wanted to protect him.

Defense looked better with pressure and the offense looked like it is behind, Do you think it was lack of play in the preseason?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:27
Antonio Brown barely played in the preseason, and he looked pretty good to me.
Young bull
12:27
Is 2,000 yards a possibility for Antonio brown this year
Ray Fittipaldo
12:28
Of course. He had more than 1,800 a few years ago. If he stays healthy he can do it.

I would be saddened to hear Tuitt is out for the year, he is my fav player on D.  That said, if there was a position the steelers could probably afford to lose someone, the DL would be it(as shown last year).  How much will the coaches preach about penalties this week?  That was awful.  I think overall, the NFL week 1 is weak due to the caution taken in camps.  Yesterday was ugly football across the league, agree?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:29
I heard that. A bunch of bad games all day. The Steelers didn't play well, but at least they won and can try to correct their mistakes.

Hi Ray: As they say a win is a win is a win. The only thing that worries me is Tuitt´s injury. Hopefully it is not season ending. Do you think we get Dupree back for next week? Thanks for the chat´s. Go steelers¡¡¡
Ray Fittipaldo
12:30
We'll see what he does in practice. He'll have to get out there by Friday this week if he wants to play vs. the Vikings. Anthony Chickillo played really well in his place. Dupree better be careful he doesn't get Wally Pipped.

Happy Monday Ray, I understand the risk to playing stars in preseason. However, after watching the Steelers (and some other NFL games), do you feel coaches may reconsider preseason and actually require their starters to participate and establish fluency.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:31
What if Antonio Brown suffers a knee injury like Julian Edelman did? Then we'e all criticizing the Steelers.

12:32
In your opinion (as I had to watch the Bills in Upstate NY) how did Bell look running..despite the few carries and yards did he look slower/any different than last yr?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:32
Just didn't look in sync.

Hi, Ray...I noticed that Jordan Dangerfeld received an injury settlement, leading me to believe that his ankle injury was more serious than reported. I thought he would at the very least make the practice squad since his arrow always seemed to be pointing up. Do you have any further info on what happened with him?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:32
I would imagine once his injury completely heals he is a candidate to be added to the practice squad.

The Browns prevent defense pretty much neutralized Martavis Bryant....aren't there other ways to get him involved (besides screens)? We can't have another season where AB is the only legit receiver!
Ray Fittipaldo
12:33
Todd Haley is a smart guy. He'll figure it out. How about running three verticals? Make the safeties choose and throw it to the guy with single coverage? The Steelers never even attempted a pass down the field.
Ken
12:34
T.J. had a great interception in which he had to leap high and pull it in.  Nice to see finally a defender with hands to catch the ball.
Ray Fittipaldo
12:34
Yes that was quite the athletic play.
Dude_From_Cali
12:34
Hi, Ray: Jarvis Jones reached injury settlement with AZ and off the roster. Does Jarvis keep his $1M signing bonus or partially, fully refunded back to AZ?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:35
Not sure how that works and was unaware he had a $1 million signing bonus. Why in the world would the Cardinals give him a signing bonus of any kind?
Joe
12:35
Your take on the Steelers offense during the game? Rusty execution? Poor play calling? Very good Browns defense? I really didn't like the play calling, and I've had this beef with Haley before. It's like he gets it into his head what he wants to do and he's slow to change when it's clearly not working. I mean, why were they running so many bubble screens when the Browns had 10 guys up near the line if scrimmage? They needed to take advantage of the middle of the field and they weren't doing that enough
Ray Fittipaldo
12:36
Not Todd Haley's best performance. Let's just leave it at that. He's had more good moments than bad since arriving in 2012. We should be reminded of that.

We constantly have these dreams about the Steeler's offense based on personnel but the reality shows a far worse scoring offense than they should have on paper. What or who is the main culprit? I think the 14 points the offense scored yesterday was indicative of how they played, especially on the road, last year. Obviously something or someone is preventing them from improving. What do you see as the problem?
Ray Fittipaldo
12:36
Let's give it some time. It was Week 1. I wold expect a big improvement in Week 2 against the Vikings.
