Trading Verdugo isn't out of the question if the Sox wanted to add some more pop in the outfield, but I'd bump the brakes on a Duran/Refsnyder platoon.  Duran is still unproven at the MLB level and Refsnyder is a journeyman, his good numbers with Boston notwithstanding.

Could you see the Red Sox trading for a lead off hitter such as Kwan or Bryan Reynolds?
Mark P
5:56
Zero chance the Guardians trade Kwan.  Reynolds is available if the price is right, but the Pirates' price is very high, and that would be another type of deal that would very quickly reduce the farm depth that Bloom has tried to build up

Do Boston bring in a full time DH,or rotate?
Mark P
5:57
Likely a rotation

Where does Bobby Dalbec stand going into the 2023 season? His trade value is at the lowest. Does he platoon with Casas / Hosmer? Does Hosmer get traded with the Padres picking upmost of the tab?
Mark P
5:58
With the DH spot likely being open, Hosmer or Dalbec might get some extra at-bats that way, but it does seem like there's a bit of a logjam.  Hosmer would have to approve any trade, which is a complication but not an insurmountable one if the Sox can find a trade partner willing to give Hosmer more regular at-bats.

Should the Red Sox eat some crow and try and get Renfroe back from the Brew Crew if they make him available or should they try and upgrade right field with another player?
Mark P
6:01
Renfroe's is projected to earn $11.2MM in arbitration next year, which the Brewers might find steep enough to consider trade offers.  That said, however, Milwaukee still needs hitting, and those needs would only deepen if Renfroe was moved
Rafaella
6:01
Does Cedanne Rafaella become a mainstay in boston next year and solve part of the outfield problem allowing them to spend elsewhere ie pitching, devers. Bogaerts?
Mark P
6:02
Rafaela somewhat came out of nowhere to post a huge season in the minors, and put himself on the radar as a true prospect.  However, since he has yet to play any Triple-A ball, I'd be hesitant about calling him a building block as early as 2023
Jake
6:03
If the Red Sox do indeed re-sign Bogaerts to a long term deal, where does that leave Mayer and would they look to trade him for an elite pitcher?
Mark P
6:04
Bogaerts or Mayer could switch positions down the road.  Retaining Bogaerts shouldn't have any bearing on Mayer's future in Boston.
Story
6:06
Did I sign with the red Sox with the understanding I'll be playing shortstop next season?
Ebenezer_Batflip
6:06
Do you think Story can/will ever play SS again? There are questions about his arm strength and it seems like even if Xander leaves, Story might be a 2B for the rest of his career. Should Sox fans be happy with having Story as a 2B if so?
Mark P
6:08
Story is on record as saying that he's perfectly happy staying at 2B if Bogaerts remains, since it would make the team better.  Likewise, if the Sox were to pick up one of the big name shortstops as a replacement, you'd think Story would be happy at second base.
If Bogaerts did leave, I can foresee a scenario where Story maybe floats back and forth between both 2B and SS, depending on who else the Sox have on the roster

Are you guys going to re-sign Rich Hill and James Paxton?
Mark P
6:09
Seems like there's a decent chance Hill re-signs.

Paxton's club options will definitely not be picked up, but it seems like that he'll exercise his own $4MM player option to stay on the team in 2023.

Keep hearing how Bogaerts is not a good defensive ss. IMO at 6'2" 220 lbs, it's not like he physically can't defend the spot? Can you handle this Q for all of us who are ss needy squads? Should he be viewed as a ss...and for how long....?
Mark P
6:11
The irony is that 2022 was far and away Bogaerts' best defensive season, as per the public metrics.  After years of subpar play, he had positive OAA, DRS, and UZR/150 totals, and even got nominated for a Gold Glove.
6:12
So it's not like he's necessarily a liability in the field, especially if he can keep this defensive form going into 2023 and beyond.  Of course, teams also have to factor in how the changing defensive shift rules might impact Bogaerts (or any infielder) going forward.

Should Pedroia's number be retired? I know he's not likely to be a HOF, but he was a fan fav and a big part of our recent history
Mark P
6:14
I suspect Pedroia's number will be retired eventually.  The Sox already relaxed their "HOF only" policy for Johnny Pesky's number retirement, so Pedroia not being in Cooperstown probably won't be a roadblock

Where is your favorite place to sit at Fenway Park?
Mark P
6:14
I've only been to a couple of games at Fenway, so I'm not the authority on the subject.  But, one of the two games was first-base side under the overhang, with a direct view of the Green Monster....great spot to watch a game

It's a reference to an old Arrested Development joke, and it has somehow become a running joke in my chats

What prospects/players will it take to land Sean Murphy?
Mark P
6:19
As others have noted, the A's generally pursue a pattern of "one MLB-ready player, one good prospect, one decent prospect" for trades of notable players.  In Murphy's case, that asking price will be larger due to his extra years of control.

Wouldn't be a surprise if the A's wanted a package that included Casas/Rafaela, or perhaps Mayer involved
6:20
Not that the Sox wouldn't balk at such an ask, but that's what Oakland might shoot for, given the wide amount of interest in Murphy's services

I think signing Mancini or Abreu to play 1B/DH in a platoon scenario makes a lot of sense. They both have great lifetime offensive stats at Fenway park. I also think either can be had for a short term deal and they wouldn’t blow up the bank. What say you?
Mark P
6:22
It indeed makes sense.  It would tie up the 1B/DH spots between the new signing and Casas, plus maybe Hosmer if he's retained and then Dalbec.  But, the Sox might not mind for the sake of a consistent bat.

However, perhaps a likelier scenario is for the Sox to go after a player who can play more positions than just first base.  That way, the new signing isn't just locked into either 1B or DH in the lineup.

Do the Sox need stars or better complementary players? 30% of their PAs went to players with <=0 fWAR, while X led the team with 6.1, and will probably leave.
Mark P
6:24
I am a big believer in the idea of raising the talent floor.  The Sox used this concept to win the 2013 World Series, and the same idea led to a big improvement for the 2021 team.  As much criticism as Bloom takes for not making the splashy moves, under-the-radar additions can help a team just as much.

Ian Happ a realistic target for the Red Sox?  What would it take to get him?
Mark P
6:25
Depends on the Cubs' plans, since if they have an eye towards contending in 2023, they might not want to deal Happ (or, they feel they can extend him).

Does Cora join Bloom on the hot seat if the team struggles out of the gate next season?
