Doesn't look amazing so far. Terrible defense and okay offense.
0.6 fWAR in 2023. 1.4 from bWAR. You would want more out of a guy you plunked down about 100 million to get.

But he hit 15 home runs!
Darragh McDonald
12:19
Is that good?
Osvaldo
12:19
Duvall or Ozuna for DH?
Darragh McDonald
12:19
Personally, I would keep the DH spot open for Devers/Casas/Yoshida.

How about two of three to fill desperate need for SP's. Yamamoto, Montgomery, Nola? Do you think Nola goes back to Philly?
Darragh McDonald

I don't think it's crazy for the Sox to get one premier pitcher. I wouldn't be on it because, as I mentioned, I think the GM will slow play things initially. But they do need pitching, both now and long-term.
So, if they do make a big splash, the rotation is the most logical spot, in my view.

duvall had 21 home runs. is that good?
Darragh McDonald
12:22
For a guy on a one-year deal worth 7 million bucks who was injured almost half the year, sure.
But when you give a guy 100 million, you usually want a star.
He got more than Schwarber and Castellanos, for instance.

is there anything to having an international player of the same nationality in recruiting a guy like Yamamoto?
Darragh McDonald
12:23
Ken Rosenthal had a piece in The Athletic back in April which suggested Japanese players don't like joining teams that already have a Japanese guy. This came up again this week because the Mets already have Senga and also want Yamamoto.
12:24
Personally, I don't see how that can be true. Teams in Japan are mostly Japanese guys. And Japan just won the WBC. I don't see how they would have a weird taboo around having two Japanese guys on one MLB team.

Why would the new GM slow play things when the prior POBO just got fired for not putting a competitive team on the field? Do you think the fans will tolerate another season in last place in the AL East?
Darragh McDonald
12:26
A GM usually gets three or fours years to show progress. They don't have to do everything in year one. For a team like the Sox with a bunch of notable prospects in Double-A, I think it makes sense to take a look at them before deciding what to spend your money on.

You are now GM for a day. Do you resign Turner? He will surely opt out.
and thanks to all of you for these chats. They are fun.
Darragh McDonald
12:27
Turner is still good and seems beloved, but I think they should lean away from guys that are primarily DHs.
12:28
Turner can still play the field but you'd be committing to having three of Devers, Casas, Yoshida and Turner out there every day.
Casas

7/135 get an extension done?
Darragh McDonald
12:28
That's way too high.
12:29
Apart from Tatis, the record for a guy between one and two years of service time is Ke'Bryan Hayes at 8/70.
Olson got 8/168 but he was already into his arb years and had a longer track record than Casas.

Realistically, what percentage would you put my chances of reaching Boston in 2024 at?
Darragh McDonald
12:30
I'd say decent. It seems the new CBA is encouraging teams to promote their prospects at the end of the year. Late enough that they get a cup of coffee but hold onto their prospect status into the following season.
12:31
There used to be a big wave of prospect promotions in late April/early May but it seems that's now happening in September.

Midnight post on a Sunday night? You guys really know your Sox fans! I've seen the same answer for almost every team you guys have done a chat for, but multiple starting pitchers this offseason makes sense. Outside of fans, does the Yamamoto/Yoshida friendship mean anything besides a storyline? Because Boston certainly has the need and the money for a young "ace".

Ha, well, yesterday was Monday.
12:33
And it was published around 7:30 Eastern, I believe. But we often change the time on posts before logging off for the night, just so the most interesting stuff is at the top of the site.

Will either Houck or Whitlock pan out as starters?  The information so far says they are both more effective as relievers - I see written constantly on these pages that are starter is worth far more than a reliever, but is not a GOOD reliever more valuable to have that a BAD or ineffective starter?
Darragh McDonald
12:34
I think health is the big thing. They could still be decent starters but neither has shown the ability to hold up for a full year's workload.
Joshua
12:34
Who would be a solid right-handed bat they could acquire to help balance the lineup?
Darragh McDonald
12:35
Teoscar would be a big splash. Could bring back Duvall.
12:36
Randy Arozarena and Austin Hays are theoretical trade candidates, but their clubs might not want to trade within the division.
Reds have a million position players, but they won't come cheap.
Tyler O'Neill?

As an outsider, assuming that with your Irish name that you are not from Boston and most likely root for a team like Toronto, how do you see the Red Sox ownership? The first decade they seemed involved and willing to spend, and afterwards seemingly reactionary and possibly forcing the GM to make moves they wouldn't have. I doubt Cherington wanted to sign Ramirez and Sandoval to big deals, I doubt Bloom wanted to trade Betts. Henry/Warner are the reason that this team is being declined interviews, correct?
Darragh McDonald
12:38
Yeah, as an outsider, it seems like the won a few titles but then wanted to coast on those for a while. They probably figured they could lower payroll but attendance would stay high even if the results faltered a bit.
