It seems like Dombrowski was ousted because he didn't want to play it that way.
Since Bloom came from the Rays, they probably thought he could put a decent team together with less money. That may have been true in a few more years. The farm seems to be in decent shape.
12:40
That's mostly speculative on my part, but they had a top 5 payroll for most of the century. It has dropped over the past few years and they were 12th in 2023.
Craig Breslow
12:41
Why is everyone declining to interview for the Boston GM opening?
Darragh McDonald
12:41
Good time for you to ask that question, Craig.
Second tier pitching
12:42
All those pitchers you mentioned before I would take a flier on. It could move whitlock and Crawford and tanner H back to the bullpen while getting maybe two of them would make your rotion so much better. How much for think it would take to get a gioloto type?
Darragh McDonald
12:43
We haven't settled on a final prediction for Giolito yet but we're leaning towards something like the Rodon/Giants deal. Two years with an opt-out so he can return to free agency if he has a bounceback season.

Thoughts on sale possibly getting trading? Even though they need pitching
Darragh McDonald
12:44
I wouldn't be shocked if they traded Sale and signed someone else to eat his innings. Despite his 4.30 ERA this year, his strikeout and walk numbers looked pretty good.
John Henry
12:44
Was too much blame put on Chaim? He was brought here to clean house and he did so, just like I asked him to
Darragh McDonald
12:44
Yeah, a lot of people pointed this out when he was canned. They hired him to build the farm system and spend less money, then fired him when the team was kind of in a transition phase.
12:45
At the same time, like I mentioned, there were some mistakes during his time. But on the whole, the timing is a bit strange.

As an insider, fans see the payroll dropping, see the team trade away a generational talent like Betts, and see ownership buying Liverpool and the Penguins etc, and there's genuine dislike for the owners
Darragh McDonald
12:46
Seems fair enough to me.
12:47
There are probably a couple of exceptions, but most people rich enough to own a sports franchise are going to be loathsome.
reggie
12:47
why do you see them taking another year to assess their situation and see what they got? My POV suggests ownership is influenced a lot by the casual fans and will likely make a huge splash or two to generate buzz. Whether those moves are the right one or not is another question. Also - I feel you’re closing the book on Masa as a disappointing signing. First year in the league, plus WBC lead to him gassing out by the end of the summer. Suzuki & Kim made meaningful improvements after their rookie seasons. Why not with Masa?
Darragh McDonald
12:48
It depends how much payroll space there is going forward. With Devers, Story, Yoshida and Whitlock, they already have about 80 million on the books in each year going forward through 2026.
12:50
Let's say you sign Yamamoto or someone like that. Now you've got over 100 million tied up in five players for years to come.
Is there room to do that and make another big move a year from now? Or is that your big move done?
12:51
As for Masa, he could certainly improve. But for right now, he looks like a defensively-limited version of Andrew Benintendi.

Might be jinxing it but if the rangers win the World Series which of the following teams to never win would you want to win next? Tampa Bay, Seattle, San Diego, Milwaukee, or Colorado?
Darragh McDonald
12:51
Hmm, good question.
12:52
Who do you want to win the WS for the first time ever in life?

Rays (12.8% | 10 votes)

Mariners (30.8% | 24 votes)

Padres (16.7% | 13 votes)

Brewers (35.9% | 28 votes)

Rockies (3.8% | 3 votes)

I would lean Mariners. I was a Griffey fan as a kid and they have that lovable loser thing going on.

It's funny reading this chat after spending some time in other message boards/sports spaces (both Red Sox specific and not); you seem to have a much more pessimistic view of the Sox current position going forward.  Plenty of payroll clearing up, rookies playing well especially as the year went on, talent in the pipeline both immediate and future.
Darragh McDonald
12:53
I don't think I'm that pessimistic, so I guess I should apologize for coming off that way.
I'm more just unsure of what the future plan is.
12:54
I do like the farm system, which is why I concluded the Offseason Outlook by talking about that.
But that's also why I think they will probably slow-play things a bit for now, as opposed to running out and splashing money right away.

You seem to be assuming that this year's payroll is indicative of the future plans. Boston had been over the luxury tax the previous two years and needed to reset their penalty level.
Darragh McDonald
12:56
This is true. I mentioned that in the outlook. With the tax status reset, they certainly could go wild this winter if they want to. But since the FA class is weak and they have a few notable prospects sort of near the majors, I figure they will wait. But I could certainly be wrong! Wouldn't be the first time.

San Diego is a beautiful city and has lost all their other professional sports teams. The Clippers and Chargers are gone. Give the Padres a little love people.

Was Kelley Jansen overrated in your opinion? 3.63 era. Highest WHIP of his career.
Darragh McDonald
12:57
I guess it depends what you mean by overrated.
You're right that his stats are trending in the wrong direction. But that's not entirely unexpected. He's 36 now.

12:58
I don't think you're being pessimistic fwiw. When you're a fan of a team it's hard not to be biased.
Darragh McDonald
12:58
Hey, thanks, Steve. I try to be objective.
12:59
The youth is good. I'm just skeptical that they'll come out and blow away everyone with a huge signing. But we'll see.
